To prevent debris getting onto your work if left for a prolonged period of time. You can lay a big enough tarp over it, it also works if there is rain just may sure your run off direction of the tarp goes to a spot where it leads away from the base/ends of the wall.

I see you take the time to answer most comments, thank you for that. I plan on doing a similar project and want to use ¾ inch porcelain tile set on gravel and stone dust. I live in Québec and the ground freezes hard down to 48 inches in the winter. I saw that many comments from older "experienced" people are very negative of this type of installation, they prefer a mortar bed and some sort of adhesive cement, for my part I don't think this can stand freeze/thaw cycles very well. What is your opinion on this? Do you experience very cold weather in your area?

When shooting slope with the laser you should shoot in line with the laser axis especially at that close of a distance. Otherwise you lessen the degree of slope the further you're out of line.
