Couple of things. . . You probably won't get little spots of adhesive on the face side of the fabric if you don't check for tackiness and then use the same gloves to smooth the fabric onto the headliner. Also, I think I'd have gone ahead and folded over the entire 2" or so of extra fabric and trimmed the excess edge after gluing it to the back of the headliner plastic. Probably doesn't matter, but I'd personally feel more confident doing it that way. The way you did it, I foresee a risk of cutting closer to the headliner than I'd want to and ending up with an uneven back edge. I'm impressed with the quality ethic, though! I always pay as much attention to the details that nobody else will see as the ones everybody will see and I appreciate it when other people demonstrate that attention to detail. Nicely done.

I just ripped off the old headliner fabric. Left the old backing up. Took the new piece that has foam backing and just used a staple gun to put it up :) I sprayed the staples first with a color close to the fabric color and NO ONE has ever noticed the staples and it looks clean and nice. It''s an older caravan and not my main car, so who really cares.

The flat headliners are fairly easy. The curved ones are a bit more difficult. Especially if they have that crappy foam glued to them. I remember the first time I went into a fabric store to buy material, the old ladies gave me the stink eye until I fully explained what I was going to do. Guys didn't go to fabric stores back then. I took my wife with me every time after that. Not a problem these days.
@jcuvier1358 жыл бұрын
Agreed. A curved headliner requires a pretty stout adhesive. Otherwise, you end up with something more like a drum head stretched across the ceiling.

The best way I have found to do these is to fold the fabric over to completely cover the other half, then spray glue over the both exposed surfaces completely, and you will not run out of glue and have to reapply. Eliminates any need for paper to cover the "face" side.

Hey when your starting to apply the head liner fabric on to the base you can also use a small paint roller that is like 5 inches wide and you can reach under the fabric and push it like that instead of using your hand that could put a wrinkle in the head liner fabric.
@chrisj20047 жыл бұрын
He could have also used the empty cardboard roll the headliner came on under the folded section after he sprayed the adhesive. Then just rolled the roll forward. It would have made it easier than running from side to side of the table.
@1998gst46116 жыл бұрын
In his case he could use some type of roller to push the material out on the glue but not all cars have flat headliners like he's doing which is easy to work on. Most modern cars these days have headliners that have valleys with high and low spots especially where it meets up to the dome light openings and coat hanger openings and also around the sides of the headliner where they come up to an angle not flat. Also most newer cars use foam back material with the fabric bonded to it, what kevin tetz is using for material is a flat piece of fabric with no foam on it.

I'm not sure what is in the Eastwood Pre-paint and Prep, but be very careful when putting acetone on ABS because acetone will dissolve ABS. If you have a textured dashboard that is ABS and clean it with acetone, you will no longer have a textured dashboard, but just a dashboard.

Is one can of spray adhesive enough to complete a headliner install?
@barrykelly27225 жыл бұрын
Okay so I have installed about 6 headliners successfully. However I recently botched a job due to the deep recesses in the fiberboard frame. So I have a new headliner that needs to be removed so I can attempt a second install. Any hints on the process?
@martyloveless1969 Жыл бұрын
Did you ever get that new headliner removed? I have the same issue, the spray adhesive did not adhere well to the recessed areas. I used " 3M 77". Need something stronger. Thanks
@barrykelly2722 Жыл бұрын
@martyloveless1969 Marty, I did complete the headliner but it has yet to be installed. The rear portion of the headliner was the issue. It has some steep cavities and that is where I started on round 2. The normal process is the smooth portion first followed by the more challenging areas but that failed. I had to grab another can of that 3M headliner spray and more fabric but it's good now.

A J roller, or even a broom handle can make working with contact adhesives and fabrics much easier. Even using some sort of caul and a deadblow hammer and a caul/sacrifical surface, to compress surfaces together helps a ton. Cause most contact adhesives work by bonding to themselves. Not so much the specific materials your using.
@shuvang4 жыл бұрын
Just did my first attempt and it is way harder than it looks. Go extremely slow and find some good adhesive and watch the video a couple of times. Just used autozone headliner adhesive and it did a poor job. I let it sit for like a few minutes and it didn’t even stick most of the new headliner.

One BIG thing that really bothers me about this whole video (and this is only one of them) is that he keeps pressing, rolling or spraying glue out of the can with his hands and not cleaning them off or getting new gloves before touching the shown surface. Right after applying the glue he goes and touches a shown faux SUEDE material. I don't know if you guys have ever worked with that stuff but glue sticks to it like shit on velcro and will not, WILL NOT come off. Even if he's not using that material, you shouldn't spray glue out of a can and then go and touch the shown side. That's just a recipe for restart. I've seen Kevin do some nice work, but this has to be one of the worst explanations on how to do it

@hoffmanshaven3 жыл бұрын
If you are covering the plastic then just sand the crap out of it with 180 then clean with mineral spirits or paint thinner. I don't like using acetone on plastic but you can if you don't get aggressive. Once the plastic is clean just apply adhesive and cover. The only other thing you can do is refinish the plastic but I've never done that before. I have always just cleaned it and covered it or painted it. I would like to try this refinish product he has to see how good it works.
