Great video, and very clearly detailed! I successfully replaced an older 80amp charger (that would not work with CyberTruck) with the universal, which is great. Now, I want to add a second Universal, but it would be sharing the same 100amp breaker which it can load share with. However, not sure how this would work... deciding on DYI or getting it done professionally. Hmmmm lol.

I'm not a pro.... so don't take this as real advise. I think these Tesla chargers need to be on a 60 amp circuit no mater what... even if 2 are in use. They can communicate with each other from what I understand for a dual set up. Like I said... I haven't done this one take it with a massive grain of salt. Getting a professional may be ideal.
@MarkChandlerSeattleАй бұрын
I followed your instructions almost to the letter - ordering everything on your list. The wall I had to core through was over 5" thick so I couldn't do it in one go. The center drill bit also kept detaching, but eventually everything worked and I was able to get a nice hole for the conduit. I used the same Hammer Drill instead of a impact drill for the anchors and it worked great. I did add washers and o-rings to all the anchors and the conduit so that it would hopefully form a seal. I also put silicone around the wall connector/charger like you did to help with the seal as well. Question: Why did you leave the conduit fitting attached to the wall connector/charger plate and then glue it by pressing the connector plate against the wall instead of gluing the conduit fitting to the PVC pipe and sticking it through the wall and wall connector/charger plate and then put the locking washer and bushing? Thanks for creating such a fantastic how to video. Every aspect of the install was new to me so it was extremely helpful.

I upgraded my breaker from 40A to 60A, but my Tesla LR AWD stills only charges at 32A. I know it's capable of going up to 48A. Do I need to configure my Tesla Charger to let it know I have upgraded the circuit?
@redbeardengineered26 күн бұрын
Firstly I'm not an electrician so don't trust anything I say on the topic.... Did you upgrade your wires as well? If you just swapped the breaker and kept your wiring the same this is pretty dangerous assuming the wiring was designed for your 40A circuit.
@chrisz778126 күн бұрын
@@redbeardengineered The wiring is up to Canada code for a 60 amp breaker (6 gauge 3 wire cable). The electrician installed a 40 amp because he didn't want to move around other breaker to make room. I called him back and he swapped out the breaker for 60A. Then he left...I assumed he should have modified my settings in the Tesla charger.

I’m trying to remove the Tesla wall connector from the wall as I’ve sold my car, but I’m struggling with it. Could you let me know which screwdriver you used to unscrew the top and bottom of the wall connector? I am stuck at the first step of taking off the wall face of the charger. I have an Ikea screwdriver set but non seems the fit the screws. Thanks!

Man good question; if I remember right the wall charger came with a "special" bit for those screws. Although I could just be a 4mm hex... not sure... Page 19 of the manual shows the hex bit was included in the kit - digitalassets.tesla.com/tesla-contents/image/upload/gen-3-wall-connector-installation-manual.pdf If you've misplaced it you can order the Wall Connector Fastener Kit here - shop.tesla.com/product/wall-connector-fastener-kit

5:37 Isn't it important to the have L1 use the same wire as the top of the breaker and the L2 to the bottom of the breaker? IOW, the dual pole breaker has a set ordering does it not?
@redbeardengineered4 ай бұрын
I'm not an electrician, but from what I’ve learned, the orientation of L1 and L2 on a dual pole breaker doesn't generally matter. In a 240V system, both L1 and L2 are live wires, each carrying 120V, and together they provide the 240V needed for certain appliances. The critical point is that both lines are properly connected to ensure the breaker functions correctly and safely. The specific order (L1 on top or bottom) typically doesn't impact the operation of the breaker or the device it powers.

So u used #6 on 60 amp breaker ?
@redbeardengineered2 ай бұрын
Based on my non-professional research I went with a 60 amp breaker and #6 AWG THWN-2 stranded copper wire.
@yrreb13Ай бұрын
@@redbeardengineered can i ask why #6 if thwn-2 and why #4 if its romex? thanks...
@TampaBayMonkeyАй бұрын
@@yrreb13 THHN has a higher heat capacity than romex (NM) so it can carry more amps. The max heat capacity for #6 romex is 60c and 55 amps. #6 THHN is rated at 75 amps with a 90c rating. #6 romex will not carry the necessary amps for for a 48 amp wall charger. You can get around this by lowering the capacity of the charger with the app, but it is a fire hazard if someone else increases the capacity. Your local inspector will probably also ding you since you are not matching the wire capacity with the charger capacity. Search for NEC table 310.15(b)(16) for a listing of different ratings for different cable types. HTH
@jjb874018 күн бұрын
Romex is a sheathed cable if 2 or more wires so it doesn’t have as high an amperage rating as a single strand of wire (THHN) in this case has.

It doesn't appear so. I did silicone around it a little, but I don't know if that was necessary. It's rained a ton since install and I haven't had issues. With that said, it may be best to refer to the manual. I haven't looked in there for verification.

Great video and ALMOST all is done correctly. Happy to see the torque screw driver used per instruction for the wall connector and the breaker and be sure to wiggle the wire a couple times and re-torque after each wiggle for movement. You can always go back and torque again after a few months one more time. FIRST MISTAKE, you didn't use washers with sealing gaskets on the tapcons since an outside installation - see page 23 first NOTE. The kit comes with two wood screws and two gasket washers. I also used 3 tapcons on my installation since an uneven stucco exterior wall so it would be more flush without warping the wall plate and simply ordered some gasket washers. SECOND MISTAKE, you are to use a weather tight conduit fitting at the wall plate, that is one with a gasket (rubber O ring) to keep water out. I also caulked the back of the wall plate before installing then a bead of caulk around the wall plate being careful not to use too much so as to not prevent the faceplate from fitting all the way on. NOTE: there is a tiny weep hole in the bottom of the wall connector in case water does get in or humidity causes condensation. In my installation, no way water will get in. I live in South Florida so tropical storms with driving rain is a concern so that is why I was so diligent with the water tight instructions for the outside installation...plus of course electricity is involved. Lastly, some people have used 6 for ground too as for some reason the wall connector can be finicky using 10. I just used one roll of black 6 THHN and marked one wire with red tape and one wire with green tape to distinguish the wires. My run was under 30 feet so 6 was sufficient for the 60 amp breaker and 48 amp continuous load (per ampacity requirements) . Best wishes.

50 amp calls for 6 Gauge and 60 amp calls for 4 gauge. Why did you use a 10 AWG wire on a 60 amp breaker?
@redbeardengineered4 ай бұрын
From my research 6 AWG THWN-2 leads with a 10 AWG THWN-2 ground is sufficient for a 65 amp circuit (at 75F which is the temp used for NEC guidelines) . You may be confusing THWN-2 with 6awg romex which is only good for ~55amps from what I can tell. Note I'm not an electrician and I recommend everyone doing their own research.
