Excellent video. I just removed my gas tank, and it went mostly like this - except longer, and everything was way more rusty. My locking ring was half gone, so removing wasn't a problem. Probably why it's been leaking, and maybe the cause of my misfiring issues. Glad the metal tabs on the tank seem to be ok - a bit rusty, though. Maybe I should epoxy it when I re-install with the new ring, don't know. Unfortunately, my truck kicked off when I had half a tankful of gas, so I'm stuck with a bit in the tank still. I poured out as much as I could, and thought about washing it out like in the video, but will probably just reinstall as is. Just ordered a pump - wish I'd done it ahead of time, but wanted to see how this went first, before paying for a new pump.

I did it like you. Pump works fine but the fuel level doesn't work well. After filling the tank (30$). The level stay empty. what's wrong? After filling full. The indicator says about 3/4.

Two factors you must live in warm climate cuz it doesn't happen up north number two it's easier to pull the bed off

Can you replace it by removing the bed of the truck? Would it be easier as a home repair?

I have an 04 crew cab and removing the bed won't help. The sending unit is under the cab...

I have an 05 Colorado with the standard cab and removing the bed works fine. I think the only drawback I faced was not being able to easily clean out the interior of the gas tank. It would’ve been nice to turn it upside down and empty it of gasoline, as well as maneuver it around while cleaning. I never drained my tank down as was done here. TBH, I may just go ahead and drop the tank anyways because I didn’t properly seat my fuel pump as he pointed out in this video (I watched another video which shows the truck bed removal method for fuel pump replacement) and it won’t fully pressurize the fuel rail enough to actually start my truck. So, I decided to lift the bed up again and sure enough, I can see the green o-ring that should be concealed below the fuel pump flange and lock ring (for that matter). The pumps are also spring-loaded (somewhat) and when I push down on the crown of mine, it moves which lets me know that it isn’t sealing properly. And after watching THIS video here, I now know why. I didn’t match up the tank groove with the pump tab. It’s why I haven’t been able to start my truck yet either. I’m just so relieved to learn of this proper seating that I missed the first go around otherwise I’m not sure what else I would’ve replaced trying to diagnose the fuel pressure problem. Truthfully, I have myself to thank for revisiting my fuel pump installation which revealed my previous errors. Anyways, HTHs

@@donsal.t.1765 I am a woman, and jimmied mine up by myself. Of course, I had a couple 10ft metal posts (center of gravity), multiple 4”x4”x4ft wood pieces, a floor jack, and that was about it. It wasn’t easy though.

I replaced the pump two days ago and today the engine wont start like it's not getting fuel. What could that be sounds like the pump is working.

Sounds like you may not have seated the pump properly as he stated in this video with the tank groove to the tab on the bottom side of the pump flange. This is my second go around with this replacement because I didn’t seat mine properly initially and my truck wouldn’t start up, just crank. The fuel pump couldn’t pressurize the rail properly because there wasn’t a securely sealed install. So, I’m doing it again. Might be your problem too. Or it could be that you may have (if this even applies) incorrectly wired a new harness for your new pump. One of the topside harnesses wouldn’t work with the new pump, of course the new harness was included with the new pump BUT, the wires on the new harness were the same colors as the wires that connected the current (old) harness. Obviously, I assumed it was intentional for ease of pairing/splicing in the new harness. Not So!! Anyways, this reply has probably found you a couple years too late, but it may help someone else perusing for answers.

@@donsal.t.1765 My wife and I did it. Was pretty heavy but doable. The hardest part was lifting it high enough to get over the back bumper and wheels. We removed both plastic wheel well liners/splash guards which made it a little easier. Had to lift a few inches less high that way. Also ended up scraping the paint on the back corners of the bed on the bumper pulling it out.

Strongfp because even if you remove the bed the fuel pump is underneath the vehicle cabin and you still need to lower the tank
