I used 1/2 fencing and painted it white. I have not completed the job yet, but I’ve seen it done before and the grain from the wood and the over all look, looks like shiplap- very Cape Cod.

Also, I'm considering this same option for our 1990's gargantuan master bathroom. It's currently covered with wall-to-wall pink roses wallpaper 🤮 ! Question: What's your opinion on just putting this right over leftover wallpaper residue? In other words, I'd just peel off the nasty roses wallpaper, skip the step of spending FOREVER trying to clean off that leftover residue, and just nail up the shiplap right on top? Thanks! I haven’t seen it over wallpaper so I can’t speak from experience. A couple things that come to mind though is not to use MDF board in case it leaches moisture from your shower. The thicker 1/2” plywood would show less imperfections between the planks but it’s harder to work with due to more warping. The 1/4 inch plywood is easier to work with but will show more imperfections between the planks. Maybe due a test by putting 2 or 3 planks on over a painted area and living with it few days to see how it looks from various angles and with the lighting in the room. Let us know what you end up doing and how it turns out. *The sure way is to remove the wallpaper and paint it•

Do you prefer to use glue on the boards or not? If so why? If not why? I’m going back and forth with this, specifically in my bathroom where I would be dealing with shower steam. I don’t want any bowing over time or potential mold developing behind the boards if that’s a thing. I saw where you spoke on using oil base prime in bathroom which I will do. Thanks for the tip.

I only used a little adhesive on one board when I shiplapped my kitchen backsplash by the sink and stove area because it was warped before I even installed it. I wouldn’t be afraid to use adhesive in the future though. Down the road if you remove shiplap which was affixed with adhesive you will rip off some drywall probably so you would want to make sure you are OK with that. I will link my other shiplap video below where I affixed one board with adhesive to the wall and used a temporary brace until dry in case you haven’t seen it yet and are interested in viewing it. Should I paint my beige walls white first if I want a look with clean lines? I’ve noticed walls that were darker in colors appear through the cracks and makes the project not look as clean.

Your welcome and thanks for watching. We marked the stud locations ahead of time; it’s been a while but we don’t remember any misses. Usually you will know if you hit a pipe or something dense as the Brad nail won’t go in all the way or becomes more mangled looking. Good chance with our older dense pipes a miss wouldn’t damage them. But anything’s possible I suppose. :)

Make sure to use spark rings on the outlets. Electrical code does not allow exposed wood around switches and recepticals. Spark rings are thin plastic box extenders

In the kitchen I thought the thicker plywood wood would give a little bit more upscale look. The MDF board in the bathroom off the master bedroom was due to watching other you tubers use it and trying it. I used the thinner 1/4” plywood in the tiny bathroom without the shower due to its lower cost and since it seemed to be the most popular material and that’s the one I like the best. What color white paint do you recommend using on your shiplap?

Really comes down to preference.For the top coat what we like is Sherwin Williams paint. I painted the shiplap back splash in our kitchen by our sink with their high hide white Emerald urethane trim enamel interior exterior semi gloss paint. That’s my favorite and it’s expensive so wait until they have a 30% or 40% off sale. Get on their email list. It is little more shiny. They have other options as well if you prefer less shine but it’s great for clean up. 😊

You might not have really had an issue with the MDF because it's just a powder room, but don't EVER use it in a full bathroom with a shower or bath, it'll soak up water like cardboard you it'll fit away and mold faster than you can imagine

Great video! Was your MDF shiplap pre-primed or raw? We will be installing in our bathroom because we like the smooth surface and how well it looks painted. Many "internet experts" say don't use it in a bathroom due to moisture. However I have read many that have used it and have no issues whatsoever years later because the boards were painted. Also when you go to some of the hardware store websites that sell MDF shiplap, they have pictures of it being used on bathroom walls - go figure.

Hi. I would suggest staggering the boards. If you search on KZbin...staggering faux shiplap....a couple videos come up. I would be sure to have the ends come together on a stud and sink a couple extra nails carefully without splitting the wood. In our kitchen above our sink I filled the gap with drywall compound and lightly sanded with 220 sandpaper after dry. May have to do twice. It looks nice to us but if you go looking up close you can tell in some places that it is two boards butted up. Because it’s random it works. But it’s all preference and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You may want to consider staggering the seams and not filling with drywall compound as that is less work and also an awesome look. Let us know what you end up doing and how it turns out.

I’m putting ship lap across 2x4’s with no drywall behind it, and I’m concerned that you’ll see dark ‘spaces’ in between the ship lap. Is it essential to put a 1/4” plywood behind it and paint it white so that you don’t see dark spaces between the boards or just leave it? Thanks!

Depends on if you’re doing some sort of a real type shiplap that has a tongue and groove set up versus applying quarter inch cut pieces to be for faux shiplap. If you’re using faux shiplap, I think you’re gonna want some sort of a plywood or drywall, or some sort of backing behind your full shiplap. Having some sort of sheathing behind the faux shiplap will also reduce the amount of bowing inward or outward of the shiplap I would think Hope that helps. 😊

Hi Linda. I have never personally put shiplap on a plaster wall so unfortunately I can’t speak from experience. But here is what I think. You would want to make sure the plaster wall is in good condition first. Options are using an adhesive with some temporary nailing. Or may have to put 1/4” plywood sheets on wall to have something to affix your shiplap to. Plaster walls can be a nightmare to work with. Great question. I was meaning that when they cut them at a big box store they need to be careful when cutting them. One store employee one time was in a hurry and carelessly cut the plywood that comes sanded on one side with the bevel going the wrong way. It’s ok to bevel if beveled correctly. Use bin primer on mdf it does not stink near as bad as oil base and dry time is remarkably fast. Light sand with 220 and it works best if you spray it on.

Hard to say without seeing. My first thought is no if it’s a rougher surface. Maybe you can paint two or three boards and hold them up on the wall to get a better feel of what kind of vibe it gives. Good luck

With a little math you can still start at the bottom if you do not have a helper. It is a lot easier starting at the bottom. Just take the height of your wall and divide it by the width if your panel. The best way to get this width is lay 4-6 panels on the floor with what ever you are using for spacers in between the panels measure the total width and divide by the number of panels you put on the floor. If your number does not come out even and If you have a narrower piece start with that on the bottom.

If you like the randomness of the gaps, and the randomness of how the shiplap meets the ceiling, and the randomness of the swelling, then why not leave the nails showing for their randomness too? All these imperfections are what gives this technique/style its character.

Thank you so much. We used 6” faux shiplap widths everywhere except for the kitchen backsplash. Above the kitchen sink and below the window above it measures 4 & 1/2”. Therefore 4 & 1/2” is the width on the bottom piece of backsplash shiplap used. Above that is 6” and above that 4”. I hope that makes sense. If possible I would remove the wall paper. We would suggest using plywood and not use paneling and buying plywood that comes pre-sanded on one of the sides. Let us know what you end up using and how it turns out. :)

You should have added cove crown molding on top. You’re right that you see the top more than than the bottom, however both are important. Take the drop of the crown molding into consideration when planning your starter course. The bottom baseboard height can vary so you have constant look. Also 1/4” plywood is a poor choice, You see all the grain.

Your welcome and that’s a great question. We chose not to use any adhesive because at some point in time we may want to remove the faux Shiplap for the sake of changing things. I.e. we didn’t want to rip the walls up when removing the faux Shiplap. And it worked out well this way for us. It is staying in place very well thus far (some of its been on the wall for 5 years). We can only share what worked for us on our walls. I hope this helps some! Take care 😊

You just need to fill the gaps on the edges with 45-minute hot mud or use trim to cover edges. If you use oil-based paint or primer in a wet area, you will get mold.

Good question. Definitely not with MDF board in my opinion. I would think you could with real wood or plywood if you seal it well and have very efficient removal of moisture with a quality fan when showering. Good question. I never considered using it in our home because I like more depth. But if someone likes the look go for it. We just started renovating our travel trailer and due to it being more light weight maybe we should consider using it in our trailer. Thanks for leaving us a comment :)

The mdf shiplap I purchased is prefinished. I don't think I even need to paint it, if I want white... im going onto a decent plaster wall, so I'm trying to decide if I use 1½ furring strips or just glue it to the wall and use vertical batten to finish

I’m a new home owner and would love to know what would you recommend for me to do to merge two piece together and make it seem like one , the wall is bigger then 8ft

Hi. We would suggest staggering the boards. You can draw it out on paper first. I would be sure to have the ends come together on a stud and sink a couple extra nails carefully without splitting the wood. Could also use some construction adhesive. In our kitchen above our sink I filled the gap with drywall compound and lightly sanded with 220 sandpaper after dry. May have to do twice. It looks nice to us but if you go looking up close you can tell in some places that it is two boards butted up. Because it’s random it works in my opinion. I’ll put below a link to another video we did that shows you what we did in our kitchen. Good luck.

make a 45 deg cut away from sight from where you walk in the room. seperate the two 45 deg pcs by an 1/8 inch, and caulk. youll never see it from entering the room.

Great point. I usually make similar type cuts when installing long runs of baseboard.

Never use your finger to apply spackling compound. It will never be flush with the wall surface. Use a a small to med putty knife instead. When the compound is fully dry lightly sand the compound then take a slightly damp rag and wipe the edges.

Eh, my experience with the 1/4” cheap plywood is it’s delaminating and harder to control when ripping as it’s so flimsy. I’ll never go that route again. Just get the real shiplap and do it right.
