What about moisture from the concrete? Do the strips absorb them possibly causing mold down the road?
@victorjbarker5 ай бұрын
Yes this will likely mold to some extent. the carpet and padding may have enough vapor transfer to keep it dry for the most part. But there is also not very much R-Value in the carpet and padding in the northern cold belt

I have a question. I’m in a condo with shiplaps. Above the shiplaps were 5/8ths fiber board. I’m removing those boards and fixing up the shiplap by removing the nails so no more squeaks and replacing with screws. I’m thinking that I shouldn’t replace the 5/8 board with 5/8ths plywood. Instead I should put a thinner plywood and then pour self leveling concrete all over the condo. I still want to install concrete in most areas, but think the self leveling concrete option over straight plywood replacement would add better resale value to the place. Do you agree?

The smooth side of the padding is the vapor barrier, right? Why does that go face up and not face down? I understand why you would normally put that face up to protect from spills. In basement I thought it would probably go face down to protect from the concrete sweating. Or does concrete not sweat or anything like that?

How far do you put the tack strips from wall ..and do you have to have a power stretcher
@andrewrice47473 жыл бұрын
Smoothedge does not typically go down in to concrete that easy. Maybe explain more how the nails can break apart the concrete very easily depending on the concrete and if the nails are being hammered straight. To me nailing concrete smoothedge and metals can be a very frustrating part of the job. I have never seen a new helper be able to properly secure concrete smoothedge to the floor. I would at least mention that they should reinforce the smoothedge using construction adhesive if the they are diy projects and get an extra bag of concrete nails. Other wise great videos at least your putting it out there 👍

Yup, I had to install tack strip onto my concrete subfloor after having to remove it due to a small flooding issue and it was a total NO GO. The concrete would just bust up under nails when trying to hammer it in. Maybe the concrete in that basement is new so it goes in easier. My house is 15+ years old so the concrete is pretty hard. I found a video where they are using square aluminum drives in 1/8" holes drilled with a hammer drill. I am hoping that works for me.

Hey! We got our professionally installed and our carpet is very easily lifted from those strip tacks that you talk about. They have been back once to "stretch it out" but it still comes up with the lightest of pulls. Normal? Basement, over concrete as well.

recommend restretching onto tack strip and pushing or rubbing onto the spikes thoroughly
@stevehamman4465 Жыл бұрын
Are you still under warranty? If its coming loose its because it's not stretched properly! The tension of the stretch should hold the backing taught to the pins in the tack strip! They should use a , power stretcher, and two runs of tack strip! Good luck! Oh,, think of the carpet as a bungee cord and its stretched and hooks to the pins in the tack strip.

Gary The Gringo You can stretch carpet good with just a kicker you just need to let your nuts hang and toughen up
@GaryTheGringo3 жыл бұрын
Blah Blahh good dose not mean properly. Yes you can kick in carpet and get it tight but that comes at a price. That price is, stressing the carpet from the jarring motion of the kicker and the toll it will take on your body. Such as hip, back and neck problems also can cause vision problems by detaching your retinas from the repeated jarring. Oh and let’s not forget the obvious knee problems. While you let your nuts hang and toughen up I will work smarter and be able to enjoy life with a healthy body when I decide to retire.

@joemcginnis62394 жыл бұрын
@@bigt3718 using a kicker to stretch carpet can make it look installed, but will not hold up very long. All carpet must be power stretched according to CFI and according to the carpet manufacturers. Many, in fact most, installers in my area (Philadelphia) use a kicker to stretch in carpet, and they get by. But it is not a correct installation and it will wrinkle sooner than later.

When installing carpet on concrete, you should always use a vapor barrier or else mold will start to grow and you'll have a nice musty smell to your carpet. When installing carpet in a basement, you should go one step farther and use a dimpled vapor barrier.
@GaryTheGringo4 жыл бұрын
Chicken2057 this is false. Carpet does not require a vapor barrier. If you put a vapor barrier down it will trap moister and create mold. Carpet is a breathable materiel which will let the moisture though and evaporate.
@vlsr713 жыл бұрын
@@GaryTheGringo But then when uou put something on top of the carpet why does it become wet when you take that object off the carpet. MOISTURE BARRIER IS IMPORTANT.
@GaryTheGringo3 жыл бұрын
@@vlsr71 moisture barriers are not important for carpet unless you want to stop spills from soaking in to the pad. Let’s take your statement that the carpet was wet when you moved something and dry where there wasn’t anything sitting on it. That means that the rest of the area was able to breath and get rid of the moisture. If you put a vapor barrier over everything and trapped all that moister under the pad. The whole floor would be soaked. Tell how that vapor barrier is working for you then? One more point about the vapor barrier pad that is a total sham. You will poke hundreds and hundreds of holes in it when you stretch it in and your power stretchers teeth go threw the carpet as it grabs it to stretch it. So once again please tell me how it is important for carpet?
@vlsr713 жыл бұрын
You are breathing in all that vapor coming from the wet concrete slab. Do you think that is healthy? Isn't it better to have a ceiling to that porous concrete slab? The ceiling is the moisture barrier.
@GaryTheGringo3 жыл бұрын
@@vlsr71 breathing in that moisture will not harm you, mold will. Having a house with a properly working HVAC system is capable of removing excess moisture in the house with in reason. So what you are trying to imply is that if the concrete does not have a vapor barrier on it then you are breathing in unsafe moisture? So please explain to me why the millions of people living in houses with unfinished basements are not getting sick. If you are laying a laminate floor or a floating hardwood floor on a slab then it is 💯 required to put a vapor barrier down. But even then it does not get rid of the moisture. It just redirects it to the outside perimeter of the floor. It still goes in to the house. It just has to take a slight detour.

Where is the power stretcher? If the carpet is not properly stretched there is a high degree of probability that there will be problems with the carpet loosening over time creating "waves" or "wrinkles". A knee kicker alone is not sufficient to stretch the carpet Pad cement should be used under the padding/cushion to secure the pad to the concrete subfloor. On a wood subfloor the pad should be securely stapled using a hammer stapler. This prevents the pad from moving or shifting especially during installation.
