Hi. Nice instructional video. How do you feel about people who advocate for square holes for fruit trees? You mentioned aphids n spider mites but you didn't mention how you would treat them. Maybe later in your videos? Peace to you and yours
@gardenguychannel4 жыл бұрын
Hello Kiki. The reasoning behind the square holes is so that the roots do not grow around and around. This issue arrises in highly compacted soils. If you manage your soil correctly the soil should become looser and looser. You can scarify the sides of the soil to help with the root penetration.

I have a friend with some large property. I have thought about thorny raspberry bushes mix in with honeysuckle bushes. They will intertwine and make an impenetrable barrier that offers fruit and flowers for pollinators while offering the privacy of a fence the defense of barbed wire and the beauty of colorful flowers and fruit backdrop along the edge of the property. Crazy theory or would it actually work?
@gardenguychannel4 жыл бұрын
Hey great question. I like the idea but I'm thinking the honeysuckle may be a bit too dominant to not overwhelm the raspberry. Any time I've had honeysuckle growing in my berry bushes it overwhems them and shades them out. If you're going for a barbed barrier you'd want to go for blackberries because they are more sturdy than raspberries. Although the raspberries could do the trick if you planted them thick enough. Hope this helps! If you want to try out a vine in the hedge I'd go with something with a small leaf that won't overwhelm the berry bushes.

@gardenguychannel Жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm not too familiar with your neck of the woods. But I would defiantly select for eventual height. Emerald Green arborvitae will get that tall eventually but they'll take a while to get there. Green giants will get there much faster but they'll get much taller than 10 ft. I'd consult your local nursery supplier.

My dad has a huge maple tree in central MN. It has had landscape fabric and rock around it but it has been removed. Because dirt started to mound around the tree and rocks were rolling into the yard. Growing up in Colorado, never saw a Dogwood tree. Now in eastern PA. Is it the soil difference why no dogwood’s out west? And should dogwoods be planted alone or kind of close?
@gardenguychannel4 жыл бұрын
Hey great question! Yes the dogwoods are native to the eastern regions of the US so they are genetically adapted to out here. I't more of a climate difference than soil but I would say soil is a factor. Dogwood trees prefer to have partial to full sun. Be sure to plant them high out of the soil as they really breathe through their root collar. They do better separate than close together. Please let me know if you'd like any more info on dogwoods as I have planted many.
@suebooa47834 жыл бұрын
Gardenguy Thank you! Going to plant 2 next spring in daughter’s yard. I have always noticed the ones that do well are in partial shade. That being said, afternoon shade the best? Using your advice to determine the arc of sunlight on the property. And I had no idea about planting root ball high. Still mulch over top of it, right? Thank you for responding!
@gardenguychannel4 жыл бұрын
@@suebooa4783 Yes you can definitely still do mulch just make sure the root collar is a good 1-2 inches above grade. I'd plant the dogwood high enough that you can create a slight grade/slope up to the tree. So like a mound around the tree. That way you know drainage is going to be good. Dogwoods can handle most sunlight conditions but if you plant in an area with eastern sunlight that might help resist fungal or bacterial blights because the plant would get dried off early in the day from that morning sun. Glad to help! Blessings.

Hello Destiny, yes you should be good on the soaker hose. As long as you have ample drainage and the soaker hose isn't close to the trunk of the tree (I'd give it a good 2 feet or so). Be sure to give the trees periods of dryness. That way they will not be so dependent on the irrigation. And the grass clippings are a great idea!

Hi Nancy! Not deep at all. Emerald Green Arborvitae have a more fibrous root system. Most likely about 2 feet max. you should not have to worry about the roots causing damage to your wall. Be sure to plant far enough away from the wall that the foliage does not get restricted. Wherever they don't get light the foliage will thin out. Good luck!
