How To Install A New Shift Cable Into A 7spd Microshift Shifter

In this video, I run through the process of installing a new shift inner cable and housing into a 7 speed Microshift TS39 shifter with a M21 rear derailleur. The Shifter is also compatible with any Shimano 7 speed indexed derailleur.

Cool I didn't know about moving the shift lever to find the cable hole. I'm not sure how hard it is to snake the new cable through this shifter (you did say it can be tricky) but on some shifters it can be very frustrating. On those I'll snip the old cable before pulling it all the way out. Then join the new cable to the old cable with a couple of wraps of electrical tape. Now the old cable can guide the new cable through the shifter.

The cable to my back derailleur broke off inside the shifter. I could not see inside the shifter well, but did not see remains of the old cable -- no frayed cable, etc. I could pass the new cable through the shifter as shown in the video but could not get it to seat. After many attempts and much effort, I finally took a stiff wire about the same diameter as the cable (electrical wire, 14 gauge I think) and pushed it into the shifter through the hole where the cable exits. This dislodged the knob that had come from the old, broken cable, and which had stayed stuck inside the shifter. The rest went smoothly. Thank you for the helpful video.

I had a crash a few days ago and the advent 9spd shifter completely broke from the ring and JB Weld could not hold them together. It sounds silly that you have to reroute the cable which in my case is internal just to replace the shifter. the cable end knob seems to be deeply embedded into the shifter and the only way to replace the shifter is to take the cable out and put it through again. am I correct?
