How-To Install a Start Collar - The Duct Shop

In this video we show you how to install a start collar into a piece of ductwork. Lock the tab of the start collar in until you hear it click in. Then bend out two tabs, leave the next three straight and continue this all the way around the collar. Once you've done this, slide the collar into the hole, it should rest above the ductwork on the tabs bent out. Bend the straight tabs to the inside of the ductwork and secure the collar with at least four screws into the tabs on top of the duct. Seal off the collar with duct sealer.

self-tapping sheet metal screws, aka "zip" screws.

That is exactly what I thought while watching this video because that is how I have done it in the past (with heat-activated tape and a squeegee before applying mastic). He did a great job and made some good points, though.

Your using cheap garbage metal products . I suggest using good quality fittings to start with. A better starting collar has a good bead so there is no need to bend any tabs out , before you install the collar . Also screws not needed . Many will do this when they cut the hole to large , which is why your using a crap load of duct sealer . Using a spin collar is better as well as a flange collar with self stick adhesive .
