Sorry but years of education and experience should be what makes you thousands. You shouldn't be doing this for a job after a 5 minute youtube video. It's a good video. Gives excellent tips, and the work is clean, but watching it doesn't make you a carpenter, and it would be irresponsible to say you can charge money for this service after watching a video. My 2 cents anyways.

It's the extra steps that make all the difference between an adequate job and an excellent job. IMO - if it pertains to your own home, things such as baseboards are probably only going to be installed once in your lifetime. So put the little extra work in. You're already there with the materials and tools. Do an excellent job and spend the rest fo your life admiring your work. Wes's advice is spot on.

Great video Wes. Love the 1/2 degree and sandpaper ideas, can't wait to put them to the test. The 366 down votes you got are baseboard installers angry that you gave away the secrets like Pen & Teller. QUESTION: I have been cutting my baseboards laying down flat on the chop saw, not standing up like you do, so I can extend my blade life by not having to cut through so much material on every cut. Is there really a difference either way for cutting baseboards? Is your method any better than the way I cut them?

Wes Hamstra nice video. I ve been using this trick for more than 10 years. My father taught me he is a finish carpenter. Instead of -+half a degree. I put my pencil behing the piece im cutting giving me -+1 degree cause the pencil is 1/4 thick. This way i keep my saw at 45. I use it everyday. Is addictive and you get better at it by time.

Sorry to be that guy, I just have a couple other tips. You can speed up the coping a bit by flipping your base upside down and setting your saw to 45 to make the backcut on the bottom where it is straight. Works perfectly unless the molding is cupped. Also instead of marking every corner and running back and forth to the saw, measure a room at a time and make a list. Cut your outside corners a fuzz short and the inside corners a little long but no more than 1/8". The cope will cover any gaps where your other cut it short and the inside corners will flex into place giving you tight joints everywhere with 1 trip to the saw.
@WesHamstra
@WesHamstra 6 жыл бұрын
XxStratAttackxX those are also great tips! I always measure a whole room and make one trip to the saw. Thanks for the extra tips and watching!

Same here. I like to make one trip, especially if there are stairs involved. I like to make three columns on my scratch paper. Left and right column tells me what the piece needs on that side of my molding. The middle column for the measurement. So my cut list will have. RT | 25 1/2” | OM. This would be a return on the left and an outside miter on the right. Abbreviations: RT for return. OM for outside miter, ST for straight cut, CP for cope cut. I also use the Starrett gauge for measuring the outside miter angle. Anything other than 45 degrees will be designated with an OM 46 for a 92” corner or OM 44 for a 88 degree. Easy for anyone on the job site to understand.

walls aren’t always straight... what do you with uneven walls?
@XxStratAttackxX
@XxStratAttackxX 6 жыл бұрын
noelleonnoelleon it shouldn't affect your joints. If you cope your inside corners they should come together nicely. And i always glue my outside corners with instant ca glue gel before nailing them. If an inside corner is really bad you can either use a wonder bar to close a gap at the bottom of the joint or shims to close up the top. Or drive a screw into the wall and make it square. Beyond that you would have to make a compound miter if your work is stain grade and you're working for a rich client but for the average residential contractor that's a huge waste of time.

Curse the framers and drywall guys. Then try and hold the base tight to the wall nailing it off into studs. Followed by hopefully good painters and it shouldn’t be an issue.

If you have your angle already cut on the piece of base or moulding then you put your saw at the opposite angle and then cut it perfectly flush with your angle cut and the piece will fit perfectly in place capping the return end of the baseboard or trim.
@stevencamp69
@stevencamp69 4 жыл бұрын
And when i say cut it flush I mean to cut it flat so that the flat side goes to the wall and the angle finishes the trim at the end.
@stevencamp69
@stevencamp69 4 жыл бұрын
And when cutting returns always take into account like a 16th or an 8th of an inch for the return piece. Glad the tips helped someone!

I use a much cheaper dewalt 10” power miter saw. I have to cut baseboard laying down as the blade won’t clear the vertical but it does the job for around $80. If not needing it too long you can also rent.

I've never done baseboard before but my neighbor has asked me for help since they are remodeling their bathroom. Baseboards are going in today and I'm a little more confident after watching this video. Now to practice a little before using the good stuff. Thanks for the fantastic tutorial.

I cant imagine actually doing inside corners with a coping saw..... I get it with crown moulding but regular base? It takes too long and time is money....

Richard Rohde practice makes perfect.. some just wanna get it done asap and make money but there's others that care about quality and clients that want quality will pay for it. To each their own

Mark Pederson to each their own.. I can cut a 44 degree inside corner that fits just as tight as your coped cut. Quality does matter but time is money and at the rate of $.20 a sq ft (floor space) I'm not coping a single piece. Coping has its place but for paint grade base it's unnecessary.

You need to learn how to charge. Do it by linear foot and not square footage. I get $300+ for small bedrooms. Then make painting it extra.
@BrandonContracting

Brian Heuer except for new homes I don't make the rates they do. There's what's known as an industry standard. If your billing out $300 for a small bedroom of baseboard, I would be making thousands a day. Nobody will pay that
