How To Install A Honeywell Thermostat RTH2300B

So I am 68 yrs old, my smart ecobee is defective as are neighbors also; I can't pay for labor so changed to this honeywell with your help! Didn't know if I could do it, but I DID IT!! Thank you so much from a senior citizen without experience. I saved more than $350.

One thing you should mention is how to change the cycling frequency to match your specific heating system. For that thermostat model press the 2 arrow buttons at the same time for 5 seconds; the first setting function (called 5) will change the cycle frequency (2, 3, 5 or 6 times an hour maximum), if you have a steam boiler set this to 2, if you have a hot water boiler set this to 3, gas/oil furnace uses the default 5, and electric furnace should be set to 6. The manual explains more of this and other advanced settings on page 9. This particular setting is really important because if you have a steam boiler it should not be cycling more than twice an hour, by design its not effective at higher cycle rates.

This is the best video showing how to install this thermostat correctly. The large wall plate is a great idea. I do not have this issue as I can sand the drywall and paint over with exact same color (saved from a recent home painting job). The large wall plate makes this look better though. I love it.

Just swapped out my thermostat. The swap is the easy part....the difficult part was figuring out where to put the drywall anchos because of all the damage to the sheetrock and the wacky position of the stud. Instead of drilling MORE holes and putting in more screw, I suggest using 3M Command Adhesive strips. They are designed for hanging pictures, so they are more than strong enough for holding a thermostat. And, they can be removed without damaging the wall. Also, I don't get why when people are painting they don't remove the thermostat, switch and outlet covers. It takes about the same amount of time as using masking tape and gives a much nicer job. In the case of the thermostat it is light enough that one could leave it hanging by the wires until the paint dries.

Great idea for covering the wall damage. Also, switch plates do come in various sizes. So, if you need to cover a larger area it is likely you can get a larger plate.

Timestamp 7:14 When installing batteries, I would recomend to put a piece of tape on the back or bottom of the thermostat with a date on it indicating when the batteries were last changed.

Thank you for the video. However, my old thermostat has a total of 7 existing wires: Green(G),Yellow(Y),White(W2),Red(RH)with jumper(RC), Orange(O/B),Blue(C) and Black(W/E). The Honeywell thermostat RTH2300B has B,O,G,Y,W, NOT USED, R & RC Does it mean that this thermostat RTH2300B will not work for me? if it does, then where the Blue(C) and Black(W/E) should be connected to? You could make this even cleaner by cutting away drywall, putting in a 3-gang low-voltage box, and using a blank 3-gang plate with a hole drilled in the middle for the thermostat wire (it's all low-voltage so the field modification of the plate shouldn't matter at all in terms of code). This gives a secure mounting point where the plate could be replaced in all sorts of neat ways. You could swap it for a different color plate, or a metal one. The possibilities are endless. Obviously in this case, the stud in the way made that option not viable. But if the damaged area doesn't intersect with a stud, installing a low-voltage box behind it seems like the ticket.

It's amazing, that this Honeywell 2300 only supports the batteries to keep the thermostat working and the bluewire probably kept it on.

Hi! Great video! I had my old thermostat (white and rogers) which I removed because it was defected and the temperature I kept setting it to would auto drop form 71 to 62 and the heat would never turn on. I followed your instructions and put the yellow wire to W and the red wire to RC as per previous thermostat. Now the heat turned on but the thermostat isn’t controlling it. It won’t let me turn it off or it won’t follow the temperature i am setting. But it is reading the temperature in the room. Did I do something wrong?

Thank you for the video - I have a problem - When running my upstairs air conditioner, the induction fan cycles up and runs for a minute, then turns off - repeats a few minutes later until a/c turns off. From what I've read induction fan shouldn't be turning on if the a/c is running (it doesn't on my downstairs unit). Unit is running fine otherwise, red light on circuit board is solid (no errors). Ideas as to why the induction fan cycles off/on when running a/c? Only difference in mine here is that Ive got red into RC and a jumper between RC and R.

Thanks for the video! I'm having an issue with my trane touchscreen thermostat, I have a package trane heat pump. When the outside temperature falls below 40deg, my pump struggles to keep up and I know the the auxiliary should be kicking in but it doesn't. I have to turn on the emergency heat before the temperature will come back up. I don't think the thermostat is wired correctly, any help would be greatly appreciated 👍

Hey Jeff, I am pretty limited on my heat pump knowledge but it is my understanding that a properly wired thermostat should kick in with supplemental (emergency) heat if the temp is close or below freezing. You could investigate a bit more the wiring diagrams online and compare to your setup or just call in a local HVAC to do a quick check. Usually this should only be a minimum charge of $75 - $100. If you are comfortable you could flip the switch at your furnace and then confirm no power at the thermostat wires with a non contact voltage tester.

Hello, I bought this thermostat to replace different make and model thermostat. The one I'm replacing had 6 wires. I called the tech support line and was told that it would work if I followed the installation diagram for the 4 wire procedure, taking off the blue and the brown wire. It doesn't work. I have a gas furnace the thermostat switch is on the gas setting. I don't know if I should have taken the jumper off of the thermostat. Also, I noticed that you used the blue wire instead of the yellow regarding the diagram. I did take a photo of the old wire connections and have the old thermostat to describe how they were connected. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would go to the furnace and look at the circuit oars to confirm what color wires are connected to each of the terminals on the board. Some times the past technician or DIYer switched up the Comoros causing confusion.

Do you have any experience installing a Google Nest Power Connector on an electric furnace that doesn't have a control panel? The strip that holds the thermostat wires and furnace wires are on top of the furnace. It's a weird setup because the furnace is what I would say is a half size furnace and then the water heater sits in front of it inside the closet so it's hard to reach. I had no issues installing the actual thermostat but it tells me that it's not strong enough and I may have issues with the batteries draining fast or the furnace may not run as smoothly. I can see the letters on the front side of the strip that hold the thermostat wires but can't see the back side where the furnace wires connect. I have read the instruction for attaching the Power Connect and understand how to do it but without being able to see the back side I'm hesitant to try it. Plus the wires coming out of the furnace attaching to the strip are not the same color as what the thermostat wires are.

Hi, Thank you for the video. I tried to replace my bad thermostat with RTH2300B with the same set up as before, which only use Red and Green wires. The White and Black were not used. That said, after I installed with just green and red wires, my boiler didn’t run as programmed. However, when I switched FAN ON, it runs but ignore my settings. It kept burning nonstop. Can you help?
