I just want to personally thank you for this video. I have a 1990 Toyota pick up that I just put some of these in. Went ahead and got the harness just to be safe, and sure enough it was needed! if it weren’t for you showing what was wrong I would’ve probably had an extremely difficult time figuring it out. Thank you so much! I love my new headlights so far. ♥️

I actually really appreciate that you kept your "failed" first attempt at "plug and play" because that's EXACTLY what I experienced when I went to plug in my LED light. Same as you, I swapped the wiring around (actually tried many other combos too), but kept getting High Beams on all the time, and when flashing my high beams, it turned off... Then searched a bit and found that Toyotas are switched ground, and these lamps assume a more standard switched positive. So we need the relay wiring kit you ordered (or I guess you can wire it yourself, but for $18, the parts and time to do it is worth that much). Had I seen your video before I started this project, I would have known what to expect and saved some time, but oh well, it's always trial and error with these old Toyotas. BTW, my car is a 1986 MR2 (AW11), and I also have a 1988 Celica (ST165) and 1992 Celica (ST185): they all had the same issue - pretty safe to assume any old Toyotas with the H6054 7x6 headlights have the same wiring. P.S. Also got a good laugh about the rusted headlight ring retainer screw. Those damn things are always rusted on every Toyota I had and the Vise Grip method is my favorite method too!

I bought a kit with the many led lights for my 84 Toyota and was very frustrated my brights wouldn’t work. I bough a wiring kit from somewhere out west similar to the one you bought and plugged it up the same way. Still didn’t work. It was a waste of 50 bucks. I hardwired a toggle switch to turn on my brights. I’m really disappointed and am looking for some nice good old fashioned bright halogens now. Glad your stuff worked mine was a waste.

Good video. I went from using one, to using two H4 harnesses. The stock Toyota has redundancy (separate fuses for left and right). This setup only uses one Toyota fuse and has only one fuse going from the battery to both headlights. Either fuse blows and both headlights go out at the same time. With two harnesses, I'm using both Toyota fuses left and right, and now running separate fuses for left and right headlights from the battery. Interesting, the high beam indicator light on the dash didn't work with one harness, but now works with two. I simply cut off the part of the harness I was no longer using that went to the second headlight, capped off the exposed wire ends with small wire nuts and some electrical tape. I then added wire to the hot on one harness to reach across to the battery. I used the leftover wire and conduit to lengthen the hot and soldered and taped the connections on the hot. Then it's just plug and play. A good investment for only 17 dollars for the second harness. Much, much safer to have each side fused separate so you don't risk losing both headlights at once!

@autocrow2 ай бұрын
@@stevenshackelford1032 The harness has the relay in it. Connect the harness to the headlight on one end and to the battery on the other. In the middle there is a place to plug in your old (stock) headlight plug to control the new harness and relay. I used 2 harnesses, so I have 2 fuses. One for each headlight instead of 1 fuse for both headlights. I didn't like the thought of losing both headlights at once if the single fuse blew.

Nice video…definitely a big upgrade over the stock H6054 sealed beams. I also ran into the same issue when installing my JW Speaker 8900 H6054 LED headlights on my 1994 Toyota pickup. Toyota trucks use a double switched ground system which causes the issue since the LED’s headlights are designed to work with a switched positive system. I put on the led headlights and some plug and play led tail lights but my truck doesn’t idle anymore after installing the tail lights and it starts shocking me once I crank it over and touch any metal
@6thGearGarageАй бұрын
I'd start by removing each light one at a time and seeing if it still shocks you. When the problem goes away, you've found the culprit. Sounds like some wires are crossed somewhere and causing a short.

So this video is a year old, how are these holding up now? Any issues after a year?
@6thGearGarage3 жыл бұрын
Funny you mentioned this... I just saw a little moisture in one of the headlights for the first time a couple of days ago, after I washed the truck. It appears to have gone away now.

There's a link in the description. Mine is still working great.

Will that harness work for any headlight set?
@6thGearGarage2 жыл бұрын
I've only used it for Toyota trucks, but it may work for others as well, as long as the plug is the same (H4)

They come with both lights.

Im pretty sure I followed your instructions and lights are working great. Only thing is... now my truck won’t start. Dash lights are on, power seems normal but it won’t turn over the starter which it sounds like. Any solution

Hey fellas working on a 92 pickup I changed the bulbs to LEDs but the blinkers and flashers blink way too fast. Any idea what I can do to fix this issue?
@6thGearGarage29 күн бұрын
@@rudyalvarez8339 what kind of lights did you use?
@rudyalvarez833928 күн бұрын
@ just some aftermarket bulbs that I purchased on Amazon. They had the same type of connection but maybe there just cheap. They look very nice and bright the fast blinking is just not what I wanted
@6thGearGarage28 күн бұрын
You will probably need to install a resistor because the relay thinks the bulb is burned out because LED's draw less power.

I did the exact same install on my truck except I used the harness from trail gear I think it was and I went with the three-row LED headlights. I watched your video and it was exactly the same thing for me. After I put the harness on though everything work good except all my gauges move with the blinker when my headlights are on as well as I can barely see the high-beam icon in my Dash. I talked to an automotive electrician who said he's pretty sure there must be power going out my ground and that I would need I think he said a transistor or something? I checked all my grounds are all nice and clean I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

I was gonna say check the grounds but you already did. Im not sure what the problem could be.

@6th Gear Garage, I got these lights with the harness for my 1987 Toyota pickup. However one of the light seems to be brighter then the other as if it were a high beam, but when I do turn on the high beams it gets even brighter then the other. Any reason why this is happening?
