What's the difference now between this semi annual thing and the 365 days? Are these two different kind of updates or will windows wait for half a year and then another full year to actually update features? So in the end bloat features will be updated/installed either way, just with a delay? But great video! Best out there I have seen so far

They've hidden DeferFeatureUpdates and DeferQualityUpdates under WindowsUpdate\UpdatePolicy\PolicyState now as well as BranchReadinessLevel although it's set differently

I just noticed they've moved some of the options with the latest windows 10 updates. I think I just set BranchReadinessLevel as the same as suggested in the video from memory. It was just in a different initial state from the video.

You can’t really disable feature installs. Microsoft makes it exceptionally hard. Machines often revert back to default registry settings after a reboot, essentially wasting your work. We’ve basically lost control of our machines at this point.

It's because what the uploader is conspicuously silent about is the fact that the setting there isn't actually giving the option of 'disabling' the update in reality. Selecting disabled there actually means disable the OPTION OF CHOOSING how frequently the junk gets installed. If you enable it, you get to choose a deferral time, with a maximum deferal time of 365 days. If you disable it you get the junk installed with no choice over the delay ( I haven't checked what that default delay is) . Yeah, I know what you're thinking - the title says only install security updates and the video actually shows you how to do pretty much the opposite, right?Yeah. Naive viewers will follow the instructions step-by-step, listening to all the chat about 'bloat' and thinking they've only enabled security updates, not realizing he's just lead them into setting up an update time bomb and one day theyre gonna log on and find MS has installed a bunch of shit and their config is FUBAR. Sneaky move, huh?

And after each Windows upgrade, so at least once a year, you have to repeat these steps. Because Win 10 likes to "forget" the settings made by the user during an upgrade and resets them to default.

Hey Chris, one thing I picked up being a Jr. Sysadmin was going into GPEdit and "configure automatic updates" - as far as I understand it this enables me to choose (assuming I have the correct setting) when to update. This is a very black white situation, but if I apply the same methods here and subsequently choose that option, will it still only download security updates? I like to choose when my updates install for resource reasons.

hey cris got arch linux running as main os and using dual boot win10 for games that dont run on linux yet. my win10 can't even update itself. it downloads the patch and im getting this error on install: "2020-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4551762) - Error 0x800f081f" any idea how to fix this? tanks in advance

Patch tuesday is normally the second tuesday of every month. In europe those updates usually appear on wednesday. I prefer having updates disabled, and when i listen to some moanings, some not now, i know there are updates available and i do them when the time is right. One more sign that windows downloaded updates and needs to reboot, outlook stops sending e mails for some reason. Mails get stuck in outbox

Can you please do a UEFI install of Ubuntu, I tried installing Zorin os 15 but it wouldn’t install due to grub2 and it’s efi partition. I tried manually partitioning the disk for grub2 but it didn’t work. I suspect this is going to be a bigger problem soon because intel cpus are only going to allow UEFI soon. Make sure your EFI partition uses FAT filesystem. Grub will install a shim bootloader there that will load the the real grub bootloader from /boot, which should not be in that EFI partition, but in a more traditional Linux partition, like ext2/3/4. The chain of sequence when booting in UEFI system is this: EFI bootloader (this is part of your motherboard) -> the Grub shim bootloader (in the EFI FAT partition) -> real grub (in /boot which should be in ext2/3/4) -> the Linux kernel -> the init system -> your graphical desktop environment.

I just did this for my OpenSIM server. I'd rather run a headless Linux box for it, but apparently there is limited support for Linux and its impossible to migrate an OpenSIM server from Windows to Linux.

I dont miss PopOS. Its pretty much the same feeling. But damn...Manjaro Gnome is so bloated -.- I like the minimal Version more.
