Great video! Yeah I did a similar video with a couple different ways to create the shiplap look. I’m totally with you on using shiplap to cover bad drywall job. Our mud room was really bad but putting shiplap up really transformed it. I also used 1x8. Definitely more bulky but I was able to find a bunch at a really good price. Just found you here and I’ll check out some of your other videos. Cheers!

Wait.... why would you want to rip the 4x8 sheets of shiplap. It's already made to look like shiplap. It kinda defeats the purpose of having it in a 4x8 sheet or am I missing something?
@KellyConcepts6 ай бұрын
@@justjayjustjay5054 the 4x8 sheet is just a flat sheet, there's no grooves in it at all. I haven't seen pre-made shiplap sheets before.

Turns out looking great. The nickel for spacing is only needed to mimic the look of shiplap, not for expansion/contraction. Plywood does not expand/contract with humidity.

What kind of plywood should I get does it matter? Home depot has pine for $32.00, sande common $11.00 or sanded plywood for $13.00
@melissajohnson29355 жыл бұрын
You don't have to buy the $20 a sheet plywood. Buy what's called utility panels. It's like 1/4 inch plywood. It's about $10ish for 4x8 sheet

I have watched a lot of DIY shiplap videos No one addresses the nailing of the seams which are not lined up with a stud. So do you just nail into the drywall at that point? This will be my first go at this and I want to do it right. We are also running a line of liquid nails on the backside to prevent any wow in the wall.

@ritamartin39663 жыл бұрын
Heck yes!! I first saw the plywood flooring and then thought what about ply shiplap!? I am planning to fix up a mobile home to use for a few years while planning a new build. This is such a great way to cover old cheap paneling while adding some integrity to it. I would have no problem if the pabeling was actually wood but it definitely isnt!
@jeffmathers3554 жыл бұрын
Make sure the wall is very square. If not, then leveled boards will look crooked as you approach the ceiling. I learned this the hard way. If the wall is taller on 1 side, you have to gap the boards on that side just a little bit more so it's parallel

Can you apply it to existing plywood or do I have to remove the plywood

did you sand the boards before you applied them to the wall?

What if we are trying to do a ship lap design on our current fire place which is made out of real brick. How to we put the pieces on there? Adhesive? Glue? What do you recommend?
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
I've considered doing this in my new home! Liquid Nails adhesive would easily hold these panels to brick because they are very lightweight. Then around the corners, I would put a corner trim piece with additional adhesive so now each panel is supported to the brick AND to each other.

Could you use 6 inch strips instead of 8 inch? Just doing the front of my kitchen island and I think I want to do the 6 inch. Will that look ok?
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
Hey Renee! Definitely, I just did a half bathroom and used 7in - going to 6in would look great as well. I would just recommend using a smaller gap in between the boards, in this video I use a nickel as a spacer, I would go with a quarter as a spacer.

I want to do shiplap on one wall in my daughter’s room. I need the measure the wall still, but if it’s wider than 8 feet how do you stagger to boards to make the vertical seams look good? I hope that question makes sense. I know you mentioned starting from the top or bottom, but it sounds like you started form the bottom. Do you have a preference for what looks better?
@KellyConcepts5 жыл бұрын
Hey Amanda! I did a laundry room that was longer than 8ft. All you do is start from the bottom with the full 8' board and then cut the next board to the remaining length needed. Then start the 2nd row with the remaining of that cut piece. Just be sure to leave a small gap between the ends of the boards like I do between each board. I prefer having a full board on top of the baseboard so I start from the bottom. Good luck!

Did you let your wood acclimate to the temperature in your house first or did you apply it straight after cutting it?

Hey Daniel! I applied it pretty quickly after cutting it. By leaving gaps between the planks, there should be enough room for the boards to expand if needed. Thanks for watching!

What would you put on it to stop mildue mold and such due to it being thin wood
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
This particular plywood is treated - so it shouldn't get moldy. BUT if you were to try to do this in a bathroom I would suggest painting both sides of the boards (even the side you can't see against the wall) with a couple of coats of semi-gloss paint. Thank you for watching!
@andyober94894 жыл бұрын
in the video you said 1/8'' plywood, but in the description you show 1/4 - 3/16''. Is there pros and cons to each? which did you use? I'm having some trouble finding 1/16'' locally.. thanks!
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
I use 1/8 thick plywood (I'll fix my description, thank you!). Too thin and you'll be able to easily see the wall in between planks, and too thick and you'll just get dust you cant reach. I also started using quarters instead of nickels to get a smaller gap in between boards. Turned out much better. Thanks for watching!

@@KellyConcepts thanks!!!

So just to clarify you recommend 1/8 inch plywood? I’ve been researching a lot of videos most recommend 1/4 inch. I would certainly prefer 1/8 inch because it’s about $10 cheaper a sheet.
@missneagirl2 жыл бұрын
I figured that one 8th inch would be better especially with trimming around doors that are already installed. I don’t want thicker would to cover existing moldings

Thanks for the instructions! What would you advise for doing this on a framed wall with insulation for a new build? Would the roxul insulation be noticeable through the gaps and if so is there any tips to prevent that while still leaving a small gap? Thanks for your video!
@KellyConcepts5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. I would recommend stapling black or foggy plastic across the wall first so there's some sort of back drop. Then I'd make the gaps a little smaller, I used Nickels, but a quarter or dime would be better. I hope that helps!
@scotts10085 жыл бұрын
@@KellyConcepts Thank you so much what an awesome idea!!!!
@melissajohnson29355 жыл бұрын
Hang on! Before you go putting any plastic backing on inside walls you need to do your research. If you live in the south or anywhere that gets high temps and high humidity, you do not want plastic on your inside walls. It acts as a vapor lock and the contrast between your hot outside walls and cool interior walls will cause sweating on the inside of the wall and then you're going to have a massive mold problem with wet insulation. I'm not an expert at this but I do know you can only do that in really cold climates.
@rcjabroniyup49593 жыл бұрын
@@melissajohnson2935 Nice save. Hope they didn't listen to that guy. You can't just put black plastic over insulation like that.

@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin, I used a nickel for sizing which is about 1/8 thick. Just recently I finished a half bathroom using quarters for a 1/16 gap and it actually looks better.
@showspotter11 ай бұрын
my thing is, code calls for 1/2 or thicker materials to go on to studs for fire resistance so the 1/8 plywood will always have to go on top of drywall or 1/2 plywood or osb which youre gonna have to pay for first. so basically two layers. to me its cheaper to buy tng pine thats 3/4 of an inch for about $1.50sf and just do that and be done. meets the 1/2 thickness per code & looks good. what someone could do is do the finishing in drywall then mud but dont fancy it up, then glue on or tack on to studs this shiplap. i miay use 3.5 x 32in planks instead. your wall still looks great though.

Is plywood safe for indoor use? Toxic?
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
The glue for many plywoods does have formaldehyde but it's an extremely low level, doesnt emit when painted over, gradually decreases overtime, and really has no impact when there's ventilation. Those are just my thoughts anyway. People use plywood for constructing headboards and sleep right next to it.
