Although not the flush valve that I am replacing, the steps on this video are well articulated. the detail instruction on how to install the beaded chain would seem obvious but with so many universal flappers flapping about with links and hooks some like me would scratch their head trying to figure this out. I bought a flush valve kit (American Standard #5) that has a beaded chain a rubber grommet and a metal clip of some kind with two hooks. I do not know yet how to make the linkage between the flush rod and the actuator valve but your video clues me a little.

You can use a 1/2 inch socket (regular size) with an extension.

@Crazyfootballguy The refill tube is to allow extra water down the sewer line itself. This helps move solids down your drain line to the main sewer, reducing the chance of a clog in your toilet lines. The water in the bowl itself is not always sufficient to do this and without the refill tube adding extra water "down the drain" as it were, you would stand a much greater chance of a nasty "traffic jam" in your home's drain line.

this was so very helpful, especially when 2 plumbers looked at it and said they had never seen a valve like the old one. I googled it and voila! the exact same toilet and everything. Buy your parts off of Amazon, you'll get them cheaper and faster. I had to go to home depot since I wanted a new gasket, if I had known I would need one, I would have ordered it from Amazon too. The parts came with the EXACT same instructions, which was fabulous as any adversity in this would have made me give up. I saved myself over $200 by doing it myself and have the satisfaction that I figured it out myself....thumbs up to the men in my life who looked dumbstruck when they looked at the toilet. ha!!@

I have the old style valve the you took out of the tank. it makes a pretty loud slam when you flush......was there a recall on the valve

this is a great video, but i have the newer flush valve and it needs to be replaced. i cant empty the tank all the way. it will only empty half way as thats where the valve goes to. can anyone explain how to empty the tank completely for me?

Also, I noticed the valve opening sits several inches higher than the original. Which means it uses less water when flushing. How much less water does it use?

You cannot buy the parts from Home Depot or Lowes. We had to get it from a plumbing supplier. We did replace the part but it took far longer than anticipated. You really need the extension part that fits on the washer to unbolt the tank. You have very little space in which to work. American Standard parts should be available from the big box stores that sell the toilets in my opinion.

My old white tower (champion 3?) is finally starting to have a problem. Do you guys make parts for that? It seems like that one is a better design than the Champion 4.

There is hope for me then. I have the style flush valve that was removed from the toilet in this video. It has completely broken on me and I can not find the replacement part anywhere, nor can i find any info on the model toilet i have. I hope i can get a replacement part and not have to replace the entire toilet.

Why do you put the refill tube inside the vent tube? The water then goes straight down the drain. You should install the refill tube on the outside of the vent tube so it can refill the tank.

No. When a toilet flushes, a large portion of the fresh water from the tank goes down the drain with the waste. The purpose of the refill tube is to ensure that the water in the bowl reaches its peak level while the tank fills with fresh water.

When installing the new flush valve, be careful not to postion the water inlet tower over the tank bolt hole, or you will not be able to get a screw driver into it.

Installed two of these in April 2019. To date, one has never been a problem with leaking and phantom flushing. The other has been a royal pain in the butt. In October of 2023, the second one started phantom flushing. First time with this problem since new. Replaced the top seal as have many people. It was silent after that for a few weeks. Now, I'm right back to where I was in October. I've read reports from other dissatisfied customers. It appears the "standard" in American Standard means standard of crappy quality. No more or your products will ever come into my home. You could have fixed this with a better material but you didn't. It probably cost your more in lost sales than replacing the dang seal with a better one. Typical.

So-o-o stupid!!! I just now discovered that American Standard DOES NOT include the gasket that goes between the tank and the bowl. BE SURE TO ORDER A NEW GASKET. Don't reused the old one. You might also order a bolt kit since the existing rubber washers are probably are deteriorating.

I'm just here to comment how these toilets are utter garbage and any and all repairs are hell on earth because of their pathetic design, numerous ridiculously-numbered part numbers, and what I think is planned obsolescence in their replacement parts; if not that, just file them under "pathetic" as well, as they're sure to fail. I inherited two of these crappers in the house I bought, and in 4 years have had nothing but trouble. This video does not cover a few things: First off, the replacement gasket isn't just some "presto" thing where you place it and it snaps both to the top and bottom. The hex shape helps it stick to the top, sure, but the bottom has to be PERFECTLY placed or you won't be able to correctly screw the top and bottom together in a way it doesn't leak everywhere. Speaking of that, the bolts/washers/nuts are hell to get back on because of the inexplicable placement that makes easy access impossible. As one commenter said, you need a socket extension: but the problem is, the extension can't help the fact that the amount you have to screw in the nuts is longer than all standard size sockets. The instructions that come with the replacement warn "DO NOT SPIN BOLTS WITH SCREWDRIVER," but otherwise it is impossible to get the tank to contact the mounting ribs unless you have a set of extra deep sockets. That means you're struggling with a screwdriver trying to tighten the bolts without stripping the bolt while also trying to ensure you're doing it evenly on both sides, also again troubled with the fact that the lower gasket has to be PERFECTLY placed for this to be ensured to work- a thing you can't guarantee because of the crappy design of the bowl's receiving end of said gasket. Besides, I've had to replace the top gaskets on these "improved" flush valves 4 times, besides this whole valve replacement once, which resulted in the detailed experience above. This doesn't even count the number of replacement handles I've had to do on these toilets, which I think is around 3-4. If this is the "American" Standard, maybe "made in China" ain't so bad.

These toilets are awful. Nothing but problems. The replacement tank to bowl gasket is too thick and now the tank rocks--no china-to-china. No way in hell I'm turning the water on. I called customer service and sat on hold for 30 minutes. The plastic horn is also cracked. How the heck does that happen? GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!
