Thanks so much!! I searched for 2 days for exactly this collar and plenum that I have to reattach to my mobile home from underneath. Cats knocked down old one.

same thing happened to me- cats clawed 100’s of tiny holes which allowed condensation in the flex duct ultimately ending in sagging and colapse

You put 181 up rated tape on the interior flex line then a zip tie on that. Then you mastic the take off like he did pull the insulation up tight to the trunk line tape and another zip tie on the out side. I have been fail for not having a zip tie and tape on inner liner and on the outside. Probably depends on what state and local codes. Good video though

No insulation on interior of plenum? The one at the house I live in goes to the attic and has thin insulation around the walls. In a house I recently bought, the plenum is basically just a 20”x30” filter where the flour furnace used to be, and I hate to see them done that way. Looks like you only get use of a round place in the middle of the filter. I intend to install a regular plenum in the hallway where a closet is on the other side of the wall. I think it has 3 1/2 ton system as it has the same size filter mine does here at my house which I think is a 3 or 3 1/2 ton system. The one I intend to install at the other house will be attached to ducting in the crawl space and will not be near as tall as the one here going into the attic. Does it need any kind of insulated walls and top?

How will the ring stop the collar from falling into it if you didnt bend any on the other side of the box? Or screw through some tabs?

@@heidis8713 If the cut is tight enough, that bead acts as the stop. If you're sloppy with it, then you have a problem. That's when you have to try and bend them from both sides and it's a bitch.

WHAT IS THE PROPER NAME FOR THE FLEX DUCT AND WHERE CAN I GET IT, HAVE BEEN TRYING WITH DRIER FLEX EXHAUST AND THAT STUFF IS FLIMSEY
@johnnywu2
@johnnywu2 5 жыл бұрын
What he's using is called insulated flexible duct. They sell it at home Depot up to a certain size. The inner part is still pretty flimsy tbh.
@heidis8713
@heidis8713 3 жыл бұрын
What are you using it for? Because drier duct usually comes as a 4" round, and have no insulation. That would really only be good for driers and bathroom exhaust. My concern is that a 4" would be undersized for most applications, as well as the insulation issue. Home improvement stores carry flex duct (usually 25ft per box), but also try Offerup. Lots of people do projects where they only need a portion, and you can buy the remaining length for a very big discount.

I've seen it with the zip tie inside and duct tape on the outside. Which one is correct or better?
@name777
@name777 2 жыл бұрын
The advantage of tape on the outside insulation (instead of zip tie) is that it doesn't compress the insulation. Using a zip tie will greatly reduce the R value at that connection point. I'd tape and zip tie the inner flex duct.

You can connect two flex ties together, end to end, to make them longer.

You basically converted the R6 insulation at the collar into R0 by mashing it down like that
@mcm8369
@mcm8369 3 жыл бұрын
Only for that one inch length. A physical fastener is required by code. Totally correct way to do it
@rdmd
@rdmd 3 жыл бұрын
@@mcm8369 Actually not, the inner jacket is secured w/ the zip tie, then mastic'd, then the outer jacket is slid over, taped and mastic'd, resulting in no insulation loss, no condensation, and no subsequent mold that causes a health hazard due to defect in workmanship that creates a liability. This is the industry standard in humid climates such as south Houston, as mold related issues from this, and other practices have resulted in over a billion dollars in losses for new home builders.

Heidi S, once I went to the plumbing supply shop I found that they sell far better duct takeoffs than shown here. They have “stick on” ones that has an inch wide flange with dual stick tape on it. I cut the hole in the duct with shears and it was SIMPLE, my first time.
@heidis8713
@heidis8713 6 жыл бұрын
Damn, I have to check that out. The duct couldn't have been too sturdy though, huh? Did u use tin snips or regular scissors?
@nickb6651
@nickb6651 6 жыл бұрын
Heidi S Cheap $8 tin snips... It was easy to mark the circle with a sharpie, then cut it with the tin snips, no problems at all.... the whole job is easy... connecting the flexible tubing is really easy to, make sure you buy the right straps (kind of like 4 foot long zip ties). Make sure your secure the inner surface first, then on a roll and secure the outer surface. Do you want to make sure there’s no way to get insulation blowing into the dock. Like I said, it was my first time, and it was it’s really really simple job. As long as you stay away from Home Depot parts.

Nick, oh okay. You said "shears" and I thought regular scissors. Lol Had me nervous for a minute. I agree... I dont care for Home Depot for HVAC stuff. I went there a few months ago, and they sold the 10" metal ducts, but didn't sell 10" dampers for it. Lowe's isn't any better. They don't have anything in stock, and they are sooo expensive. I found a plumbing store online just now that has a store close to me. Thanks for mentioning that... they seem to have better prices than Home Depot and Lowes. I'm gonna check it out today :)

If you are going to use stock-audio fake applause, you should go all the way and pick a tens-of-thousands of spectators in stadium rock concert with an A-list rock band coming on stage, or better yet at the end, roaring chants of “encore! encore!”. (I am not insulting; I am serious because the comedy effect would be over-the-top hilarious. You would get viewers just for the full-throated/no-holds-barred comedic effect alone.)
