Thank you so much for this. For some reason most of the videos on fixing handrails are all against studded walls and not into brick so this is extremely helpful and conforting for me
@antonynewitt6708 Жыл бұрын
Good effort all I would say is when measuring up make sure you do it from the same part of the step at the top and bottom. Always measure from the nose of the tread. Your rail would get lower as you got up the stairs as you took that measurement from the back of the tread

whats the best way to fix a loose handrail, where the holes have become too big for the screws?
@DanielJohnHowTo2 жыл бұрын
Few options: 1.Try putting some dowel (diy store) into the hole, then some gripfill around the piece of dowel and let it set solid 2. you could try deeper screws or 3. a piece of timber running the entire length behind then fix the rail to that.

Good job with the chalk line, only thing i will say, is your pipes at the bottom of the stairs that is a finger trap. Ideally you would cut the rail to suit the gap all the way down the stair, but a good video for guys not knowing how to do it👍🏻

Thanks for this Dan much appreciated. One thing when you took the first measurement you said the bannister width was 4cm and the bracket 8cm. But when you measure at the top of the stairs you mark at 87cm but then when you add the bracket you get 90cm which suggests the bracket is 3cm, or am I missing something ?

@DanielJohnHowTo4 жыл бұрын
bigger raw plugs, move the supports or pump a load of gripfill into the holes rettach and let it set a few options.
@justintemp11 ай бұрын
Got a bit confused with the measurements. You say bannister is 4cm and bracket 8cm which means 12cm, but when you measure the bottom step you say 78cm which makes sense for 90cm But you say 85cm + 4 which is 87cm...? Which is confusing...

I have moved into the new house and all the banister screws are loose and the banister is coming off the wall. There are as well some extra holes so I suspect this had happened before and this was a second attempt. I am just worried that I will do it and end up with the same problem again. Do I need to use a stud finder or it doesn't really matter where you put the screws?
@stevefoley40735 жыл бұрын
Easy. Re-drill the holes so you have a nice clean hole, new plugs that are just big enough to need tapping home, and the right size screws. If it's a stud wall, use special plugs designed for stud walls. If none of this works, 'cos the existing holes are so crumbly with the movement that they're no good, start the installation as if it's the first one, just shift the installation a few cm down or up, whichever you prefer, so you're not drilling too close to the old holes. The disadvantage of this option is the need to fill the old holes and repaint the wall(s). If it were me, I'd do this option straight off anyway - better job.

@chrisrobinson77282 жыл бұрын
I noticed that you measured wrong at the top of the stairs, you should be measuring from the pitch (where the bull nose of the tread is) but you measured at the back of the tread, which would make you a whole step height too low!
@andrewlee61526 жыл бұрын
You DO NOT measure the height of the handrail , from the going of the step, you measure it from the PITCH line.. The Pitch line, is the same line as the Stair String.. if you measure from the surface of the step (the wood), the height you mark, will vary, depending on where on that step, you measure from. Just draw a section of a set of steps, stairs, now draw a line, from the nosing of each step, to the next.. That's the pitch line. Now draw a line up from the going of the step at the bottom, up 900mm and now to the same from another random position on the going of the top step,, draw a line between the two.. now unless you went from the same exact position on each step and each step is exactly the same dimensions as al the others, your line will not be the same pitch as the pitch line you drew earlier Basically measure from the floor, to the top of the stair string, which has the PITCH of the stairs, measure how far that mark is from the top of the stair string. DEDUCT that from the height you want...and now measure from the bottom of the stair string, up to the bas of you lowest brackets first hole.. Then measure that same height from the top end of the stair string, where it is still at the pitch of the stairs. You now have a pitch line, that is the correct pitch NOTES 1) That fact that you mention the building regulations, is a good thing and very important, but the fact that you obviously didn't read them fully, means you need to redo this video or at least, add a correction to the end, explaining how you measure the height of the handrail correctly. Read 1.34 on www.specifiedby.com/building-regulations/approved-document-k-protection-falling-collision-impact 2) I also am not a professional and I do very little DIY myself. I am an architectural 3D visual artist. I model interiors and exteriors of many types of buildings and as a part of that, building regulations are a very important part of getting things right, especially when it comes to things like stair cases, something I have had to model, more times than I care to mention
@DanielJohnHowTo6 жыл бұрын
thanks for your detailed comment and the time you took to write it all, I'll look into this and add something to the video

Andrew is correct. In Daniel's video the height of the handrail would be less than 900mm and would not meet Building Regulations.
@JohnnyMotel994 жыл бұрын
