I thank you so very much. I am a caregiver for an elderly man who can no longer climb his stairs from the bottom floor to the level floor and this was perfect for me to be able to install the rails for him to go up and down the stairs. I could not afford to hire someone to do such . You are awesome 😎👍 Thank you.. You are an answer to my prayers and I pray that you and your family have nothing less than an abundance of blessings in your life forever and ever in the name of Jesus☝️ Amen🙌

Nice Job Hunter, In doing woodwork and carpentry as you know we use chalk lines a lot, and for sure they can stain our work, so in a case where the surface is finished or bleed-through is possible and I don't want it stained, but still when I prefer to use my chalk line any way I use 2-inch masking tape stretching it where ever I need to pop the chalk line, then I'm able to use my chalk line anyway without staining the area that should not have chalk marks or stains, because the chalk goes on the masking tape instead of the wall, etc. when I'm done the masking tape is easily removed. I now use masking tape on many projects instead of marking directly on my work-pieces. Again Thanks for taking the time to help others.

Thank you for the demonstration and tips! My 1970's handrail was much smaller, so I added an inch to mark at 32". It ended up being on the high side of the 38" code range. Next time, I will stick to your recommended 31" mark.

I’ve used baby powder as a chalk line or white, very easy to clean up. I also never glue the returns to the wall, I’ve removed many of these for furniture to be carried up and down the stairs. Great video though, precise and to the point.

Nicely done, Hunter! One additional tip... I make sure my stock handrail ends are trimmed to 90 degrees and then mark and make both of my 1 1/2" clearance 45-degree miter cuts on each end, and just swap them to complete the mitered joints - (there is less maneuvering of the stock on the saw and essentially zero waste).

Thank you so much for your demonstration of installing a handrail. I have regular handrails with spindles, but as a senior (75-yr-old woman) I wanted to also replace the handrails on the walls that had been removed by painters several years ago. They did a good job of patching the holes so I needed to determine how high they should go. I searched other videos and magazine articles on the subject, but they usually involved two guys, a level, a carpenter's square and . Using your example (31" up from the bottom stair nosing and 31" up from the top stair nosing), I attached the handrails in less than 30 minutes. They are mounted to studs and with three brackets on each, they are sturdy as can be. This will make the stairs much safer for me for years to come.

I just want to say I love the content. I can see the quality in your work. I've been doing finish carpentry for about 15 years now. Another tip for getting the ends tight to the wall is loosing the screws in the wall just a touch before you attach screws into the bottom of the rail. Once that is done tighten the screws in the wall. It will suck it in alot tighter.

Nice Job - Very Helpful - My first two story home and I was a bit anxious to do the handrail to code. But you made it crystal clear!!! One thing - if it is warped you could suggest they use a piece of 2x4 as they are 1.5 inches wide to ensure when getting the warp out its still 1.5" from wall. Again WELL DONE

Nice job. But as a builder I’ve noticed my painters like to remove the handrail to stain and finish it rather than trying to work around it up on the wall. Maybe it wouldn’t be a good idea for me to liquid nails it to the wall

Thanks so much for this video. Thorough, to the point, with a mind to code and best practices. My friend's handrail just bit the dust, and having seen your video I realize it was doomed from the start. No returns, no liquid nails, and just two wall mount brackets holding the whole rail! So the handrail staying in place was entirely dependent on 4 screws managing the stress. It was bound to come off sooner or later, I just wish it didn't happen to my friend because we now need to fix it (landlord is not gonna do this right). Glad there are a few inches window for the height of the handrail, so I don't have to try and secure the screws in the exact area where they were already yanked out. Gonna ask my friend about cutting some returns, hopefully he'll go for it so we can leave the handrail sturdier than we found it. Thanks again!

Just wanted to say thank you for doing this video. I'm new to woodworking and general DIY projects around the house and the way you taught the process was fantastic. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your expertise. I finished my railing and just need to stain/finish it. For those in the same boat as me (aka. inexperienced), I have a few cautions. Be careful with the glue and nail gun with the returns. Hunter makes it look super easy (because he's good) but for someone with little experience, it can be tricky. For instance, my returns didn't fit perfect so I fumbled around with them causing me to have some issues getting a clean insertion with the nail gun. Even if not perfect, I wouldn't worry too much as sanding corrected the mistakes. The other issue I had was actually drilling the damn screws into the wall for the mounts. I did not drill a pilot hole at first and only got the screw about halfway in. After drilling pilots and using a little wax (the screws were a little bigger than most), it went in without any trouble. Anyways, just wanted to share some experiences for those giving this a try. Keep up the good work Hunter. You're really helping a lot of people with what you do!

I am super happy I was able to help you finish your railing! I totally understand the cautions you introduced, nailing the returns together can be very tricky, I should have explained a little better how I was holding and securing those pieces before I shoot the first nail! Great mention of just using some sand paper to help the end result! I totally get you on screwing into the wall and into the handrail! The brackets I use sometimes have real crappy screws that strip or break, but 1 thing I need to note for ya is that I'm using an "Impact Driver" drill so it really helps with not having to pre-drill those holes...not sure what drill you were using. Once again with the wax idea! Awesome call! I hope many people read your comment when watching this video, just a couple more great tips to help others along the way! I really appreciate the time and effort you took into leaving this comment! Gives me the motivation to continue the path I am on right now! I think you did a terrific job explaining the process for installing the hand rail to code. You did overlook the spacing of the brackets. For code do I need to plan spacing a specific amount of 48” more or less?
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 7 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! There isn’t a code for bracket spacing, the inspector just checks for rigidity. Depending on the spacing of your framing (studs) it will either be 16” on center or 24” on center. I would recommend every other stud if possible. Most of the time the bracket spacing isn’t symmetrical. Just try and get the brackets as close to the ends of your rail while still screwing into a stud. Hope this helps and have a blessed day 😎

This was straight to the point and very informative, the only thing I did not like was the return into the wall was not clear if it was into a wall stud or not also should you pre drill before the screws or not.
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! The returns to the wall are most likely not going to end up on a stud…in this video I was NOT able to get the ends nailed to the stud that’s why I have to glue and nail the ends to pass inspection. This handrail was made from hemlock which is much softer than most other woods. If it was oak I would have predrilled for the screws into the handrail. Using an impact drill driver I do not predrill to secure the brackets to the wall, the screws don’t usually break or strip from the 2x4 stud. Try and get the brackets as close to ends for support. Let me know if this answers your question! Have a blessed day 😎

The mounting to the wall is paramount, and done much better with a 1x6 running the length of the staircase, using that to attach your railing brackets to! That will allow you to add more brackets and space them in a even spacing, as well as preventing the railing brackets from pushing into the drywall!
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 2 жыл бұрын
Completely understand and agree that a 1x6 will add support. I’ve never seen that done before. Just keep in mind that you are now shrinking the staircase by 3/4”, but that may not matter on a wide run of stairs. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

In my scenario there isn't a stud at either end of the hand rail. Is the liquid nail, and some 18g nails in the drywall adequate to support +/- 14 inches from the last bracket to the end of the rail? Thanks for the video, you're a great teacher, fun to watch.
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 10 ай бұрын
Yes a bracket that is +/- 14 inches from the end will still have plenty of support! You are not required to glue and nail the ends, I am required for the home inspection. If you see yourself possibly removing the handrail in the future for some reason and don’t want drywall repair then I recommend not gluing and nailing to the wall, just add additional brackets in the middle for more support. You can still glue and nail the ends if your are concerned! Hope this helps and thank you for watching! Have a blessed day 😎

I have removed handrails to move furniture up or down the stairway. The gluing to the wall would cause the drywall surface paper to rip off (and thus a drywall repair). It does give a Nice look though.

I completely understand! I have to glue and nail the ends to the wall for the house inspection since it is a new home…I should have mentioned in the video that it could be an option to secure ends to the wall…thank you for your time and comment! Have a blessed day 😎

Simple and to the point. I learned a few lessons though. The first, the string needs to be pulled tight before chalking or securing string. Otherwise there will be just enough droop to cause the middle bracket to be low enough so that the bottom part will be too far away from the bottom of the rail to make adequate contact. Second, when doing a reinstall (I had taken mine down to make room for moving furniture), it’s probably better to use new small screws for the bottom of the bracket. Mine were the originals (2004) and were twisted and broke off while halfway into the rail. 😡

Thank you for your time and commenting here in the channel! Sorry if I didn’t make it super clear on the string trick, but glad you figured it out for your install! Also sorry you struggled with the screws...sometimes those darn screws from 10 years ago are stronger than today, but not in your case...all in all I do sincerely hope my video helped you or gave you some confidence to get it done yourself! Any questions in the future please don’t hesitate! Have a blessed day!

I've installed handrails on painted walls. You can use baby powder in a new chalk line. You can still see the line and just wipe off with a dry cloth when done.
