I found this video very helpful…4.5 minutes of good by-the-book work followed by 4.5 minutes of questioning and over analyzing 1/32 of an inch… I think we might be related!? When I get stuck in this thought pattern I remember that when these things were built in the factory they were on an assembly line where things were done quickly. They must have some degree of variance and those covers after so many years of heat cycles must not be perfect. Thanks for the video I liked seeing it this way from a down to earth guy who works like I do in my garage!

good video, did you end up putting a new seal in? looks okay to me
@CTSCAPER3 жыл бұрын
I went with what I had. I couldn't find anything wrong either besides being about 1/16 to 1/32 off and I think that's "within acceptible tolerances." I'm somewhat embarassed by how I drove that seal and I know I could do better the second time. I left the footage in so people new to the sport know that it doesn't always go perfectly.

Love your attention to details ! Noticed that way back in the chainsaw videos .

Thanks Bruce. I look at it as a positive rather than a negative at this stage in life though most people have told me differently. I can't turn it off so why not embrace it and make the best of it! Thanks for watching.

is the plastic sleeve supposed to pop out once you pop the cover on ? nobody shows anything past the install and this install is done a zillion ways
@CTSCAPER5 ай бұрын
The sleeve SHOULD stay on when you put the cover on. It acts as a guide and a spacer around the crankshaft. If you click on the video below you can see me remove the sleeve after starting to tighten the bolts around the timing cover. In hindsight, I should have left the sleeve in place until I torqued all the bolts on the timing cover. It hasn't made a difference; there have been no leaks since doing this job. I removed the sleeve because I thought it might get stuck on the crankshaft. You can see how easily it came off so no concern there. @@CTSCAPER im looking at the factory seal right now and it never dripped a drop of oil ever the plastic sleeve that came off is about 3-4 times longer than what came out so im thinking it never had one on it either cause it would have been on here if it did

Maybe the timing cover isn't perfect and the seals position is

I like the way you think! I've gone 600 miles and still dry and hopefully it will stay that way.

No leaks yet! Hoping it stays that way. The truck has been running a lot cooler since I changed out the oily radiator as well.

Put your in your install tool and do it and wack it again.

Putting all that goo on the seal was pointless. They are not designed to use any sealer around the outside. That stuff can get in the sealing surface and ruin the seal prematurely.

square it up or it will leak

Damn, you do way to much over thinking it!! It's in just fine, button the thing up and run it!!
