I was thinking of leaving the column alone and loosening the pedal pivot bolt a bit. Then I could move that brake pedal brace out of the way.

Great tutorial my friend. I'm going to be replacing my power brake booster in my 94 trans am. It works fine but I'm building a show car. so my old brake booster is kinda rough looking. It's got some surface rust under the the 2 bolts and inside by the round rubber gasket inside..

it's a direct bolt in for the most part. early cars 82-84 might be a bit different. get one from a local store, wrap it up in plastic and test fit it. if it doesn't, return it

Ok so my car doesn’t have those circular canisters. I have a vacuum canister bolted to the firewall in between the brake booster and washer pump and it’s not connected so that shouldn’t be my issue as it’s not receiving any vacuum from the engine. What other things can I check? Thanks.

I did the swap and my Wilwood brakes keep locking up over a short period. My question is does the 4th Gen have the same pushrod length because when I loosen the nuts to the Master cylinder they release?

so there has been a string of people with your problem. SOMETHING changed recently with the parts. it's been 15+ years of 4th gen booster/master setups working fine then in 2019+ suddenly it's an issue.

I followed your 4th gen master cylinder / wilwood prop valve video to a T. Did everything exactly as you did. Still not happy with how squishy the brake pedal feels. They work, but just doesn't "feel" great. Do you thing doing this 4th gen booster will help?

@@3rdGenGuy Finished this just last night. OMG does the brakes feel like a world of difference! They feel like they "should" now. I recommend this upgrade to everyone with a third gen now. Couple side notes, the 10mm nuts for the master cylinder will swap over from the 3rd gen however the 4 bolts from the firewall are different from the 3rd gen so those you will need to replace the nuts there. Just note these nuts are 8M-1.25 size, not 8M-1.00... ask me how I know this. LOL

did you have a problem with your aftermarket caster camber plate pushing into the side of your master reservoir and tilting it? i am in the process of this mod right now and my umi plate is doing just that....to the point i'm afraid the reservoir will leak from the seals connecting it to the master bore. the only things i can think to do to fix this would be to shim the booster with washers on the bottom two studs (between booster and firewall) to get the master to angle up the 1/4 inch i need so the umi plates tucks underneath it. or possibly cut a 45* angle out of the top edge of the umi tower closest to the reservoir and do some re-welding.....thoughts? what year 4th gen booster, and master did you use??

yes, the Founders or UMI strut mounts tend to hit the master cly at high camber settings. there's no way around it until you go manual brakes. 4th gen booster/master just tell the parts store guy 2002 camaro SS.

if you have a metric car, i know you need the 98 ls1 master in order for your factory brake lines coming off the proportioning valve too be able to screw into master without having to change fittings. i made the mistake of getting 93 parts at first and the lines wouldn't connect in front

you can use them on a Disk/Drum car. this master doesn't play nice with the factory "low drag" calipers though. they work best with an aftermarket front brake kit

@@Dirtydeesdigital you aren't alone. I've seen a few guys recently with dragging brakes. the 1st thing to check is if the brake pedal is returning all the way forward to the driver. You can see this at 2:30 in the video. i had to pull back my brake light switch about 1/2in

Odd you had no problem with the bushing/gasket of the 4th gen fitting into the 3rd gen hole, the rubber on the 4th gen is a decent sized wider.

@@3rdGenGuy Did you actually look at how the seal and the firewall met? Bolt up sure, but I doubt it's a water proof connection, as the 3rd gen was, I'm only citing, because I've done it as well and the boot for the 3rd and 4th gens are different, the 4th gen is larger.

depends, early 87 and older cars are standard. the 4th gen booster is metric. both holes on the 4th gen booster are different threads and sizes as well.

@@brandonoliver9110 an 82 is standard, so it will be a Double flair. the 4th gen is a metric Bubble flair listed in the picture at the start of the video. so you need a Male bubble flair to female double flair adapter.

you can, however the 3rd gen booster Pin is 3/8in shorter. so you have more pedal travel as a result. i suggest doing both the 4th gen master and booster at 1 time.

Hey man, so when I disconnect the check valve from the brake booster and plug that line, leaving the booster disconnected, that rpm surge symptom I’m having goes away. Seems like it’s something with that check valve. I’ve tried blowing air through the check valve from the booster side to the manifold and I do have air coming through, is that normal?

Just a FYI Recently many 3rd gen guys who installed the 4th gen Booster+Master have had issues with brake calipers dragging. I'm not sure what the issue is. The 4th gen combo has been used with success for 15+ years with hundreds of 3rd gen builds. Suddenly multiple people are having issues So be diligent about parts, I don't know if the manufacturers changed something like pin depths on newer 4th gen masters.

I am plagued by this issue. I’m guessing the pushrod length on the booster is slightly too long and caused the master cylinder to begin holding pressure to my rear brakes, causing drag. It ultimately killed the master cylinder which leaked and killed the booster. Is there adjustment available on the booster pushrod length where the master bolts up? It doesn’t appear adjustable.

@@kevinkelly5257 it's not adjustable. but it's so weird that ppl are having issues out of the blue. it seems like maybe the part makers changed a pin length or something. kinda like the AC delco steering idler arm being changed recently and it's now wrong for 3rd gens.

I see there is like one other option, the Centric PN 16080549 that is a bit more expensive, but I’m thinking it’s probably the exact same thing. I would hate to abandon this upgrade path, but right now after driving for just a few miles, the car can’t be driven because of the dragging issues.

Question for you, I have an rpm surge of about 200 rpm’s when I depress the brakes, then returns to normal, then same surge when releasing the brakes, then back to normal. I replaced the brake booster, booster check valve, booster check filter and all rubber hoses connecting those items and still same surge. Any ideas?? I honestly don’t remember if it did this before I started paying attention to it last week while replacing items just because they looked old.

if you have stock brakes, that's usually the issue. the 4th gen master doesn't work well with factory calipers.

Apparently the 93-97 Master cylinder has different threads for the brake lines. One line fits, the other is too big. So they changed the threads 93-97, and then changed them back to the 3rd gen thread patterns from 98-02. Thanks GM. owning a GM vehicle reminds me every day of why I'm a Ford guy.

pretty straight forward. 3rd gen ones has a 3/8 line, 4th gen has a larger line. just swap valves like in the video and bam, it works.

I think that's a firebird issue since the hood lines are petty low on those.
