If you are installing tile over subfloors and not concrete i would run a string line from both sides of the room to the centre instead of a laser that you can accidentally move out of position and leave it a quarter inch above the tiles and sloghtly pull it up when you are mudding the floor without losing the chalkline It works wonders for me always Just tie the line to nails on each end of the room and it stays there until you are done installation

I actually thought i was the only tiler that got a bit messy when fixing. Glad it's not only me! I was taught by a master fixer 35 years ago, he could come to work in a suit, tile all day long and still go home spotless. Don't know how he managed to work so clean all of the time. Amazing really.

@@tilerman I was the same way when I started, I learned to be disgusted with anything on my hands so I always had a water bucket next to me. It helps a lot to work cleaner. I’m personally don’t have a problem with getting my hands dirty but when it comes to stuff that is really hard to clean up like thin set I change my mind to hate having anything on my hands

Looks great! I started a few weeks ago and layed out more than half of the floor in the living room. Took a measurement and realized it was off from the corners of the tile to the wall by 5 inches. Made no sense how that happend especially when I layed the floor out dry and it wasn't that bad. Made the decision to tear it all up and throw away 3 to 4 hundred bucks to start over. I just layed the first tile and im hoping for better luck this time. I heard I needed the least a 3/16 grout line. Is that what your using?

Once you get the hang of the initial pattern the rest of its gravy. I like cutting in herringbone patterns. I find a ruler better than a tape measure for corner cuts. Or of course making a template. Its also the only patterns I will literally starts in the middle and work out

Thank you, we’d still get the center point of the room and possibly do a dry layout of a few rows to see what it would look like. Stating in the center is a good place to begin

Thanks for the video. I am still confused it you ran a new chalkline based on the offsets you measured, or you are just using the original centerline chalk marks that you made. Can yo clarify this?

A center line matters only when yo have a rectangle room, but If there is more to the bathrooms then 4 straight walls, I would go for where you want that peak to point. The center of the tile is the center of the tile. I always start at the furthest corner and work my way out the door.

I’m guessing the wire layout is for the under tile radiant heat. Once that’s on and the tile is warm, will that heat the room to a 65 degrees in January or February?

Heated flooring won't heat the whole room, but it does help.

What if my room is not a perfect square? Where do I start at midline?
@jamess58727 ай бұрын
Couple of years late but wouldn't it just be easier to make a mark on the half point 12" side. Draw a 45 up from there, line it up with the center of the room mark and boom there's the perfect center pf the herringbone.

The tile looks great. I think I learned something, but I had to watch it twice. The frequent reselection of word choices and use of the word "center" made it harder to follow what you were doing. I think that is why I saw a comment where the woman decided it was too hard to do. Even though you emphasized the importance of orienting the first tile correctly, I think the explanation of that portion was rushed. If you get the chance to do another one of these, I recommend showing the measurement process more clearly and also avoid talking about two distinct steps or processes using the same verbiage back to back.
@richardpercefull7083 Жыл бұрын
This guy goes through a lot of explanation to say that all you need to do is draw an X off one end of the tile and center the X in the room. Done!

Why wouldn’t you “make” the center of the pattern line up with the points of the tile? You measured and marked “true center” that didn’t line up with the tile points. Just trying to understand. I’m a rookie don’t want to make rookie mistakes. Thanks for the tutorial!
@angelartistic30564 жыл бұрын
Same question he lost me with that extra measurement that was not the true center.
@danbiss874 жыл бұрын
Because the point of the tile isn't the center of the pattern. So in this case he found center of room and center of pattern then measured from center of pattern to the point which is where he put his lasers as the points provide a more accurate reference point for tile layout
@ericschrock84933 жыл бұрын
To piggyback on what Dan said, you're centering the pattern which doesn't match the center of the room. I did this myself and with true center of the room, my pattern was a few inches off. His technique works :)
