I had a situation and I am offering this additional information: I could not get sound out of my sub and I tried every hookup. Until I realized my receiver has volume adjustments to each individual speaker, L,R,CENTER,SR,SL,SUB. Remember to check the the SUB volume is not off or all the way down in the settings of the receivers menu/mode options. Good luck.

LFE means low frequency effect, it's a channel in movie soundtracks only, not used in music 2 channel stereo.

if you set the subwoofers on diferent phase positions they will cancel each other out, the phase switch gets usefull when you want to place the sub behind the listening position(to match the front speakers phase or if you have one in the front and one in the back(in this case you must reverse the back one only)

If you connect to the speaker cables. Does that mean that there will be 2 sets of wires for left and right. So u will connect 2 wires into the stereo left hole.... 1 set goes to the sub left and 1 set goes to the left speaker. Then the same for the right? I don't have 4 speakers outputs from the stereo you see....?

Why don't you show where to connect each of these types of connections on the amplifier? What good is this video without showing them? Connection type two....the red and white rca plugs for instance. Where do you connect them on the amp? Tape the rca ends on top with duct tape and hope for the best? Or look for the aux watch that reads "aux duct tape input"?

SBJ because every receiver is different. Everything is labeled or at least should be on a reciver. As far as connecting if you don't have a sub out port you should use the RCA output which is the red and white. Or use the speaker out connectors if they only connect via speaker wire.

I've added a turntable into the mix via phono box into analogue inputs. Sub doesn't get the low level signal, any solution? All digital sources are fine. Only has one pair of inputs and speaker terminals on Wharfedale sub. Thanks.

I had the same problem. Check your speaker settings and select "small speakers" that worked for me.

I have a question....i recently purchased a tube preamp with 2 audio outputs. one output will be dedicated to a tube amp with a pair of 3 way speakers.The other audio output i want to use to run another tube amp to run 1 subwoofer...i do not want to use the subwoofers integrated amp because using them would defeat the purpose of the tube amp and it's sweet sound compared to ss. I have been looking for passive subwoofers but mostly all are powered. Now my question is.....can i run my tube amp to the speaker inputs of the subwoofer without using the integrated amp of the subwoofer????or would i still have to power the subwoofer using it's integrated amp???

I understood that you double connect from the OLD stereo amp 1- to the usual left/right speakers and a 2-new connection on the same amp output into the "high-level input" from the Subwoofer, right? The subwoofer needs a source, so you can simply run wires from another speaker which is close to the subwoofers location, or run wire from the receiver directly to the subwoofer.

I have a Onkyo receiver that only has one subwoofer output that is strictly a bare wire connection (uses a small clamp where the bare wire is inserted for negative and positive). My subwoofer only has this type of connection for the "high level" with two channels and uses an rca type connection for the other one channel. How do I go about connecting this? Should I strip one side of a rca cable in order to connect it to my receiver?

Low Frequency Effect, it's a channel dedicated to home theater bass effects that use it in 5.1, 7.1 etc. the .1 is the low frequency effect channel, the advantages are that movie soundtracks use that channel individually in sound mixing for bass effect.

Low Filter Envelope. If you change the the slope of the Envelope, it will cut out upper "dubby" frequencies which can sound somewhat unpleasant to some people who say it sounds "boxy". Others like to have a flat scientific response.

@@esa2236 It the low frequency channel, so any frequencies below a set point will be sen there. That point is controlled by the receiver automatically or through the filters on the receiver or SW. Always yield to the receiver which may disable the SW crossover anyway when its plugged in. Another reason why LFE is preferred. Save the coax for your TV. The SW uses a single mono RCA and sometimes XLR.

Active subs have their own power supply so this would not drain your speakers. It will simply use the speaker signal to tell the subwoofer what to play

Hi, everyone! So I have been using our home theater for a year now. I'm currently studying DC circuits on a Computer Engineering program so that's why I have a less knowledge on impedance matching. The scenario is that the home theater runs 5.1 channels with the port of subwoofer rated at 4 ohms. The current subwoofer is a 4-ohm subwoofer at 250 watts. What does it mean by the watt rating of the speaker when the total output power of the amplifier is 1000? The case is that I feel that the subwoofer does not give that much bass. So I'm planning on upgrading my subwoofer to a 14 inch from a 10 inch. I found a 14 inch subwoofer on our nearby appliance store and have it tested. I was beyond satisfied by the bass it gave. The 14 inch subwoofer is rated at 300 watts at 8 ohms. My question is: What exactly will happen if I'll hook it up to my receiver? Will it sound the same as to what I felt on the store? Will it burn the amplifier? Or somewhat, the speaker(the planning to buy, 14 inch)? It's Pioneer that already has a casing. Take note that this subwoofer is a powered one like the one that is shown in this video. The one that is needed to be plugged. A detailed help to my problem is very much appreciated, guys. :) Advanced thanks to you and cheers for your knowledge on impedance matching. :)

Can someone please help me... I have a 5.1 channel home Theatre system which doesn't have an LFE output nor does it have a 2.0 setup. How will I connect an active subwoofer to it, should I use the high-/speaker subwoofer output to the active sub and then back to the passive sub, I don't think the left and right front speakers get low frequencies as they are sent to the subwoofer... And how effective is this technique, using the speaker level inputs, will that influence the frequency response of the active sub or lead to greater distortion? You said that badly but I hope you figured it out by now. All receiver have 2.0 btw. I you don't have a dedicated LFE, you simply feed the SW both left and right stereo to the RCA input on the SW. The SW will filter out everything except the low frequencies. In that case, you have to manually fine tune the crossover.

Anyone able to tell me why my subwoofer (active/home/basic amp stereo) only comes on when music is quite loud? I've toyed around with the crossover settings but no matter what I do I just can not get the sub' to cut in at lower volumes. Maybe I'm assuming the impossible? I 'get' that the sub' is great when playing music loudly, but impossible when at low/lower volumes? There certainly are times when I don't want to listen to music so loud but wish those beautiful 'lows' from the sub' would make themselves known. I'm using the direct (fibre cable) coil/cable to do so which I assume to be one of the best/better ways to have hooked up. Note: limited skills on these things so any somewhat coded audiophile lingo' is likely to go straight over my head! Simple would be greatly appreciated! TIA.

In stereo, you have two channels. Each channel has it's own "low end". Therefore, to capture it you need to feed the subwoofer both channels and it will play the low end from both channels in mono. Because low frequencies are non directional to our ears, it does not affect the stereo image in our brains.
