If you really wanted to you can make a 120V outlet wired with 240V. Yes switching power supplies like my computer's PSU has dual voltage and is slightly more efficient on 240V but don't plug anything else in it! (or just don't do that) Maybe if you have a crypto miner you'd run them 240 volts with the appropriate plug.

Great video, as someone who does DIY more from a necessity than because its fun, (Sometimes it is) this video helped tremendously. "The biggest misconception is the 220-volt outlet. Is it 220 or 240 volts?. Well, nowadays it's 240 volts. " Your right, that this is definitely something that confused me. I was wanting to install a plug for a welder/breaker.. and I was wondering how I'd go about it, now I know! My only question is, why do plugs have the "keyed" shapes, if.. how you hook up the "hots", don't matter? Like what's the purpose of that then? Thanks for your time!

same question. Other 240 Volt outlet requires a Neutral but for This NEMA 6-20 doesn't require a neutral?
@thenexthobby2 жыл бұрын
A 240v line consists of two 120v positives, and they are 180-degrees out of phase with each other. Each of these hot wires take turns being the return path to the transformer outside the house as the juice alternates back and forth. With 120v circuits, this circumstance doesn't exist ... you only have one phase with no corresponding return path unless the neutral wire is used. In other words, 240v AC "creates its own" return path by definition of how its two positives act (because, being 180-degrees apart in phase, they are not identical positives even if their voltages are each 120.)
@thenexthobby2 жыл бұрын
@@inspirehomeslosangeles6099 Part of it is convention, part of it is requirement ... if the appliance has its own internal transformer it can create a 120v AC source to power an internal clock or other display. This is what electric ranges and electric dryers do, if they use a 3-wire 240v cable. They don't need an external neutral because it exists inside the appliance. If they don't create an internal 120v source, they'll need an external neutral as part of the equation. A 4-wire 240 connection also provides an extra measure of safety if the ground isn't healthy.

So I get they use the ground instead of neutral but is that code? Seeing how the ground bar and neutral bar are connected to each other. Some boxes only have one bar for both.
@thenexthobby2 жыл бұрын
Yes it's "code," but code is only following physics here ... each 120 leg is 180-degrees out phase with the other, and that is why you'll hear electricians describe a 240 circuit as providing its own neutral (meaning, its own return path). If it did not, the power would never appear across the 2 lines regardless of code. Any ONE 120v line lacks a corresponding phase offset, which is why it needs a return path back to the transformer (i.e. the neutral wire.) The reason why touching just one positive 120 line jolts you is because you become the return path in that instance. Ground being one half of a 120v source is like neutral being one half of a 120v source ... irrelevant (and safe) unless a positive line is also part of the mix. Ground alone or neutral alone won't hurt you unless something somewhere is miswired and has not yet tripped a breaker or blown up the transformer outside to stop current flow.

@@Askmediy Thank You so very much for your fast reply! I work fixing Dental Equipments. I have just one dental equipment (sterilizer/autoclave) that the manufacture says Circuit Breaker 10Amp and this new outlet will be dedicated to test this equipment only. Because the Manufacture says 10Amp Breaker I thought it must be it. I got 15Amp cause I haven’t found 10Amp. The equipment has it’s own breaker…so…I understand I can get a 20Amp breaker and if something is wrong with the equipment the breaker of the equipment trips first. Ok!! I’ll get one breaker out of the panel and make another trip to Home Depot! Have a good sunday Sir!

Thank you for the lesson. Q1: How come the other white wires in the main box do not have red tape on them? Q2: As with DC wiring, how come you don’t have a red + and a black -negative wire? Thanks again 🙏‼️‼️
@thenexthobby2 жыл бұрын
You tape the wire to visually indicate it's a positive, when being used in that way. Those others are neutrals. I don't think anyone sells cables consisting of two blacks or two reds + plus ground.

I have a stupid question. I am putting a 220v outlet on a outdoor street light in my parking lot. There are 3 underground wires going to the light. 2 hots and a ground. The outlet i need to install is a 4 terminal outlet. Now obviously I know where the two hots go. And I'm guessing the ground goes to the outlet ground. Now what do I do with the neutral terminal? Do I just leave that empty?or should i move the gouund to the netural terminal and put the ground to the metal box? Please help
@AskmediyАй бұрын
@@sirgergorymmmc2231 well, first you need to know what does that light need. 220 with or without a neutral.
@sirgergorymmmc2231Ай бұрын
@Askmediy the light is existing and works fine. I'm adding a 220v outlet at bottom of pole to charge my ev. Running another wire underground thru conduit is just not gonna happen. Do I need the neutral ? Or can I get away with just the ground?
@carlodonnell146 Жыл бұрын
so how do you get 220v without a ground/neutral; I am under the impression that the current always needs a path back to the panel by way of the neutral?
@surferdude6426 ай бұрын
One wire is positive while the other is negative, so one is providing power while the other is returning it and they alternate at 60 Hz in North America. The load is always balanced, so no neutral wire is used.

I wired an outlet just like this years ago for a compressor....now, I have a new compressor and only need 120v. If my understanding is correct I really only need to remove the marking tape from my white wire, attach the white to the neutral bus bar, and then wire in a 120v outlet...correct? I think I might drop in two 120v breakers and run a 3 wire with ground, and then change out my box so I can have 2 outlets, each with their own protection.

I need the exact setup for my craftsman compressor, however in my panel all the neutral and ground wires go to the same and only bar in my panel. Is this okay to do? would I have to do a separate earth ground on my compressor motor?

No, this video is for a 20 amp. A dryer will need 30 amps. The wire for a dryer is much bigger. Blue wire? Hmmm that's a little strange.

what's confusing about double-pole breakers is the difference between the ones that have one switch and the ones that have two switches and when to use them?
@surferdude6426 ай бұрын
If it has one switch, the breaker would trip if either circuit is shorted or overloaded. If it has 2 switches they are tied together, so the results are the same. In theory, they could be used interchangeably, but use the one that's the same brand as the panel.
