Great Video! Thank you for making this video. I had a contractor install new kitchen cabinets and part of the new cabinets were over a part of the kitchen that didnt have cabinets previously. They did not move the register and placed one of the cabinets directly over it. He refused to come back to move the register and I can't afford to pay an hvac company to do it. U helped me quite a bit. I inherited my parents old house and it had been remodeled over 20.yrs ago and the duct boot in the bathroom is rusted and coming apart, so hopefully all I have to do is replace the boot

Early in this video you mentioned that you didn't think it would be common that people would want to relocate a floor vent. But actually in my own life that has happened a couple of times. - First time, in a home when the only logical place for a large piece of furniture was right over a vent, and we didn't want to lose the airflow. - most recently, in a different home, a floor vent was oddly located right next to a toilet. In fact you almost have to step on the vent while using the commode. (My guess is that it had to do with a remodel many years previously, when one bathroom may have been split into two). But the fact remains that it is an extremely odd and very impractical location for a floor vent. I would like to simply extend the duct a couple of feet and relocate the vent accordingly, which would solve the problem. And your video shows how this could be done. Thank you!

So I have the same issue. My master bedroom is awfully small, and it really only makes sense to have the bed in one spot, and dresser across from the bed. Unfortunately the dresser covers the floor register. It makes much more sense for it to be off to the side of the room where nothing would ever be on the floor. I know I want to relocate the register for sure, but I'm not sure how to go about replacing the subfloor where the old register is. When I move out, I don't want there to be a hole in the subfloor once we move the dresser out obviously. Any tips? ​@@vinnythehandyman

@Striker617 If you have carpet it’s easy. Pull back carpet and pad. Use a circular saw and cut. The finish cut should end splitting the joist so you can nail again. Once your done use liquid nail so the board doesn’t squeak. I do it all the time to move plumbing in bathrooms.

But my biggest project would be to re-route the air vents on the ceiling to the floors......

Congratulations on your new move. Tennessee is beautiful! You will definitely have your work cut out on that house. Do one vent at a time to to see how far you want to take the upgrade vs ripping everything out at once. You never know if you want to continue. Best of luck and thinks for watching.

Cool guy I like you, but a bit shotty on the duct install. They make crimping tools for turning a female end into a male end where you don't have to cut pettals out to flare it down. Don't most hvac guys use these? also that was a pretty bad connection and tape job there at the end with the last two conections... Otherwise, nice vid. Simple stuff. I would have used duct seal on all the joints then maybe tape over that.

Assuming the supply plenum didn't already have a take-off in the new joist bay, you should have installed a new take-off on the plenum (and remove/seal off the old one) and did a straight shot to the new register outlet. Every elbow increases the TEL (total effective length) you've potentially compromised the original duct design/performance. Also, Malco makes crimping tools so you don't look like a hack. Finally, that aluminum HVAC tape needs to be tooled into place with a squeegee tool upon application. And lets not overlook the huge splinter in the hardwood floor that you caused with the spade bit that extended out beyond the register cover. I'm not sure I'd be proud of any of this workmanship.

Yes, just depends how big room is. Typically bedrooms rooms get a 6”.

Are you supposed to tape the vent to the sides of the new cut hole to create a better seal before dropping that register in there? Nice video tho, I’m sure if I try this I’ll F it up somehow! Thanks for posting this!

Hi Foster! Thanks for watching and posting your thoughts. Honestly the more tape the better. Home Depot also sells grey duct sealer that you can apply as well. The Grey sealer is most common and I forgot to mention in video. Good luck on your install!

hi I just moved in new place and there are metal covers under floor registers, are these so that thing dont fall in the vents? OR what other reason are they there? I can provide a picture.

Hi it sounds like straps supporting metal ducts. If it’s a 1” thick strap and screws to framing than those are for support. You can remove and install the back same way. You can email pic under my profile.

If it’s a slab on grade then there won’t be floor registers. They will be in ceiling.

You could use the same tools. When it comes to carpet take a utility knife with a sharp razor blade and cut the square need it out then cut sub floor. Take a drill bit to mark center of hole then use the floor register as a template and cut out carpet.

why in the world would you be so incredibly short sighted as to cut off the end with the crimps on it only to put them back on? Cut off the other end!!! Leave the factory crimps on. Really? Next if your going to take down all the duct anyway move it over so that its a straight shot down the joist. Everytime you put a turn in a line of anykind you loose flow.
