A tip that I just learned from my installation: In order to locate the drain and P trap pipe, if not already perfect, is to place the kerdi pan on the floor- the diameter of the their drain collars is 2 inches, so I used a 1 1/2" pvc pipe to mark the subfloor, and the structure below that, in my case. I then removed the pan, and had a template to work off of for moving my P trap to the proper spot.

I think what is missing from this video as well as many others and the documentation, is what is the minimum hole size required for the drain. I made a totally stupid newbie DIY mistake of taking the drain out of the box, measuring the pipe O.D., what happens to be around 2.5", and proceeding to purchase a 3" hole saw. I neglected the shoulder of the drain, which has a considerably larger diameter. The videos state to not make the hole over 5", but neglects to state the minimum diameter required. With some calipers I was able to determine that the shoulder diameter is about 4.375". So after I mortared the plywood flooring and set the pan in place, I had the unpleasant surprise of realizing the drain did not go all the way in due to the 4.375" shoulder. After the fact I did find find the template provided but it was too late. Turns out the template measures 4.625". So if you're new to this, a 4.5: hole saw should be the minimum size required, just make sure you center it well. If you want more wiggle room, but a 5" hole saw.

I got ahead of myself and used the 1/8 x 1/8 trowel to set the shower tray. The subfloor is 100% level with no imperfections, and I walked on it (with cardboard protection) so I feel like the pan made good contact with the all-set. The tray is surrounded on all sides by the existing walls and door width curb, and all-set was pushed into the small gap around the perimeter as the kerdi band was installed. So, no lateral movement of the tray is possible and the tray seems effectively locked into place. Everything else about the installation went smooth and I'm going to water test tomorrow. I'm hoping if that's the one mistake I made, then I can sleep at night. Your videos were helpful.

Hi! If you feel the tray was supported enough with the amount of thin-set used, you should be okay. Make sure it is solid and does not "give" or provide low sports or anything like that before tiling, so you can make minor adjustments, if needed, when installing the tile. Hope that helps!
@jbrian53 Жыл бұрын
@@schlutersystems1 Thanks for the follow up. That makes sense. I spread a consistent (although thin) later of thin set for the tray, but if there are any voids the tray could 'give' a bit towards the floor in that spot. Now that the thin set is dry I'll walk all over it (with puzzle mat protection) to ensure any 'give' happens before tiling. I haven't noticed any problems after crawling around on it while installing the kerdi band/corners.

I watched a YT video that installed this tray but used a roofing felt as the first layer in contact with the subfloor. The reason seemed to be so the subfloor doesn't leech the water from the thinset. Is using felt under the tray supported by Schluter? Thanks and great videos.
@schlutersystems13 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, you should NOT use roofing felt or similar under the tray. The tray is installed directly to the subfloor with Schluter-SET, Schluter-ALL-SET, Schluter-FAST-SET, or an unmodified thin-set mortar. No need to worry about the bond weakening due to the substrate absorbing any moisture from the thin-set. The thin-set is there mostly for support, rather than to keep the tray in place. Hope this helps, please feel free to reach out to our Product Support team if you'd like to discuss your project in more detail (but no roofing felt allowed 😊) 800-472-4588 (US) or 800-667-8746 (Canada). To lay the shower pan you can use their (modified) thinsets or you can use an unmodified thinset (different brand)? So you can use either or? What about a modified thinset of a different brand?
@schlutersystems1 Жыл бұрын
Hey, You can install the tray with any Schluter thin-set or another unmodified thin-set. The reason you can use Schluter-Systems’ modified thin-set mortars is because they have been specifically formulated to set and gain strength, even when sandwiched between the tray and the subfloor or impervious materials, such as tile and our membranes. Other latex-modified mortars must dry for the polymers to coalesce and form a hard film in order to gain strength. When sandwiched between two impervious materials or the tray and the subfloor, extended cure times could be required, producing unpredictable results.

I saw elsewhere that the pre formed tray for the floor you can't set tile with river rock style tiles ...is that correct? The tiles are 12 "x 12" but the rocks are not solid.
@schlutersystems13 жыл бұрын
Hi Charles. You actually can use river rock style tiles on the tray. There is no minimum tile size requirement, however, if small mosaic tiles are to be used and exposed to heavy or concentrated loads (e.g. wheel chairs) and there is a concern about weight distribution, that's when a mortar bed is recommended. The river rock style tiles must be fully supported under all “edges” with thin-set mortar. These tile types sometimes require a relatively thick bond coat to ensure proper coverage and bond to the shower base. 12 "x 12" should be fine if following this method. Hope this helps!

why is it unmodified on plywood if ditra is modified on plywood?
@schlutersystems13 жыл бұрын
Schluter SET®, ALL-SET®, FAST-SET®, or an unmodified thin-set mortar can be used to install Schluter shower trays because the purpose of the thin-set is to embed and fully support the tray, not necessarily to bond it. There is no concern for bond as the tray wouldn't have anywhere to go. The DITRA on the other hand needs to be bonded well for the uncoupling properties to function properly. Hope that helps!

Can anyone explain why the offset or left drain on pre-sloped shower tray has the drain hole centered at 9" off the wall instead of the standard 14-12". Hard to plumb a basement drain once the concrete floor and drain has already been roughed in at the standard 12".
@schlutersystems12 жыл бұрын
Hi Glenn, We based it off the standard tub drain location at around 8.5-9". The boxout in the concrete should typically be around 12", which leaves room for adjustment. Hope that helps. Can I use a different trowel size for installing the schluter tray (1/4 x 3/16 v notch, or 1/2 x 1/2 square notch) so that I don’t need to buy another trowel just for the tray?
@schlutersystems13 жыл бұрын
Hi Emily, it is recommended to use the proper size trowel when installing the tray. In a pinch you could be able to use the 1/2" x 1/2" at a less than 45 degree angle and end up with the right amount of thin-set. As we mention in the Shower System Installation Handbook, make sure to "Gently lift the underside of the tray to check coverage, then replace the cardboard and re-embed the tray" prior continuing on with your installation. But again, the right tool for the job is always the better choice. Hope this helps!

I can't really figure out the difference between this install and the video where you don't have access to the plumbing below where the drain is installed first. In both cases you are glueing the drain into the pipe below. So why bother breaking out the foam and doing the drain install and then the pan, when it seems exactly the same to do it after the pan is installed, without breaking the white foam.
@schlutersystems14 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlie, Sorry for the delay! The No-access to Plumbing video primarily targets the situations where a plumber will be installing the drain at a different time than the tray. Otherwise, the tray can be installed at the same time the drain is glued in. Hope this makes sense!
@mscottsimon3 жыл бұрын
@@schlutersystems1 I have this same question but want to be sure I understand. You are saying the drain can be installed as in this video (after base) if a plumber is available. The "no access to plumbing" video is really a convenience so the plumber doesn't have to return? Hi Mary, We can’t comment on the specific video you watched, and it’s always difficult to tell from a video whether they have been done to industry specifications and manufacturer instructions, and what other factors in the testing environment could have affected the results. Schluter products and systems have been subjected to, and passed, all required standards and testing in multiple countries including the United States and Canada. It's important that testing be carried out by independent, unbiased, third-party laboratories that are recognized and approved by the industry, and this is how Schluter's certifications are achieved. Laboratory testing and field experience over decades has proven that thin-set seams with the KERDI membrane provide effective, reliable waterproofing for tiled showers. And we stand behind that - when installed in accordance to our Shower System Installation Handbook, your installation is fully covered by our comprehensive warranty. If you have questions, or would like to speak to our Product Support team more specifically about any concerns you may have, please reach out right here: 800-472-4588 (US) or 800-667-8746 (Canada). KERDI-SHOWER-TRAY 38" X 60" OFF CENTER one is fit my shower. But there is one problem, my drain hole is 17'' from the wall. Could I cut the end for 10'' then glue it into the front?
@gbear674 жыл бұрын
No. If your drain is 17” (on centre I assume) from a wall on a 38 inch wall then you are out if luck. If your drain is 17” from a 60” wall then you will have to fill in the opposite gap with mortar ensuring to pitch and level appropriately. You’ll need an extra kerdi band there or, ideally, use a wall sheet for the entire pan. I would move the drain.

Have you ever actually installed one of these systems? This shit is so easy to install and twice as quick, you can cut it with your knife and it's 100% waterproof, with a lifetime warranty i believe. Cutting that cement board is real nasty stuff with cancer-causing agents in it. And their panels are 4x8 sheets that you can also cut with your utility knife. It would be stupid not to use this system. You save a day in installing which is where you save the most money. To do a typical shower floor you have to pre slope the floor install the rubber lining then have someone else come in and float in a sloped floor, and hope its nice and smooth with no dips or pockets and hope its slopped properly. With this system its already slopped perfectly with a perfect surface to put your tile on. If you install it properly its impossible for water to get underneath. The cost is almost as much as one of these kits. A conventional floor requires an experienced plumber to put in the floor drain and to pre slope the floor then install the rubber lining, thats a couple hrs of time in that, then a few more hours for a tile guy to mud the floor in, usually they have a helper who is mixing for them. Then the material cost which isnt alot. And then compare it to this system which would take you half hour at most, once you to do a couple of them you get better and quicker.

Can the shower tray support small format tile or pebbles?
@schlutersystems12 жыл бұрын
Hi there! In general, yes. There is no minimum tile size requirement for the shower trays. However, if small mosaic tiles are to be used and exposed to heavy or concentrated loads (e.g. wheel chairs) and there is a concern about weight distribution, a mortar bed is recommended. A similar position is taken with pebble/river rock style tiles, which must be fully supported under all “edges” with thin-set mortar. These tile types sometimes require a relatively thick bond coat to ensure proper coverage and bond to the shower base. For more information, please contact our Product Support Team at 1-800-472-4588 (USA) or 1-800-667-8746 (CAN). Hope this helps!
