Sorry but years of education and experience should be what makes you thousands. You shouldn't be doing this for a job after a 5 minute youtube video. It's a good video. Gives excellent tips, and the work is clean, but watching it doesn't make you a carpenter, and it would be irresponsible to say you can charge money for this service after watching a video. My 2 cents anyways.

It's the extra steps that make all the difference between an adequate job and an excellent job. IMO - if it pertains to your own home, things such as baseboards are probably only going to be installed once in your lifetime. So put the little extra work in. Great video Wes. Love the 1/2 degree and sandpaper ideas, can't wait to put them to the test. QUESTION: I have been cutting my baseboards laying down flat on the chop saw, not standing up like you do, so I can extend my blade life by not having to cut through so much material on every cut. Is there really a difference either way for cutting baseboards? Is your method any better than the way I cut them?

@XxStratAttackxX6 жыл бұрын
Sorry to be that guy, I just have a couple other tips. You can speed up the coping a bit by flipping your base upside down and setting your saw to 45 to make the backcut on the bottom where it is straight. Works perfectly unless the molding is cupped. Also instead of marking every corner and running back and forth to the saw, measure a room at a time and make a list. Cut your outside corners a fuzz short and the inside corners a little long but no more than 1/8". The cope will cover any gaps where your other cut it short and the inside corners will flex into place giving you tight joints everywhere with 1 trip to the saw.
@WesHamstra6 жыл бұрын
XxStratAttackxX those are also great tips! I always measure a whole room and make one trip to the saw. Thanks for the extra tips and watching!
@OmarGarcia-bi7jq5 жыл бұрын
XxStratAttackxX yeah you are that guy , but you are right you can speed up doing that 👍
@stevemcwilliams86805 жыл бұрын
Same here. I like to make one trip, especially if there are stairs involved. I like to make three columns on my scratch paper. Left and right column tells me what the piece needs on that side of my molding. The middle column for the measurement. So my cut list will have. RT | 25 1/2” | OM. This would be a return on the left and an outside miter on the right. Abbreviations: RT for return. OM for outside miter, ST for straight cut, CP for cope cut. I also use the Starrett gauge for measuring the outside miter angle. Anything other than 45 degrees will be designated with an OM 46 for a 92” corner or OM 44 for a 88 degree. Easy for anyone on the job site to understand.

walls aren’t always straight... what do you with uneven walls?
@XxStratAttackxX6 жыл бұрын
noelleonnoelleon it shouldn't affect your joints. If you cope your inside corners they should come together nicely. And i always glue my outside corners with instant ca glue gel before nailing them. If an inside corner is really bad you can either use a wonder bar to close a gap at the bottom of the joint or shims to close up the top. Or drive a screw into the wall and make it square. Beyond that you would have to make a compound miter if your work is stain grade and you're working for a rich client but for the average residential contractor that's a huge waste of time.

If you have your angle already cut on the piece of base or moulding then you put your saw at the opposite angle and then cut it perfectly flush with your angle cut and the piece will fit perfectly in place capping the return end of the baseboard or trim.

And when i say cut it flush I mean to cut it flat so that the flat side goes to the wall and the angle finishes the trim at the end.
