After installing mine, I have BiG PROBLEMS and lots of check engine and error lights telling me to take it to my dealer. And it has to be towed there. I can't drive it. There must be something that I received for the $700 that is defective, such as the ethanol sensor or computer, or there may be something about the wiring process that Chris left out that we needed to know about. I am asking eFlex Fuel to either get me someone who can get it working or allow me to return it. I don't have $700 to just throw away like that. @alexg-m6e6 ай бұрын
Cars made after 2000 are designed to run on E10, which is the “regular” gasoline sold nowadays at gas stations. E10 already contains 10% ethanol. So almost every car on the road today is compatible with ethanol. That’s why it’s not complicated to convert a gasoline car to run on E85. If the car was made after 2000, no need to make significant modifications to the fuel system (fuel lines, tank, …). Ethanol conversions are quite popular in some parts of Europe like France, where gasoline is very expensive (about $8.10 per gallon for gas, compared to $3.70 per gallon for E85). I’ve been using ethanol with an eFlexFuel kit since 2019 and drove 50k+ miles, haven’t had any issues.

Trivia: The "cheap car fuel" alternative in most of Europe is LPG, which has similar characteristics as mentioned by you on the E85 (that is, is cheap, has high octane rating which makes it great for high-compression engines, is more environmentally friendly by being made from simpler hydrocarbonates (mostly propane and butane, whereas gasoline is pentan and some higher fractions) but also has a slightly less energy density than classic gasoline which causes slightly higher fuel consumption). It is a gas though, so it needs a separate high-pressure gas tank (usually installed in the trunk or in the place of the spare wheel) and there are no jerry-cans for that, but also is not affected by humidity and tends to mix way better with air (gas/gas vs gas/liquid aerosol), especially at lower ambient temperatures. As for the cost, assuming 3.875 L per 1 US Gallon, and 3.00 PLN as an average price (based on my own observations), 1 US Gallon of LPG would cost ~11.36 PLN, which as of 4th August 2023 is about $2.82.
@haroldhenderson2824 Жыл бұрын
When I was researching for an idea, Methane, LP, and E85 all had about the same anti-knock rating. For use in a higher compression engine, it came down to availability/cost for the energy potential you needed.
@whogg Жыл бұрын
LPG has many issues, the LPG tank takes a lot of space in the trunk, the system is made in a garage and is in 90% of the cases not up to code, engine always goes bad after years of use on LPG due to the nature of the fuel - there is no lubrication as it is literally gas.
@vojtechtomes6231 Жыл бұрын
@@whogg My father's old car had an LPG system equipped and I remember there being a valve lubrication solution where you would put additional oil to lubricate the valves.
@RundeKatze Жыл бұрын
@@whogg There were some particular engines with valve seat problems. Some ford engines tend to have valve seat pitting around the time where LPG conversions were a big thing. And most people with LPG conversions blamed the fuel for it. The problem is normal gasoline driven cars had the same issue but nobody talked about it. It's like the same story with burning battery powered cars today. How many gasoline cars burned down by accident? Many more but nobody cares. But when a BEV burns down oh boy.... the entire world goes crazy. But you are right: There are many "not up to code shtboxes" out there that have been converted in a garage or an unskilled workshop that can be harmful to the engine or a potential hazard at the gas station. This LPG conversion kits that are up to spec have to be carefully set up and tuned to be a real replacement for gasoline. But most workshops don't have the experience with that kind of conversions. So it is better NOT to blame LPG for explosions at gas stations or damaged engines but the people who handle it wrong.
@joshhhab Жыл бұрын
@@whogg valve lubrication is not a big deal on petrol or LPG. Only diesel fuel has enough lubrication properties but diesel fuel is injected directly into cylinders. I have 2nd gen Prius with LPG conversion installed by me and I drove 95k km just on LPG. Timer in LPG controller showed about 3000 hours on LPG and less than 180 hours on petrol just for preheating, and most of this time is late autumn, winter, early spring time with negative temperature. Maximum preheating time on petrol before switching to LPG is about 10 minutes when Ambien temperature is below -15 degrees Celsius

Hey Chris, how's it going? I hope everything's fine. I'm from Brazil, and ethanol is extremely common to use in many vehicles here. The vast majority come factory-ready for flex fuel, running on both fuels, and always with impressive power gains when fueled with ethanol. It's the favorite fuel for tuners and performance enthusiasts, as it allows for higher boost pressures and keeps the temperature stable, reducing the risk of running too lean. The issue is that this fuel tends to cause injector clogging due to oxidation. So, we avoid using it in vehicles with direct injection. In these cases, for vehicles with direct injection, it's preferred to use Premium gasoline, as the maintenance cost for direct injectors is exorbitant, and once they get clogged, they can rarely be recovered. Greetings from Brazil, Chris. Keep being as awesome as always! Edit: Hi there, how are you doing? I saw someone commenting on finding it strange that ethanol causes oxidation and consequently clogs the injectors. The thing is, here in Brazil, our ethanol is hydrated, which means it contains a small percentage of water in its composition. Even though it's very low, it's still enough to cause oxidation in the medium and long term. Maintenance for imported cars here is not affordable for many of us, which is why many Brazilians choose not to do it. However, scheduled maintenance includes cleaning and servicing the injectors, which is why this happens so often here, especially in models with direct injection, where maintenance costs are much higher. Keep being awesome, everyone! Ah... and if I'm not mistaken, our ethanol has a standard of 100 octane and can go up to 103 octane.

@@AutoAddicted427 I dont know how is the ethanol in the rest of the world, but here it have like 5% of water in the composition, probably that's the cause.
@gabolm Жыл бұрын
@@LucasOliveira-nr6ud The water in ours is because ethanol is a hygroscopic liquid, so it attracts water, “there's nothing we can do”. Anhydrous Ethanol remains 99% "pure" as there are processes in its storage to prevent contact with air and thus with water in the air. When mixed with gasoline, the ethanol's ability to absorb water from the air is reduced, but it will still have some.

Nice video! Here in Brazil, problably every car comes from the factory with this type of system. And every gas station throughout the country has ethanol as an option. A problem that I see when I use ethanol is that my car dont start right away when the weather is cold. Because of that, some older cars has like a small gas tank in the engine bay to put regular gas just do start the car.
@JesusisLOVEJohn- Жыл бұрын
⚠️Notice to everyone: If do you decide to do this you will want to do more research. For example, the ethanol in E85 tends to overtime to dry out rubber fuel lines which end up cracking and spilling fuel. So you'll want to replace those rubber lines. I would recommend watching other videos online as well Chris's 2nd video on ethanol when he comes out with it. P.S. Your videos are awesome Chris!

THANK YOU CHRIS! Where was this vid when I was trying to install the eFlex kit into my own car? Haha. Lots of comments from people that have not tried eFlexFuel or E85. I researched the heck out of this before getting a kit 1yr ago. I am in the USA and run E85 from the pumps. Here is my experience: E85 does not cause issues to the fuel system. This was my first concern. There is noticeably more HP/TQ on E85. You can feel the difference when driving, it feels more responsive than when on gas. I also notice my vehicle downshifts less on E85, I think because it is making more torque at driving RPMs. My MPG are not hugely impacted on E85. Yes, there is some dip, but in my case it is closer to 1-2MPG which makes E85 WAY cheaper to run than gas in my case. E85 does not cause issues to the fuel system. This was my first concern before I installed. Modern fuel systems are up for the job, there's been quite a bit of research here. There is a reason high HP cars run E85 - even the new Demon 170. I trust the compatibility check Chris mentioned, there is zero reason to think otherwise. I think that covers it. I don't mind different opinions but I did my research before getting eFlex and have had zero issues, so it's funny seeing the armchair analysts comment without any firsthand use. If anyone has any questions about the kit you can reply here and I will try to get back to you. Thank you again Chris! This one was a nice surprise.
@hwalton2113 ай бұрын
I installed the kit as explained by Chris and the instructions that come with it, but I am getting multiple errors on my dash when I try to start the car. There is a brake issue (brake pedal goes to the floor) and there are multiple other errors telling me to take it to Toyota, so I am ready to return this for a refund unless eFlex Fuel has someone I can take it to (have to have it towed so it has to be nearby). I did everything exactly as Chris said, but something is wrong. It will connect to the app but there is no reading for ethanol % and I don't think fuel is getting to the engine. Also there is no confirmation in the app that each of the 4 cylinders are connected. Something is very wrong. I will call eFlex Fuel tomorrow and hope they can help me.

I can't give you an accurate answer, but I'd suspect you'd see a drop on your overall MPG, but the overall cost to fill up the tank will decrease (depending on the cost per gallon in your area), resulting in a fairly even trade off between the two options, for fuel economy. The more noticeable differences will be in the amount of pollutants the car emits & the difference in power between the fuels.

And I wish the fossil fuel lobby and politicians in Germany didn't kill that option by raising the taxes on E85 to be similar to regular gas. Since cars use up to 1/3rd more when running E85, it became an even more expensive option and no one bought it anymore, so you can't get it anymore and no flexible-fuel vehicles are sold here. And after all that, now there are talks/demands to limit/reduce the maximum speeds everywhere to reduce the pollution from the vehicles, which could've beed prevented in the first place if not for the artificial tax... 🤡

1 Thing you forgot to mention, while 1 liter of gasoline needs 14.7 liters of air (Stoichiometric ratio, or in other words, Lambda 1), E85 needs 9.7 liters, so you will need ~30% more from it. So the real price difference is not what you see at the gas station, but it is a saving if the E85 is cheaper by more than 30%. One interesting fact about E85, it cools the combustion chamber and air (like rubbing alcohol on your skin makes it cool because of the fast evaporation). If you check the Hoonicorn there are no intercoolers, only 2 big turbo at the intakes. For E85 you have to make absolutely sure that your fuel system is Ethanol-proof, which can cause leaks, low fuel pressure, etc. Great video Chris!
@jeffumbach Жыл бұрын
Yeah I know people who found out the hard way that E85 wasn't saving them any money because they were filling up more often due to the decreased MPG. Also acceleration takes a big hit due to having much less energy density.
@tuomoisokivijarvi5105 Жыл бұрын
With eFlex you get an average consumption increase worth only 10 to 25% with E85. Tried it with 3 different cars. Smaller Japanese cars get smaller increase on eFlex. My latest car got 40 horses more as well. I have saved about 3000 bucks in my past 10 years driving on E85. And had more octane and power than if I had used premium or even V-power...
@AutoAddicted427 Жыл бұрын
I initially thought the same when I was researching before ordering my eFlex kit. I've been running it abt 1yr now. My real-world MPG hit has been closer to 1.5-2mpg under normal driving. The best explanation I can make for this is the ethanol sensor optimizes fueling for the exact E% rather than dumping in 30% over. I also notice my vehicle downshifts less when I have E85 in the tank, likely because it is making more HP/TQ at any given RPM. I credit the lower amt of downshifts with saving my MPG. This is one of those cases that the real world experience was more telling than any of the research I made, haha. For me, I have saved considerably when I can run E85 (I will also fill up gas if E85 is nowhere near).

Interesting idea there Chris. I had a 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.3L v6 from 2009 to 2017. It was able to run E85, so I ran a few "test" tanks. I found that I got 30-35% less MPG than E10-E15 (the usual "gas" now). So unless I found the gas price more than 30% less, which is rare...surprised you found it as low as you did. It wasn't worth it to me in the 09 Caravan to run it. Maybe it's less of a loss with a smaller vehicle (like the Prius or Del Sol)? Maybe a better test would be to put that kit into a larger vehicle like the size of my former 09 Caravan.

@@collincutler2278 Yeah. I don't drive my car a ton since I work from home. I had a 2010 Ford Fusion V6, could run on E85 from the factory. I found that it was around 20-25% less efficient on E85, so I think it depends on the load being put on the engine. The V6 from the caravan was putting out 175 HP for a 4300lb van, whereas the Fusion had 240 HP for a 3300lb sedan. I only ran E85 a few times out of curiosity, because the savings on the cost per gallon was offset by the loss of efficiency.
@Ikantspell4 Жыл бұрын
100% sure you won't save money BUT if you have a boosted car that has a turbo or supercharger and get it tuned to work with the super high octane fule you can get more power! You don't do this modification to save money though. Even if you could drive for a few cents a mile less you would have to do lots of driving to recover the expense and effort of making the car flex fule. Unless you are distilling your own alcohol (yes that's something you can do but it's not easy) it's going to cost you more or similar per mile driven because even if per gallon it's less expensive each gallon won't go as far. It's hard to describe but If you have driven a supercharged car you know the fun of pulling on to the highway and being at speed before you're off the on ramp. Not a practical nessesity but very fun, especially if it's a DIY mechanic project.

Great content and from my experience in carburetors with very little modifications this is fantastic fuel. I’ve converted 2 classic tractors, one self propelled lawn mower, one ATV and one Swisher pull behind finish mower over 3 years ago with zero issues. No moisture issues, even after winter storage! No degraded fuel lines, fuel tank or carburetor issues whatsoever. Burns far cleaner than gasoline without the awful exhaust smell on classic engines without all the pollution control gadgets. I will be converting my 2001 fuel injection Dodge Ram with this kit. You will burn more fuel with E-85 which is more than offset with the fuel costs savings. Yes it will start in winter on a carburetor engine with either manual choke or preheat carb on small engine with a blast of warm air from a hair dryer or heat gun. Only takes about 15 to 30 seconds of warm air on the carb. Don’t believe all the bad rumors on E-85. Great cleaner, cooler running fuel. As a bonus your oil will stay cleaner longer than it will with gasoline. 😊

Just remember that ethanol is highly hygroscopic, meaning it will draw moisture from air and it will leech into the gas tank. The longer car sits and higher ethanol content in your fuel, the more water will be drawn into your gas tank, creating visible water-ethanol layer below the gasoline layer in phase separation. Fuel pump inlets usually are as low as possible in gas tanks so they will suck in the ethanol-water mixture first on which modern engines CAN'T RUN ON. You will be cranking that engine until all the water-ethanol phase is gone or something gives in and dies, probably the starter.

Fuel systems are sealed systems so this should really be minimal, doubt it would cause any problem.
