if you have trouble unplugging removing the center trim/vent piece (hazards, door lock, DTC), you can push the controls from the insides out towards you. it comes out in a cube/square shape fairly easily. this makes unplugging and reconnecting it so much easier.

@@cdb5001 if you’re referring to the black square shaped thingy, then no. You just push it from the back towards you and it slides out if I remember correctly.

How so ? Can you tell me your experience as I’m looking into different options and I’m torn which way I should go. For me it also seems that most of these new screens just seem to be rebranded cheap aliexpress ones with a big bump in price.

@@Keka-vg3utit’s just more quality sticking with OEM as much as possible. A lot of people have issues with the quality of a lot of these screens. Most of them are being made in China, and while they may look nice for a little, they break a lot

Installed one today and I tell you your video helped but man it’s very hard to tuck the new harness behind the radio. Took me like an hour to play with the wires as there is zero room.

How was you able to manage to fit all the harness in the rear of the stereo? I'm having trouble putting it back, head unit is 1/2 inch out

throw the shifter in drive to give yourself space and tuck the harnesses

I had to use a small saw to cut and fabricate the hard black plastic trim inside to help tuck those big pieces. THAT was the hardest part of the whole install.

I just answered you in a comment above. Yes, you can switch from OEM to CarPlay and back by pressing the menu button for two seconds.

This is for 2009 and above. The website has one for your year but you have to remove the screen it’s a different set up

CCC is the old system for the on board menus, CIC is newer - 2009 up. NBT is the most recent one.

If the car has Bluetooth Audio enabled from the factory, you don’t need to route the AUX to the glovebox

My sound quality got better through the aux since it added a customizable EQ. Not even the newer 2014+ cars had an EQ. If you have factory Bluetooth on your car, you can just route your audio through there. It's not like the sound quality on pre-2009 BMW was life-changing anyway.

@@TheMadcowintucson Because it’s incredibly hard to intercept the optical signal on BMWs, Mercedes, Audi, etc. it’s just the way many manufacturers design their amps and CANBUS system. As someone who has a HK system on my f80 m3, the difference was minimal and I’d never go back to not having CarPlay 😂

It’s much easier and better to install a new Android touch screen display unit. No extra “box” or “idrive controller “ connector. This product is over engineered !

The Android based touchscreen units can be lower quality depending where you buy them and cost nearly double the price. This MMI box is plug and play, retains the iDrive features as well. BimmerDirect sells full screens as well though!

@@IzzyE9X if the goal is just CarPlay then it’s very unlikely that you’re going to get lower quality. Android units are plug and play and less effort, you just need to connect harness.

For sure, just depends where/who you purchase from. If you can land a good quality Multimedia Screen, for a good price (which BimmerDirect sells), that’s a good option. For those wanting to keep their OEM fitment, build quality etc, the MMI is a good choice. The main negative I’d say aftermarket Multimedia screens will have is not as good heat resistance as to where the MMI box can be hidden in the footwell away from the sun. In all honesty, comes down to preference and price!

Newsflash: You need to connect the drive connector on android screens also. If you didn't... you installed yours incorrectly. Also most android screens are not good quality at all compared to the MMI
