i have a standing seam roof. just got a quote to have solar panels installed on the roof. they said they use clamps to install the panels to avoid drilling into the roof. how do you feel about these clamps?

Anything to keep you drilling into your roof. Drilling means caulking. Exposed caulking has a very low lifespan.

I will be putting a standing seam metal roof on my 1500 sf home. We got through Ida without any leaks on a 29 yr old 3 tab shingled roof. There are trees surrounding our property almost 360 degrees. When I saw how well metal roofs held up during the hurricane, I decided to go with a metal roof. I found a roofer out of Texas and he has told me that no ridge vents for the attic space are necessary in a standing seam metal roof. It does not sound correct to me so I want to ask other professionals what they recommend. Does a standing seam metal roof need ridge vents or can the metal roof be installed without them? And what about moisture in the attic space? I have a hip roof and a couple valleys from a 6 foot offset in the house.
@greylynnjr2 жыл бұрын
No need
@WheretheJones2 жыл бұрын
Attics have to have ventilation regardless of roofing system. It's all about equalizing the attic temp to as close to outside temps as possible to avoid over heating or condensation issues from a disparity of temp. But if you don't have eve vents (intake) then a ridge vent (exhaust) is worthless. Another solution would be gable vents if you have gables. You can even put powered blowers in them. - Owner of a roofing co for 20 years

Really nice roofing job Bro! We had a 29g roof installed recently and it’s a mess. If I knew then what I knew now I would have probably installed it myself. FYI, I would highly recommend anyone looking for a metal roof to atleast step up to 26g steel. Also, keep close eyes on your contractor throughout this particular project. Ensure they do not over tighten the screws and damage the paneling. Check the valley seams, they should overlap 6” minimum. As for the vent/chimney flashing make darn sure they’re placing the upgradient end under the metal sheeting to help prevent water from infiltrating beneath the flashing. In short, manyyy experienced roofers and suppliers have told us they do not recommend metal roofing. It’s HIGH maintenance due to the material quality, expanding of materials, likelihood of wind blowing rain backup and under seams. If a Roofer won’t send you a professionally written estimate with their letterhead, followed by a written warranty, many references for roofs they’ve installed several years prior than do not waste your money on them. We now have to remove our brand new roofing due to liars that believe they can roof but truly don’t have the skill level to cut the material properly, lay out the panels, know the best way to seal seams, etc. Pay 1/3rd cost and get the lifetime warranty shingles that also covers 25yrs of labor and be done.

As a career sheet metal guy, I do A+ work. The customer gets a great roof if the roofers care about their work period. The sales side is full of bull-shitters and fancy letterheads. As well groomed a video as this is, it's basic stuff. The Hispanic looking guy behind him whom you will never meet will decide if you picked the wrong company or right company.

There was an informative and excellent discussion about harnesses and safety at the beginning (including OSHA’s 6’ rule) but as I watched the video, most everyone was disconnected from their ropes, even the narrator while on the roof in the red shirt. I see it all the time. Ropes get in the way, tangled, workers feel safe if they can walk the pitch and slowed down by hooking in, then they just stop connecting unless it’s being enforced or always role modeled. Then, someone falls and everything changes for about 6 months until the accident feels distant. The roofing tips were good though. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Best wishes.

First thing I noticed as well - the missing connected safety equipment. I think that is why the conversation about safety was inserted at the beginning of this video. The problem for me is as a brand new beginner student, I find I started tuning out because what was said about safety was not being followed so I will look for a different video to learn from. I appreciate the time and effort for this video. I hope your crew will start being safe. I'd hate for someone to be killed at my house or business for lack of safety.

Interesting stuff. Out of curiosity how much were materials on this job (per square)?
@DigitalRoofingInnovations4 жыл бұрын
Chris, great question. We don't really use a per square price on projects like this just because metal roofing comes in panels instead of bundles. If I had to guess, you would be paying around $400 "per square". If you are still doing "per square" on commercial projects, I would recommend changing that to doing this: Cost of Labor + Cost of Materials + Mobilization Costs + Equipment + Extras = $$$$$$ When you get this number, let's say it's $100,000, you then put in the profit margin you would like to make. On this project, let's assume you want to make 30% profit. $100,000 / 0.7 = $142,857. It's important to DIVIDE and not multiply. I hope this answers your question!
@dawsonpurkett7709 Жыл бұрын
Am i high or is 142,xxx a 42% profit on 100,000? If you wanted to make 30% on 100,000, you would multiply by 1.3… because 0.3 x 100,000 is 30,000. To make your original amount plus 30% on top you need to multiply by 1.3…..

Just curious about two things: I see you screwed those top screws down tight. No need to allow for expansion/contraction? “Oil canning”? Also- does the ice and water need to be “high temp” for metal roofing? Great vid, ty.
@matthewkerrigan90482 жыл бұрын
Top screws would be the only ones that don’t matter. Then panel expands down from that point to starter… also the expansion coefficient is minimal at panels that size

isn't 9/12 a slope not a pitch?
@DigitalRoofingInnovations3 жыл бұрын
Andy, great question! In roofing, the terms slope and pitch are used basically interchangeably. In the actual definition, there is a difference, but in the field, the terms are the same. If you would like a more detailed video which covers this, please check out this video of the different methods to get the slope (pitch) of your roof and why it’s important: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5Obnnysg6yVnbM
@monicaviloria79153 жыл бұрын
I agree with both, a bit. 9/12 is referring to slope, not pitch. Slope is rise over run. Pitch is rise over span, like a 1\3. They are often used interchangeably and it annoys me. If I'm talking to a professional and they use them interchangeably they loose respect. They are different and a professional should not use them the same.
@bus-fun-addict2 жыл бұрын
Whats the differnce between run and span? If we are talking about terminology, the word span would normally refer to the distance between 2 bearing points such as wall plates or beams. Span is not really a term used in describing a cut of the pitch or slope which can be used interchangably.
@JUMBOpin2 жыл бұрын
@@bus-fun-addict run is always going to be 1' of run and span is the distance between outside walls perpendicular to the ridge. So a 4/12 slope is for every 1' you run towards the ridge, it rises 4".

Check the manufacturers install details again. As an independent consultant i am coming across these videos all the time. Transition details and ridge closure details are not per the smacna requirements, not the manufacturer, nor any approved 20 yr weathertight warranty requirements(drag load screws are missing). Another roof that would fail in destructive testing and cause a loss in litigation. The quality of the video was actually pretty good, just the information was not presented accurately. I do alot of mcelroy factory training for this panel as well as 3 inch trap. The devil is in the details.
