High quality video!. so the measurement should always taken at the bottom side of the molding and at the tip of the cut regardless if it is IC or OC. correct?
@DIYwithMAX
@DIYwithMAX Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. That is correct. If your saw is set up like shown in the video then measuring the bottom will give you tops that line up as well

Kids never use caulk to fill nail holes! Wood putty for nail holes caulk for gap between trim and wall or ceiling and inside corners wood putty for seams and outside corners if needed.

Caulk has got the stretch needed to make sure it does not dry out and crack. That’s why I use it. I’m sure your suggestion will work as well but for how long. My method has worked for 12 years with no issues. Are you getting similar results?

Great work Max😁💪 Yea I've never seen someone using spruce or pine even for proper backing. But i guess if you don't want to locate the studs & mark them you can also do it this way. Not to be redundant. You've always made & used the sample inside/outside pcs for installing & it's always worked for you??

Yes as long as you make sure the cuts are right to begin with. If for any reason your sample peace’s are not cut right they will not line up. Thanks for taking the time to leave comment and supporting the channel by subscribing. If I can help in any way with your project please let me know.

What is the size of the spruce strips? 2x2? 1x3? And you adjust it to fit the sample molding, touching both the ceiling and the wall right?, then you nail the strip to the ceiling and wall right?
@DIYwithMAX
@DIYwithMAX 2 жыл бұрын
Hey I hope this answers your question. We use 1x2 inch spruce. Correct adjust with the sample molding peace so it has the right angle and then nail it in to wall and sealing. Be careful so it does not slip on you when your using the nailer. It’s best to check the fit after it is nailed as well. Also the spruce is not perfect so you may have to cut it to smaller peace’s to get rid of the curves in the spruce. Thank you for taking the time to ask additional questions and subscribing to support the channel. Please let me know if I can help in any other way.

Great video, thanks, what size of nail did u use to hold the 1x2 spruce to keep it firm? And what size did you use for the crown molding

Thanks for your reply, do the spruce stay firm even if nailed to the drywall or it needs to be mailed to the studs? Thanks
@DIYwithMAX
@DIYwithMAX Жыл бұрын
We did not focus on making sure it is nailed in to the studs but there is a high probability that you will hit a bunch of studs any way. But even if you don’t securing the spruce to the studs it is very hard to remove it if it’s just nailed in to the Sheetrock. We used this method in my place 11 years ago and the molding looks the same as when it was installed.

I gave up and took everything back to HDepot. I couldn't make interior corners to match each other. I was always having a quarter of an inch gap at the top of the mounting. I couldn't figure it out why and gave up after 3 hours of trying.

@DIYwithMAX - 🇺🇦 i guess i figure it out what was my mistake. I didn't align them right on the wall. I will follow your idea with that wood underneath.
@DIYwithMAX
@DIYwithMAX Жыл бұрын
That is awesome, way to stick with it. The spruce does make it easier to nail it up. Just make sure you keep the spruce 3 to 4 inches away from the corners so you have space for the molding to meet up. If you have any more questions let me know and I’ll be happy to chat about your project.

@@DIYwithMAX i am about to tackle my kitchen. I did my bathroom a couple month ago and the ceiling was very uneven, luckily we did a dark grey molding and ceiling paint for the bathroom so between that and the caulk, it hid the imperfections. I like the idea of the spruce for my kitchen. But if my ceiling is as uneven as the bathroom, should i find the low point on all 4 walls of the kitchen and work off that, then just cover the gap on top with caulk? Or do you just try to get it as close to the ceiling and wall as possible even if its not dead straight? i hope my question makes sense. Best video ive seen on CM installs
@DIYwithMAX
@DIYwithMAX 9 ай бұрын
@JoePopalisky that’s awesome that your taking this one. We had some uneven ceilings as well and you just try to line it up as best you can the gaps should be minimal the longer the run is. And you cover the rest with caulk like you did in the bathroom. If your getting big gaps double check the angle of the spruce to make sure it’s angled properly as it can cause alignment issues if not fitted at correct angle behind the molding. The sample peace of the molding you use will dictate the angle. Also having the spruce backer will help you better shape the molding as you will have a lot of area to nail to. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions please email me at DIYwithMax@gmail.com and we can continue the conversation there. I’m always happy to help folks in the community.

Before any of this! Make sure your ceiling is level! Older houses walls and ceilings can be warped and very off level. In my grandmothers townhouse on the top floor ceiling the whole ceiling is off and sagging in the middle where the skylight is. I put up a 12 ft crown moulding piece before I checked with the laser level and then realized its off 3 inches from one side to the other. Im going to have to rip the drywall out and reframe parts of the ceiling, drywall, mud, sand and paint before I can put the crown molding on. I'm just glad to help and will make it a fun project and keep a positive mental attitude. Cheers guys 👍

Why do you call the nailers "spruce"?
@DIYwithMAX
@DIYwithMAX Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question. The strips of wood used for nailers as you call it are strips of cheep species of wood named spruce. I call them that so if someone watching who is not familiar with what wood to use does not go with more expensive options at a lumber yard.

I totally get where you're coming from, and your suggestion would be spot on for a professional carpenter. This video, though, is aimed at beginners who are just getting started and might make a few common mistakes. That's why I included the solution to the most frequent problem. I hope this helps explain my choice!
