How to install a fixed bed into your van conversion - Ikea bed hack

Installing the fixed bed first and then installing the electrical, water, and gas systems in the garage area is how most everyone does it. But I saw one “tour” where it looks like the systems were installed first and finally a single piece of plywood was laid across the system cabinets for the mattress. This is certainly a cheaper, lighter, and more space efficient approach. It requires more planning but is much easier since you’re not working under anything to install your systems.

Hey Oli, did you screw the batten lengths into the skorva beams? If not, what stops it from moving when getting on/off the bed?

Another great video, thanks! Did you rivnut wood behind the wall and then screw those brackets into wood? We put rivnuts in today for our bed because of how solid they are, wanting to utilise as many as we can, now we have seen this, it's awesome and probably what we're gonna do :)

Thank you for the video. I'd already seen the metal beams in Ikea and thought it would be a good idea to use them. So to find a video showing how to use them was fantastic. Is there a reason why you cut and screwed your own slats rather than the Ikea slats?

Thanks! It just means you can make the bed to the size you want, whereas Ikea slats are a set size

I’m just at this stage in our boxer conversion now. Is there any reason you used your own flat 2x1 timber for the slats, as opposed to using the pre-made slats also available at Ikea? The Ikea ones can be bought separately for the Luröy model, but are curved/sprung so perhaps this isn’t as easy to fix to the beams/ framing PSE?

We do use the ones from Ikea now and they work great! (this video was done a few years ago)

If you're gonna use Ikea parts, why not also use their L shaped rails that support the slats at the side of the bed? You would save on weight and be done a lot faster.
