I've watched a lot of WLED and ESP32 KZbin's, many leaving me with more unanswered questions than interest, but your approach is very instructional in a "hands-on" sort of way that encouraged my interest into action! I ordered my own WS2812B's and a few ESP32's to tinker with, and after some initial head scratching and a little Googleization about pin-out assignments for the different versions of boards I was able to get my first instance of WLED up and running.

Great video, this was very helpful in getting me started in the world of LEDs, ESPs, soldering, etc. It's worth mentioning that i could not get my LEDs to light up on first try because for whatever reason the GPIO was defaulted to 16 in the WLED configs. Once i set it to 2, success! I just thought i'd point that out just in case anyone else comes across that issue. Cheers

A well done video, one thing I would have mentioned though is to power the ESP32 and the LED from the same power supply like that, its a 5v power supply. Someone that follows this using 12v LED and a power supply is in for a not so fun surprise! An option is to add a buck converter to step down the power for the ESP Board, I have done this and have videos on it, has worked very well for me, and I only use 12v LED's these days to help combat the voltage drop for long runs.

@@ChrisMaherDIY Like you I use BTF for just about everything. I am using pretty much exclusivity the WS2815's now pretty much just the 12v version of the WS2812s. For my under counter lights, if I re-do them in the future I would like to find a good 12v LED that has RGBW with a dedicated white channel for better lighting to use for illumination and not just ambience/decorative.

Are you finding any need to add a resister for noise issues to your ESP32/8266 data pin? Also are you guys finding any issues with power surge ? Like needing to add a capacitor to that LED strip as well? Ive watched a few videos now and i havent seen that they have been added. Maybe not a requirement with a good power supply 🤔

@@stevenmoriarty6909 Off the many projects I have done, only one of them has interference issues, it is also the only one that has long data wires spanning gaps where I am not running LED's. I only have ever seen it or noticed it when I have then turned off, sometimes a random LED might turn on, to combat this my "off" setting simply sets the LEDs to black instead of off so they constantly get a new data signal to be told "off" A fuse of some sort is always a good idea in the power side. Especially 12v. The best AIO unit is the QuinLED modules it has all this built in, but they are much more expensive than a $2 ESP32 chip or something, but for piece of mind, quality, or to avoid the DIY soldering and such its a great option.

Excellent voice and presentation. May I suggest that you present the flashing and wled phone app operation, a little slower? I have downloaded/flashed about 40 ESP32s and rarely can I get them to operate on the wled phone app, the same. Once in a while, I am able to change the name on the app, but rarely. I change the name in led preferences in two locations and most of the time I don't get a name change. I was hoping you were doing something different. I especially liked your presentation on using color palettes with different effects and segments. I haven't seen that in other similar how-to videos. I hope you do more.

I have one I've been lucky with a Esp32S v3 Nodemcu I thought it was working coz I put on thicker power wires on the chip has been working ever since ... so bought a new of the same from start put thicker power cables (than jumper cables I first tried with on first one) but sadly have had problems with this one like problems I had at first.. but clearly not related to the cables then only... sometimes I can connect for like maybe 2 hours but it will disconnect at some point other times have to turn on/off alot before I can even connect to it... I have mo idea why it isn't working... (connected to WiFi with running 5V on same power supply as the leds are on)...I might try the holding down of "boot" button.... I'm sad about this coz here in Denmark it's very easy to get this chip Esp32S Nodemcu ... haven't seen so many other chips

Just a recommendation, BUT in the CONFIGURATION SECTION, choose GPIO 2 if using the ESP 32, 2 corresponds to the D4 pin. I was confused my lights didn’t initially come on and I looked closely at your set up and noticed yours was a GPIO 2. Once I made the change and hit save, THEY CAME ON!

I believe you would select ws281x for the ws2815 led strips but I believe the ws2815 led strips are 12v so I'm not sure if there is different wiring or setup in the app. I do know under led preferences there is a spot where you can select WS2815 (12) for power so I'm sure that is one setting that would need to be selected.

I bought some ESP32 dev boards with LoRa but haven’t made use of them much, they have all the standard headers to connect things but also have an oled display, hopefully it’ll still work. I currently have a string controlled via old laptop to a mini 8-bit arduino and GLEDIATOR which isn’t the most efficient.

Thanks so much for watching and good luck! I would say see if there is any pin with a 2 or 3 and start there. In WLED under preferences, there is the ability to tell the program what data pin you are using so you would want to make sure that is the same as the pin you do end up trying first!

I had to try like 6 different ones before I found one that worked. Other than that, one time I did have a bad esp device. Very nice explanation! How do you clean up the power supply and esp board though? Do you put them in a case or something? Any tips for giving the power supply and esp board a clean look? Also, does WLED work for COB/FOB strips? I just ordered ws2812b COB 320 leds per meter, they look awesome. Just not sure how soldering works on those since there is only positive and negative and if the esp board works for the strip.

Nothing special at all but its out of sight and that's all I care about! I know some people put the esp boards in like a soap box to give it some protection: amzn.to/37UZZtG That's a great questions about the cob strips! I'm not 100% sure but I would imaging they would work the same as any other ws2812b strip. Are the cob ones individually addressable? They do look awesome from pictures so I'm gong to have to try ordering some and testing out myself one of these days!!

Hey Chris, I'm trying to do a setup similar to this using 55 feet (3.25 strips) WS2811 strips using a esp32 board. Everything is connected properly but the wled doesn't seem to be working, it connects to my internet, the lights turn on but the Wled app says they're offline. I am not sure why, because they've worked before I started to put them up, everything seems to be connected and installed properly. Any help is appreciated!

I would like to construct a similar panel but would like it to be X/Y addressable to display scaled images/photos. Can you please comment on how you wired the individual strips in the matrix. Specifically, do you just cut and connect the next strip with short pieces of wire OR do you need to reverse the next strip and connected it with wires that are as long as a strip back to the previous strip. Putting it another way, Can WLED be configured to know that every-other-strip in a matrix needs to be addressed in reverse-order?

I personally would probably try wiring them in parallel back to the controller vs in series but probably a personal preference on just how I think it would look best with all the lights doing the same thing at the same time. But i have never tried splitting the data that many times so I'm not sure if there would be any issues. But running them in series would obviously allow you to have all the leds act as 1 long strip if that is more the look your going for. I wish I had some first hand experience with this but I'm just guessing lol. I think both ways should work but probably just boils down to what you think will look best and provide the most flexibility down the road.

i am having a lot of trouble with my esp32 board, its a devkitv1. It will only connect to wifi while powered by micro-usb through my pc. When plugged in to external power source the red LED on the board lights up, but it never boots up a wled server. Ive tried downloading the drivers, reinstalling wled, ive held the boot button down. To me it seems to be a board/Wled problem, but idk what to try anymore.

You can keep it set to 2000 and see how you think things look or you can change it to something higher and see if it gets brighter and if you like how that looks. 2000 has generally been what I use because its usually always bright enough for what I'm trying to do.

Thanks so much for watching! I believe you can do parallel in both data and dc. I know I've done a few projects in parallel and I've simply just split the data line coming from the ESP device and it works perfect. Both strips do the exact same thing at the same time with zero lag or difference in animations.

Question- Bought everything on your list, thank you for making it easy to learn this. I designed a lamp made from square steel tubing, and I think the steel caused a short while I was testing the circuit. Now the strip won’t light past ~50th led except for a couple at about the 75th LED that just shows a dim green light. Is it possible that, if one of the resistors sparked against the steel housing, it would kill a section permanently? I’ve seen LEDs that were actually burnt out and replaced all of those sections, but none of these LEDs look bad. Some details: using the big power supply, soldered all sections in series using 18 gauge wire, and I’ve tried swapping out the controller board. It’s only about 8ft of LEDs with wire in between each section of 2ft, maybe there’s a setting I’m missing in the config? I played with the strips before beginning the project and they worked with 2 strips in series. Anyway, thanks for any insight you can give 😅

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Bummer your having issues! That seems like a strange issue! So one time something happened and my strip no longer did anything. I tried everything I could think of and nothing got it working. I eventually tried cutting off the first led of the strip and connected the rest of the strip back and everything worked perfectly. Im not sure if you have any extra strips of LEDs but that would be the first thing I would try. Connecting your current setup to a new led strip and see what happens. If that new strip works perfectly then more than likely something happened to an led or LEDs. On the strip that is no longer working, I would probably cut off the first led that's not working and reconnect the rest and see what happens. I'm honestly not smart enough in terms of all the electrical aspects to know if the steel could have caused a short but I'm sure it's possible! Troubleshooting is never fun but I do always seem to learn something new when I have to do it! Let me know if you figure it out because I'm curious myself what it might be!

Most of the strips that are not individually addressable are I believe considered analog. I have really never worked with those type of led strips so I'm not exactly sure if they would work. My guess is they can but since I have not tried it myself I'm not sure on the process. Maybe someone else reading through the comments might know for sure and can chime in! If I do try this myself down the road, i'll for sure make a video since I'm sure there are a lot of people with the same question!

I generally set mine to 3000mA Anything higher than that is just way too bright for my liking. There is also a nice voltage calculator at the top of that page that will estimate what power supply you should use for the number of lights you input!

In the video you need to make it clear that both are 5v supplies and that you fed that into the 5v pin on the esp32. Otherwise people building this will blow up the esp at least and possibly the led strips! The app is very cool!

So I got two esp8266 and they did the same thing. Was it maybe because I used the jumper wires or maybe the light settings on the wled app set to 2500 was the issue. For the esp32 would jumper wires and phone charger work ok with it. I wonder if it was because I unplugged and replaced it a lot. Either way I'm gonna try the esp32 with the jumper cable and phone charger.

Hey Chris, love the tutorials, very helpful. Maybe you can help me with my issue, once you've connected the wires and head to the WLED APP, you press "discover lights ' and it looked like the app saw your controller immediately. What do I do if the phone APP doesn't locate my esp32 controller? when I go to Wi-Fi on my phone I can see the controller in my "Other Networks" so I know it's working, but the APP just can't locate my ESP32.

If so, I would maybe do that and somewhere under settings find the IP address. then go back to your app and I believe there is an option to try adding a device via the ip if its not finding it automatically. Good afternoon, congratulations for your videos, they are fabulous. I have a doubt and if you can clarify I would be grateful. I need to put WRGB leds in a case letter. I was thinking of using the ESP32. Once configured and programmed, the ESP32 can work Offline to make a certain sequence of colors and effects, it turns on (ON with a switch ) and the ESP32 starts working and carrying out the predefined routine. So because there is so much info and also non info on how to properly power these strips. From this video it seems necessary to power these strips along with the esp board. We are trying to run about 367 leds but we were just running the 5v into the esp board with huge brightness loss after the first 47. Thanks for the video. I was looking at the SK6812 page on BTF Lightings site and it mentions 18W per metre for the 5V 60 LEDs/M strip. So 90W for the full strip, which an online calculator suggests would require an 18A DC 5V power supply. Does that sound correct?

I've always been able to run a small amount of led lights using the micro usb with no issues but others have said that you should not do it this way because it could fry the board (which I have never had happen to me) But I will say, when powering things with the micro usb, i generally have the brightness limiter set to 850ma so I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not!

Again great video Chris. You already helped me out such a lot. But I have this particular scenario where I want to ambient light a whole room floor across the walls. I got all Information I need corresponding the necessary power injections. But in my case I have a door dividing one wall. How do I Deal with this in terms of data wire continuity. My thought was wireing it above the door together with my power wires. Is that even possible? I am talking about a big 30 meters setup so the wires for the injections will be extrem long aswell. Is there voltage loss on these aswell? Would be so glad if you or somebody of this lovely Community might help me out on this one. Cheers Luke

Thanks for watching buddy! In my recent video where I make a rgb board and batten design, I ended up having to run wires around a window. I'm not 100% sure but maybe what your trying to do around the door could be done in a similar way to what I did with the window? kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGKWh3-fgJx0hbc If I was going to do a more permanent install, I would have probably took the trim down around the window and somehow found a way to run the wires underneath the trim boards and then put everything back together. @@ChrisMaherDIY Do you know if the wires youre using for injecting power also have a voltage dropoff after a certain amount of range? For my project I am talking about the longest injection having 15 meters to run before soldering it to the LED strip.

@@Phantser Great question! I'm certainly no electrician but my understanding is that there will be voltage drop no matter what wire you use. What will increase the amount of drop will be using thin wires and having long wires. Now will voltage drop so much after a certain point that it will not even power on the lights? That's a great question and I'm sure at some point it would. I'm completely guessing but I think if you ran 15 meters of the 18gauge wires I used, I think there would still be plenty power left to run leds (also depends on how many you are trying to power after the 15 meter run) My best advice is to make sure and buy wires from amazon that have free returns. Test it out and see how it looks and if it does not work, return them and try buying some thicker wires and repeat.

For very good performance, it is recommended to use 800 LEDs/pin with 4 outputs for a total of 3200 LEDs. For good performance, you can use 1000 LEDs/pin with 4 outputs for a total of 4000 LEDs. For okay performance, you can use 1000 LEDs/pin with 5 outputs for a total of 5000 LEDs. For okay performance, you can use 800 LEDs/pin with 6 outputs for a total of 4800 LEDs. ESP32 can calculate about 65k-85k LEDs per second (that means 1000 LEDs @~70fps, 2000 LEDs @~35fps, 4000 LEDs @~18fps) 4 outputs seem to be the sweet spot.
