How to Install a Team Associated 3 gear transmission. (Gen5Vehicles)

What would you use a 3 gear transmission for compared to a 4 gear? I'm looking at running my sc5m on carpet and I don't know which one to use.

Do they sell that 3 gear as a kit or do you just buy the case and take a gear out of the old one? Ive been out of the hobby for 20 years. just getting back into it. Thanks for any info.
