How to install a cello Tailpiece

I have followed your very good instructions! After having setting the bridge in right position ( and soundpost )and convector angle and adjusted the tailpiece ( C- string ring F sharp between bridge and tailpiece and the rest in tune ) the settlement and positions is fixed and very easy to control and maintain just by tuning ( check the F sharp ) and now and then adjust the bridge angle. My cello sounds better and more equaly day by day. Really recommend this to other cellists.

Is the F# placement of the tail piece a substitute for the measurements? It was my understanding that that the distance from the nut to the bridge must be six times the distance between the bridgee and where the strings terminate on the tail piece tuners. No?

Thanks for the video and talking about the afterlegnth on the C string I want to ask your opinion about the harp shaped tail pieces ? I have one on my cello because of its looks but I've noticed that it doesn't sound as it used to do and I feel like I'm always forcing my bow in order to get sound out of the cello, should I put back the old tail piece ? It was a WITTNER tail piece, Wich one you recommend ? Thanks

Hi Personally I prefer the straight tailpieces for many reasons. I would definitely recommend you to try going back to the wittner, and see if you can get the C string afterlength to an F Sharp, let me know how it turns out.

Witter tailpiece serves as student aid to compensate poorly made pegs. The weight dulls the tonal projection.

@@SamsonCheung thanks, I've been thinking about the Acustikus tail piece but the tail gut is just a wire and I've heard that sometimes it cuts through the saddle

You can actually adjust the pitch by bending the top of your bridge, sometime when tuning, your bridge will move. The more intune to F# the better. Good luck!!

How long should the tailpiece be from the bridge to achieve F# note on the C string? 115mm? At 120mm I get a G note.

Usually 115 get you a G and 120 get you F#, try doing 122 and let the tailgut stretch and make sure you adjust your bridge as well, some times moving a tiny little bit makes a big difference. Hope this help

It worths,but the sound quality still mostly relies on the bridge and the instrument itself, tailpiece works also,but relatively less

Tell me something - a luthier told me today that nylon tailguts are terrible because they stretch, and overtime this stretched the whole setup mechanism forward until SNAP! Is this true? I’d of course prefer that my tailguts be made of only the most durable and safe materials..

Yes, and the connecting area sometimes will loosens and I have seen some that just break off completely

Hi Kevin You should try to put the tailgut as wide as you can, it will adjust it self depending on what tailpiece you got and what material your tailgut it is. Let me know if I can be of further help

Try D on the G string first, violins are harder to do since it’s much smaller. Some of my client benefits from C# and some feels right at home on D. Good luck and keep me posted
