How many kerdi showers have you installed? Have you had any issues? I just finished one and passed fllod test, just wondering if I should apply a liquid membrane over pan for extra precaution

I doubt the kerdi membrane would ever give up. As long as you taped corners and edges correctly, you will never have to worry. Stick to schluter instructions, this video is not doing the right thing

I never understand how all these dudes in videos manage not to get any grout/ caulk ect. all over themselves. Must be editing magic. Quick question: why did you choose the band instead of doing an overlap?

Yea, I’m not the the ‘cleanest’ when I work haha And I went with the band because I think it’s a bit thinner than the membrane and helps prevent thicker “lumps” under the tile. BUT in hindsight, I think overlapping by 2” would have been fine - and WAY easier. Good luck with your project!

I noticed you taped and "mudded" (thinset?) the cement board before putting on the Kerdi Membrane. I saw another video where they didn't do that but instead just put the membrane over the cement board as is. Is there a right way and wrong way here? It seems to make sense to fill the seams of the cement board before putting on the membrane.

Great JOB! ONLY video I can find that is using Durock. So am I. Question? Did you tape your Durock joints with mesh? Looks like it but I can't tell. Also called Schulter and they said Durock is fine to use. But suggested I use the smooth side because the rough side , even with thinset may puncture the liner with all the sharp fiber edges.

I see you've mudded the cement board seams with something? What was that? And is it really necessary? I have seen a lot of installs without these cement boards seemed isn't that what the membrane is supposed to do, is stop water? Please explain why you did that and if you think it's 100% necessary.. also is it okay to install the shower pan first?

Thanks for the video. I’ve gutted an existing shower that was probably tiled in the 90s or earlier. What I’ve found is that the tile was set directly onto a dry mortar bed, there is a waterproofing membrane beneath the mortar bed rather than on top. The shower is a step down shower. I’ve dinged up the mortar bed pretty badly while removing the tile, but I don’t want to remove the old shower pan completely because it is quite hard. Could I just use this system directly on top of it after making the old pan level first? Also, was the kerdi band that you used 4 mil thick? It seems there are multiple options for thickness on Amazon and I want to make sure I get the right one.

They come "PreSlopped". I never have done this before and did not think I could do a mud shower pan that is why I bought this Kerdi shower pan because it is already pre-slopped.

Question for ya, fixing a customors tile shower. Previous contractor left a gap between and floor, home owner thinks it was the schluter system so she wants cement board down.... can i still use to schluter drain set up or shut i cut the drain and re do that too?

Just wondering on the water test. I tested my pan and around the drain flange membrane aver the coarse of 24 hrs it grew darker and the darkness moved towards the drain like maybe water was seeping under the membrane. Have you seen this before? Thanks

Hmm, I have not seen that. But I agree that it doesn't sound too good. Did you identify what the issue was? And where the leak was stemming from?

Thinset is an adhesive. But reality is that thinset hardens and will form channels even with 100% coverage. However it is in line with Shluter's US warranty guidelines - and how it is most frequently installed. German standards require waterproofing on the seams, specifically Kerdi Koll (not sold in the US). It is best practice to use any ANSI A118.10 waterproofing liquid membrane on any seam that adhered using thinset alone.

The manufacturer's video shows you can install Kerdi membrane right over the regular gypsum drywall. Doesn't using the Kerdi membrane make the need for cement board unnecessary (and vice-versa)? Would drywall (cheaper and easier) with Kerdi membrane not work just as well for waterproofing?

One advantage about cement board I can think of is it's more rigid than drywall, so it probably won't be crooked or wavy if you just screw them into the studs straight up (probably?). Drywall will be crooked unless you shim the studs. But I'd say Kerdi foam board is just easier to work with and much lighter than drywall, so if one needs to shim or wet shim the substrates, might as well use kerdi board.

Question about the floor drain: would it be ok to construct the drain pan offset or should it be Centered? I ask as I’d like to put the shower where the toilet is and use that hole and relocate the toilet. Thank you.

I off set mine. But remember the pan is already pre-sloped so you should be ok unless you don't have enough of the pan to cover the area. I called Kerdi direct with my questions. They pick right up and answer all technical questions. They told we that you should use the smooth side of the hardy backer because the rough side might puncture the kerdi membrane and you will have a leak. Something to think about.

Covering the wall is critical for steam rooms. For standard shower, people only waterproof the bottom 12". Schluter will tell you to cover the whole wall to be on the safe side and to make u buy more, but I do think it's an over kill. I did cover the whole thing just for piece of mind knowing I overdid it.

Hey is there a difference of installing the Kerdi to cement board vs a water/mold resistant drywall? Did you install the shower tray directly on the osb subfloor or did it have underlayment plywood over the osb?

You can install it over anything, most commonly they are fastened to studs 16" on center. Most would consider over cement board a waste of materials, but it is a more moisture resistant shower wall.
