I just did this for my 05 Jeep. I bought several crush sleeves just in case, and I learned fast that it's real easy to go over that pinion pre-load & then you get to start all over...again. Great video!

For all those attempting a gear replacement - you can buy setup bearings from several different places. These have been turned down (on a lathe) on the inside diameter so that they will slip over the pinion shaft without pressing them on. It is usually a lot easier than using a grinding stone to increase the inside diameter of the bearings. For those of you that wonder about whether there is a problem using one bearing for setting the rear end up and then using another to actually install into the rear end - Tapered roller bearings (aka Timken Bearings) have VERY tight tolerances between bearings, so it is perfectly OK to swap one with another, you can expect it to be almost exactly the same dimensionally. Also - if you haven't done any gear setup before, you should buy a number of crush sleeves with your rebuild kit, because you WILL have trouble getting the right crush the first time. You should also measure the height of the old crush sleeve before throwing it away, this will help you to get the right amount of crush on the new sleeve.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's in the dealership we used a special tool that was a long bar that fit the yoke and when turned hit the frame. We then used a very long breaker bar, and you could feel the crush sleeve crush. The we checked it with the inch pound torque wrench. Great job on everything I have seen you do. Some us cane only dream of doing the stuff you do!

@@DEBOSSGARAGE the '92 Bronco is the current one. Then making the '01 v6 F150 have stupid power then make the '06 Audi off it's face fast then stuff the 5.8 that was in the Bronco into the '75 Nova with some Chinese turbos. So I'm set with more than my skill set can handle for a long time. But that's how you learn, do stuff you don't know how to do.

You may also need to say you need a good impact gun too. Or did you say that? Had bought a old 1954 Chevy pickup and someone did some work to the rear end and the first time I drove it for a distance over 10 miles the rear end got so hot it cooked the paint off the pumpkin and sounded like bacon frying when I pulled back in the driveway. Old inclosed drive shaft. What a pain those were.

With GM cars of almost all years you can tell gear ratio by going 75 mph and looking at tachometer it will read out gear ratio as long as you have it in drive not over drive and have proper sized from factory tires. For example my 86 Monte Carlo SS has 3.73, when I go 75 mph(in D not overdrive) it reads out 3700 at 75.

A “low” gear ratio is technically a higher number like a 4.10 or 4.56. A “high” gear ratio is a lower number like 3.08 or 2.73. The higher the number the lower the final drive ratio and the lower the top speed but you can blow the tires off no problem.
