Found broken boot from service mast on ground today after a strong wind storm last night. Mast is probably 25+ years old so the boot likely met its life expectancy. Was looking for options to replace the boot without disconnecting mast head and wiring and this looks like the ideal product for the job. Thank you for sharing!

I am facing a new roof and was wondering what I could get to replace the old weatherhead service boot without having power company disconnect my service. You answered it and even showed how it is replaced. Thank You Sir!!

I noticed a rust colored stain in a small area on the ceiling. The house was a little more than 10 yr old, so I never considered that a roof boot had been compromised ............. but that was the problem. I'm a lazy homeowner. Your videos help me learn the things that I need to look for. Thanks!

I used a product that covers the existing boot and all. I can't remember the name, but it's supposed to last as long as you own your building. I had it re-roofed three years ago, and the roofers just left it as it was before. I feel secure with it.

I appreciate the video. Great info. The only think I would have don't different is I would have put a bead of caulk down the left and right sides and not put the 4 nails at the bottom.

Don't you have to seal the cutout for the pipe too? I would think it would be a good idea to throw some sealant around the pipe there, but I'm not a roofer either, lol.
@EverydayHomeRepairs
@EverydayHomeRepairs 3 жыл бұрын
If you have a tight seal around the pipe you should be good. I think some guys just throw sealant all over everything to feel safe.
@kuzadupa185
@kuzadupa185 2 жыл бұрын
@@EverydayHomeRepairs considering very rarely is it a bad move to add more sealant, as long as you prepare the surface and apply the sealant correctly, its always better to have extra when it comes to water/rain protection. The cost for the sealant is negligible when compared against possible water damage in the future

I had a leak from a sink stack all the way to the basement, boot looked fine but I ended up putting roof cement all around the boot on the roof. 2 days later we had 2-3 inches of rain, no leaks anymore.

I would've glued the bottom half (exposed) w/the sealant instead of driving nails and sealing on top.

You shouldn’t nail the front side of the boot ever. Plumbing and electrical boots are designed to work like a shingle in that only the top gets nailed that will be covered by the shingle above. By nailing the bottom you are only creating a possible leak

Is that actually water tight between the seal and the pipe? Seems like it would need some caulking around that top edge.

Yikes, the electrical mast? My only advice to any DIYer would be to stay away and call a pro, or indeed get the utility to cut the power from the transformer on their pole. Don't be the shortcut for the power company to find ground! Your heart cannot handle it. I'm glad you got through this ok. The ladder up to the base of the mast likely kept you out of trouble. But if this were to require putting your whole body on the roof to get the job done, sorry, no, you're too close to bzzzzt, please stay away!

Hey I installed this (thank you!) But then it turned out my leak was actually coming from the guy wire bases for the pole. A roof repairman fixed it but he put the shingles OVER the rubber base of this boot rather than leaving the rubber base on top of the shingles as this video suggests. Should I worry about this? I feel it invites water under the shingles- but he did put a water barrier under it on the next layer.🤷🏻‍♀️

I've watched roofing companies here in FL just cut and wrap a galvanize boot around the pipe fill it with roof sealant and secure it with hose clamps.. SMH! Somehow this passes inspection.

why do electrical masts need a plastic/rubber boot? the sun eventually wears them out ans you get leaks. Why cant they be metal so they can last longer?

Good job ,but you made a mistake, but u never nail on the bottom instead use silcone. In five years those nails gonna rust and the pipe is gonna come loose.
