In this video, the little broski and I install some new horns on the Golf. The stock horns on the car worked, however they weren’t loud enough for our liking, so we decided to pick up a set of Hella Supertones, just like the horns I have in my Honda Accord, along with in my brother’s Mini Cooper.
Hella Twin Supertones ▶︎ amzn.to/2cuSFrv
The new Hella’s were purchased on Amazon, and installing them was fairly simple. We could have installed the new horns in the OEM location, however because they look nicer than the OEM ones, we decided to relocate them so they could be seen from the front of the car.
If you have any questions regarding the video, you know what to do. Thanks for watching!! :)

Be sure to separate those two new metal connectors you installed otherwise it will short out the circuit and blow your fuse. Staggering the new connection is a good way to keep them separate.

stop, stop, stop! You guys have to isolate the female and male connectors from touching! Now, as it is connected, they will short out. Use some electrical tape or headsrink. If they stop working, the fuse is burnt! its weird it worked at all if u ask me..

*PEOPLE FREAKING OUT* In the video, I did not show you to wrap the connectors in electrical tape, however I mentioned it would be a good idea. We did do it and separated the positive and negative connectors so they wouldn't short out. The style of connector we used would not touch, but for added measures, you can wrap them. Look at 11:19 and look at the connector on the left, how it is insulated in the electrical tape.

Cool but I think the original horns sounded better ! And it does matter if the connections of negative and positive are correctly attached. The horn speaker will pulled in if they are in the incorrect polarity not giving you a clear and proper sounding horn ..try with a speaker , you'll see it pulls the speaker in instead of outward...

I would have used a wire adapter to mate with the OEM plug. This would give you a cleaner look and the ability to go back to stock if you are selling the car. Since you went the route you did, you could have used a heat shrink tubing at the end of the mesh wire sheathing. This will keep the end of the sheathing from splaying over time. Your stock horn actually sound better. I think the PIAA sports horn would sound better that the Hellas you've used here.

@jimcooper3048
@jimcooper3048 5 жыл бұрын
actually, that is why I went looking for vids like this ... I just got a pair of the same horns and I'm thinking the relay that came with them is probably for MORE AMPS (current) than the OEM teeny horn ... but the box has almost no instructions ... a visual diagram that doesn't explain itself at all. My GUESS is that the new relay can probably just swap out whatever horn relay is in the fuse block now ... but they don't say whether the OEM fuse should be increased. Probably not point in increasing the wire size, since the horn is not often 'on' for very long, so the wires won't heat up in that short time.

Two observations: 1). The orientations of the horns will allow water and debris to enter the drivers. Normally, horns should be pointed downwards. 2) Polarity is important. If ground is connected to the positive post of the driver, the horn will “pull” instead of “push”. It will still make noise, but it won’t operate at full efficiency.

To address corrosion down the road; what I do is use heat shrink tubing and silicon. Just squeeze the silicon inside the heat shrink then as you heat the heat shrink the tubing will shrink and silicon should run out of both ends of the tubing (heat the tubing from the middle out towards the ends). Water tight seal. This will last until the horns die. Electrical tape will just not hold over time. Great video.

Why didn't you connect the factory wires directly to the horn on the left side

Seems like a really bad idea for most speaker/horn types have the front of them facing directly forward into the rain/road water. It will blow through the bumper vent and directly into the new horns. There's a reason the oem horns are mounted facing toward the back of the vehicle. This helps avoids water collecting in them which eventually will cause them to fail. Someone can correct me, maybe these aftermarket horns are waterproof or some how impervious to such damage, but this is the case for most horns.

Why didn’t you use another relay independently ? Wouldn’t that provide the loudest possible output from the horns by keeping the voltage stable
