How to Install a Wi-Fi 7 Card in your PC (MSI Herald-BE on an AMD system)

I finally managed to get a Qualcomm-based Wi-Fi 7 adapter and these are the steps that you need to take if you want to install one in your PC (either AMD or Intel).

My dell is 2018 and only accepts a m.2 pci A+E and will not support the new BE200 chip as it needs to have the extra loop in the chip. I found that my wifi 6e chip doesnt seem very capable from afar on my WIFI 6 modem only giving me 330 mbps of 500. I will try this setup to see if i can get closer to the full 500+ speed i am supposed to be. I am testing my computer speed from about 25 feet away but I know that the wifi 7 chip should work better even on a WIFI 6 modem/router as I have personally tested this theory of mine to be true in my laptop. The BE 200 wifi 7 chipped worked better than the WIFI 6E chip even though on a Wifi 6 network from cox and 500 mbps internet. From up close I was getting around 430 mbps on the 6e but on the 7e it was as close as it can get to being hard wired. I was getting 530 mbps. I believe my 500 mbps internet from cox they say 500 but its really more like 520 to 560 I believe. From afar however it does drop about in half. And thats with me having installed an additional internal antenna. But i am still impressed because this is vastly improved over the wifi 5 chip that came in it only giving me about 40 from afar and 80 up close. The wifi 6e wasnt that much slower from afar by about 30 to 40 mbps but up close it was about 90mbps slower in my test results. These test results are not entirely entirely reliable though but it is enough for me to confirm that the WIFI 7 chip works better on a wifi 6 modem without any doubt. I wont likely be getting a wifi7 modem or faster than 500mbs internet in the near future as it is too out of touch price wise and i just dont need it. I figure it will probably be at least 2 years before this happens. I'm just looking to maximize what im paying monthly for in the meantime and hopefully by the time WIFI 7 is in full bore I will be already ready for it.

They kind of did, yes, especially with the latest scandal with the Intel CPUs which will most likely push more people towards alternatives.

I’ve troubleshooted so much with this adapter. I have an MSI x570 Gaming Plus MB (AM4) with Windows 11. The drivers are installed. I’ve tried both my PCI slots just like you installed yours. I ran the cable for the Bluetooth as well. Windows recognizes the device as being installed, both the WiFi and the Bluetooth. Bluetooth is working great. The WiFi connects to my wireless router but it will not connect to my actual internet, it just says secured, no connection. Then gives me a gateway error, what’s crazy is that it worked for like 4 minutes pushing 900 MB/s (I run a gig plan) and then just stopped working. I gotta call MSI today, their support was closed during the weekend.

The only thing that can help (I hope) is to re-install the drivers. I checked out their page and MSI seems to have released a device and assume that their done with it considering that the latest update is from 2023..

Will this wifi 7 adapter work if the router only supports wifi 6 and below? I only plan on upgrading my router several months from now.

Yes, it is backwards-compatible, so it should work with WiFi 6 and 5 without problems.

I've installed this and the wifi is working, but bluetooth won't pop up on my control panel and it says my pc can't connect to bluetooth in settings. I've tried chatting with MSI support, nothing yet. All my wifi drivers are installed, but the bluetooth drivers aren't able to be installed for me, and I don't have a CD drive to manually install the drivers that come with the MSI HERALD-BE. I've updated my pc, tried everything and nothing seems to work. For context, my custom build is running an MSI MPG b550 Gaming Plus, an MSI RTX 4060TI, G.Skill Trident Z RAM 32GB, an AMD RYZEN 7 5800x, a Samsung 980 PRO, and a Seagate Barricuda 1TB, All running on Windows 11 (If that even matters, just trying to state any info that might be of use) If anyone has been able to fix this problem, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This has happened to me initially as well. I am going to blame Windows because its support for WiFi 7 is weird and the updates released in barely beta stage. In my case, it simply worked out of the blue after updating the Windows version and a few reboots. You could try installing the 24h2 beta update as well, just be careful that it can mess things up even more - in my case, it didn't.

didnt that card need a 4x socket?, there is also the matter that a graphics card slot that has 16 (16x) lanes revert to 8 lanes because of occupying a 4x (1x) slot (shared), same is true with NvmE SSD's, the one next to the CPU could get slower when you put another NvmE SSD into another slot

Where did you get the info that the MSI adapter requires a 4x PCie socket?

@@SamBondor i read that somewhere, but only if you dont have a 1x slot, a 1x slot is fine, but if you have to use a 4x slot it will reduce the lanes on your 16x GPU slot, that also depends on the motherboard, newer boards already solved that problem

⁠@@ronnyb5890it does not matter where you plug it in. It’s an x1 device. It will only use one lane even if you plug it into x16 slot.

I just checked and it's not out of stock. Be aware that it's only available in the US right now, but you can get it outside of it as long as you don't mind paying for the custom fees...

Sadly. Most wifi 7 adapters are not supported in windows 10😢

They should work, but in a limited fashion. The 6GHz network will only be visible on Windows 11 and Linux afaik.

@@SamBondor So what? You can change it, but if someone want to hack you they will do that no matter how you hide your mac, ip adress or something else, it,s better to put sticker on it than blur that part.

I think so. I saw some guys have managed to install an AX200 in a Flow X13 notebook, so the QCNMC865 should work as well. I can't be sure that the 6GHz network will show up though. Still, make sure that you're on Win 11 and that the drivers from MSI are installed.

yes but you need to remove wifi 6e, if its built in then you need to disable it

@@ishid_anfarded_king Exactly. And there is also the option that involves removing the small card from the PCIe adapter and replace it with the one that comes on the WiFi 7 adapter. You can see that they're usually held by a single screw and the two small antenna connectors. It's a bit more intrusive, but it does free up a PCIe slot.

Does this card work on windows 10? My computer thinks it’s an Ethernet connection and won’t use wifi

It should let you connect to the WiFi, but you're not going to see the 6GHz network. You do need Win11 or Linux to use it. Did you install the drivers and what sort of computer do you have?
