Hi! Thank you for this guide, super helpful! I recently had my console and I managed to update it to Android 8.1 thanks for your guide. As a side note, your video refers to the Android 8.1 "v2" firmware while now the version "v4" is out there and this guide still applies to perform the update. The only difference I found is when the operating system was flashed and I booted up the console, all the stock apps were automatically installed too. I think that this happened because my SD card already had the "preinstall" folder in it. Thank you!

I had the same situation as you, but in my case I lost the second boot option which was the retroid game plataform for it self, it's not a problem for me though, cause I've installed the Pegasus UI on my RP2, and I'm pretty sure it's better than the oher one. To anyone wondering where the find the files needed, they changed the way the folder is organized. You can still find the files you need by going into the "Old Firmware Versions" folder and download "RP2_8.1v2_Upgrade_with_guide.zip" It's a different name I know, but it still has the same files you need.

I realize this is over 2 years old but im trying to update the device for a friend. your link is broken so im using the V4 version through the link provided and the flash tool will not start the process for me. Why does your link provide the version of 8.1 without RetroidOS? It's literally called "8.1v4 Single Boot - No RetroidOS" which erases RetroidOS!! I'm kinda glad the flash failed because I would have been bummed out.

Thank you for making this video. I ordered a RP2, and planned on upgrading it, and some of the higher-end emulators to play some of the PSX1, and N64 games I want to play again. I’m HOPING the RP3 is powerful enough to run Dreamcast or maybe even PS2 games smoothly, and comes with L3, R3 buttons, and other features like a larger screen with higher screen resolution.

Just a heads up to anyone who gets stuck at the flashing part (nothing happens when you plug your RP2 in). Download the drivers - extract the drivers - right click and install the drivers - reboot your PC. Then try again.

hey man, id like to consider myself well versed in computer things, but i feel completely lost! First of all the scatter file is not in the folder you say it is, i found it in the RP2-8.1v4_Single_Boot folder and to top it off the files that show up when loading that android scatter file are less than what appear to you. Im just completely lost, i feel like i threw money away trying to follow your guide. Not blaming you just annoyed that after a certain point in your video nothing makes sense, and even following retroids own guide, i still dont know what im doing wrong because, when i try to run the flashing app nothing happens when i connect the RP2 to the usb cable. any help is greatly appreciated, might just sell this piece of crap, way too complex to just update, when i just wanted something simple to game on.

After I power off the retroid 2 and plug back in the USB, the Smart Phone Flash tool doesn't detect it. My computer identifies that it's plugged in properly. I tried this several times, and verified the device is powered off.

For what it's worth - tried two different PCs, updated ADB drivers, tried two different cables and still nothing. Checked to see if the device is recognized at all using 'adb devices' command and it does show up, but I can't manage to get 'internal storage' to show up so that I can do this update. A good thing to remember is to use the right kind of USB cable. Some do not transfer data and will cause one grief.

Also your part of the guide on how to get the stock apps back onto the device is a little different on how the 'official' documentation suggests you do it, which is confusing but I think I am now clear on the process. And it's bricked. Got to the flash tool part, seemed to be going fine, but before I got to the green check, my computer blue screened. Now, when I try to run it again, it times out. RP2 doesn't respond when I press power. Any help?

@T Benjamin Very frustrating, but it can be saved. If you want to see the help I got on discord, you can probably still see it. I think my name there is "no_donatello". The first thing I was told to do was remove the battery. It's a pain but fairly easy to access. However, that didn't fix it for me. I then reinstalled the drivers, which didn't work. The final thing I did was go into settings on the flash tool program, and there was an option that was by default set to "high speed" and I switched it to "full speed." After that, it started flashing again.

​@T Benjamin You should definitely try asking the Discord. My RP2 was "dead." Nothing would happen when I pressed the power button, but the flash tool software *was* still recognizing it when I plugged in. However, it was giving me a timeout error every time.

I haven't experienced any negative aspects myself -- no bugs or crashing. But maybe you can ask in the Retroid Handhelds discord server to see if anyone else had issues. One disadvantage is that the ClassicBoy app will no longer work, so if you use that app this might be an issue.

@1:56 is where I had to get back to in order to go to my SAVE files of games I went through already. Just listen in from there for either 8.1 operating system, or in my case the Lineage 0S install from another video (going back and forth to configure here and there.

dont know if you found the fix but I had the same issue and the preinstall script wouldnt work at all. the fix for me was going into the file manager and manually clicking on all of the APK files to install them individually.

Mixed feelings for this one. Retroid underdelivered again with 8.1 being non-OTA (nvm that it's 2 months late). Was a headache to re-configure everything even with the configs backed-up. The launcher and app drawer still have minor bugs in gamepad mode which is worrisome in case they revise this update and we need to re-flash again. My biggest concern for 8.1 though is that the free ram is consistently 80-120mb lower than it was in Android 6. I don't have a 2nd device to compare side-by-side, but I do wonder how this affects the heavier emulators (PSP, DC and maybe N64).

Free ram is not directly linked to performance, at least it's not a good indicator. RAM is made to be used. Limiting the number of background processes, just like on 6, will have way more impact IMHO

Dude this guide is so confusing, you're missing steps and folders and files all over the place. You say at one point to download the preinstall file (I had to manually type in the google drive address for that since I can't find this in the written guide and you didn't place a link to it in the description of this video) and drag it to your SD card. Then you say replace that file with an updated preinstall file from another directory that you don't explain AT ALL. Whaaaaaaaaat are you talking about

The late Oct RP2 releases were supposed to ship with Android 8.1. If this is as stable as they can get Android 8.1 on RP2, I can see them updating newer shipments with 8.1. We just got to be their guinea pigs first 😅

Has Gameboy Advance been tested with Android 8.1? I have tried with the 1.5.0 version of RetroArch and it immediately crashes/exits when trying to launch a game. Additionally, I am unable to download and install any cores with either version of RetroArch. Are there different version of RetroArch that should be used?

Hi, followed your guide but my PC (which is really old and runs on Vista) wouldn't allow for the key backup tool to work at all. I still updated the firmware from 6.0 to 8.1 sucessfully, however my volume buttons now only switch off the screen and do not adjust the volume control, is this due to the key backup tool issue, or something else? After completing the install my retroid pocket was booting then powering off. At first I thought maybe I made a mistake and then I realized I was a dummy and the battery was drained. Just a heads up for anybody doing it when the battery is low. Do a full charge beforehand.

Really struggling to update mine so could someone please help me?. I’ve followed the instructions, downloaded the drivers, restarted the computer, amongst other things in which the flash program won’t update my system once I plug in back in. The backup key won’t stay on my screen as long as it did yours in which it won’t even show a new date once It’s been opened, and so I’m at a loss as to why it’s not working for me but is everyone else.

I already have had this put on my RP2 and then now have lineage. I updated autoconfig files in retroarch and it said my RP2 was an ayn odin. I deleted RetroArch and then tried to reinstall with the apk file but something is messed up. And i want to go back to 8.1 since google apk never did install originally. I am visiting family. I want to know if i need my sd card in the RP2 during the installing of 8.1. i don't know if my daughter has enough room on her laptop for me to save my roms onto it to do this process. I do got a problem with the playstore: the playstore didnt show up in the installed apps so i installed an apk. the apk does load but when i try to log into my google account the app seems to freeze: the keyboard doesnt load. So, im unable to download any apps right now which is pretty annoying because i use emulator apps

I'm having the same problem, only mine is after I copied all of the files from my smaller 64GB SD card to my new 256GB card. I did the exfat format and copied everything EXACT from my old card to the new one. Everything works except for Retroid OS, which weirdly still has the wifi settings saved, but zero roms, and no access to the market (gives me a "game disk not inserted" error).

Great video, I finally managed to upgrade. I can't find the SD Card Backup V3 folder, where is it? Another problem can I access the "game market" but can't download (error failed to connect to..)? is there a preinstall sh file for internal and sd storage or are they both the same? in the video you put everything in sd card, is this for from internal guide? im little lost with the preinstall file because i can't find the one your using and iv seen some named sd_preinstall and external_preinstall

@@Sexyhomer sorry, won’t work on MacOS. It’s my primary OS as well, so that’s frustrating. But in the written guide I have a link to my guide on installing a Windows virtual machine on Macs, you could do that to run the updater.

@@nickindie4704 You guys might need the drivers located here. www.ytechb.com/mt65xx-preloader-driver/ In his written instructions, he goes over this error. I had the same thing happen, so I just went and got that driver installer above, and I was good to go.
