Thank you so much for this great advice! I have a 9 year old black lab female and in one month I'll be bringing home an 8 week old yellow lab female. I've been searching through lots of videos on youtube in order to come up with the best game plan to introduce the two dogs. I absolutely love what you said about focusing on building a bond with the puppy first, at least for a few days, before doing an introduction. All of your awesome training videos are giving me the confidence I need to feel good about being able to put in the work and train my new puppy the right way. :)

Thank you Vickie! It's often an overlooked part of the "getting a new puppy" process. But it's so important to reduce the amount of stress the older dogs, and the puppy will have to deal with during this exciting time!

Oh that VERY exciting! In the interest of both the dogs, there is no need to rush the process. The most important thing is to make sure it's a seamless transition when introducing a new puppy to your home. Follow these steps, and have fun with your new Chow Chow puppy! Happy Training! ~Ken

This is so helpful, I am getting my own puppy in September and we have an older husky in the house who belongs to my uncle. Ziva is very dog and people friendly. She plays well with other dogs she is sometimes sad when the neighbor's dogs aren't their yard. She tries to greet every person and dog. She is very good at playing with my cousin's puppy. So I will remember this tips when I bring my little guy home when the time comes.

We have in the house 2 pups (where I'm visiting + will be having one of themwhen i leave in 2/3 weeks ) - A reactive nervous Dutch Shepherd. + my other 2: one is 19, the other is a lively 9 year old. So, i will be seperating them even more so + having one to ones. Thank you.

Using one of the older pack members to help train the puppy is a great tool as well. Placing puppy where she can watch as you work the older dog. E easy peasy lemon squeezy LOL

My key takeaways, please ignore: 1. Keep dogs totally separate for the first few days 2. Put new dog in crate and have current dog loose 3. Let her out of crate and do tricks you've been working on with her around other dog 4. If she distracted, get other dog out 5. Use high value treats like cheese or chicken when training with distraction around. 6. Control the environment so she only has opportunities to make good choices 7. Build strong bond before really introducing the other dog so she pays attention to you. 8. Focus on your relationship with the dog first, then their relationship with each other 9. SCHEDULE TRAINING SESSIONS (5:07 good training schedule example)

Thanks for the videos. We're bringing home two puppies, and we're a family of four (to be six...). Should we train the two siblings separately? And should there be just one principle trainer per dog, or can the four of us be involved in training both dogs? Love to hear your take.

Hi there, Ed M! Yes, it's really important to teach your puppy that you're worth listening to before you give them an opportunity to find value in playing with another dog. Both for your older dog's sake and for yours! Teaching your puppy to listen to you, regardless of the distraction is really important. They will have lots of time to spend together after you've taught your puppy that listening to you comes first! Happy Training! ~Ken

Thank you so much for this video, it helps me a lot! I was afraid if I was capable of introducing our new puppy to our elderly dogs in a fair and proper way (one of them is a 15 1/2 year old Jack Russel who is physically fit but needs a lot of rest...) and we’ll go get our new puppy in two weeks from now. I didn’t feel comfortable with the idea of separating them during the first weeks and thought that maybe it wasn’t fair... but now I know I’ll definitely try your way, huge help to me !🙏🏼❤️

Where do you keep your other dogs so they aren’t yet introduced to your puppy? We’re considering getting a new dog in a few months, and I wanna be ready? My older dog has free roam of the house even when we’re not there because we’ve trained him well. Would separation through a puppy gate suffice or do I need them in totally separate rooms?

@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 7 жыл бұрын
Every dog will have their own "speed". This can change over time, or it may be part of who they are. Be sure that the more excited dog doesn't pester the more relaxed dog. They will be able to have some time to get their energy out when on a walk, or during a supervised play session. But it's important that both dogs get a chance to just be themselves. Don't allow your Rottweiler to constantly bother your Pitbull when he or she is trying to just be comfortable. It may be a good idea to separate them until they have both had some time to figure out what the speed of life will be within your household! Hope this helps, Happy Training!

I really appreciated your video! I kind of thought about keeping the puppies separate from my older dogs until the bond between he and I was stronger I’m picking him up today. But this just reassured me that that was correct. My question though is I have a six-year-old black lab female and a yellow lab beagle mix 12 year old female. My question is When puppy is in his crate, should I allow the other dogs to be near the crate to get used to seeing him and smelling him ? puppy is an 8 week old border collie Australian Shepherd mix. We start puppy training classes when he is 13 weeks (earliest I could get)

@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Ryan! Mastiffs can get a bad name for being “stubborn”, but believe me, with the tens of thousands of different dogs we have trained the Mastiffs can be a just as biddable as any dog. If you feel like your you’re struggling, it may be worth separating the dogs entirely until you start to feel like you have better control. It’s going to be really important that you figure out what is going to motivate each Mastiff to listen. This may not be the same thing for both. Once you have figured that out, training will be a little easier. Be clear, consistent and fair with your information and you’ll have control in no time! Happy Training! ~Ken

@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Alex Plays! It may take some time, but following the steps mentioned in the video will be really helpful. The worst thing you can do at this point is force the dogs to interact with each other. It sounds like you're making some great choices already. Having both dogs on-leash will be really important. Also having them in an area where they have lots of room to choose to not interact if they don't feel like it. Do some training exercises with your puppy while someone stands with your older dog far enough away that they aren't a distraction. Then you can switch dogs. Doing some simple training exercises with your older dog while your puppy is distracted with the other person. Giving them both lots of room to engage with you while you're doing this. The slow and steady approach is the best one in a case like this. Happy Training! ~Ken

Several years ago, we introduced a female Cocapoo puppy to our older male Maltese and they got along great but we had to put our male Maltese to sleep recently and within a week, we got a female Maltese puppy and we tried to introduce them slowly but our female Cocapoo runs, hides and growls at her, and won't eat until we start feeding her by hand until she starts eating, in another room! It has been five days now and she is still the same! When we let her out in the fenced in backyard, she won't come back in until we go out and bring her back in! She still loves our cat but won't tolerate our new puppy!

When my older dogs correct my puppy, it freaks me out, i'm afraid they will hurt him. They are never unsupervised. I did the same, I kept the puppy in his crate and separate from them. They are on one side of the fence and him on the other. They now get play time together but until he's bigger and older, they will be kept apart.

Thanks for the great videos! I have one Frenchton and just got a second Frenchton puppy. The puppy gets a lot less upset when she shares a crate with our adult dog but it’s bigger so she’s pottying in the crate. Would you recommend putting her in her own crate even if she gets upset? I could take out the blanket and shorten the crate they are sharing but my adult dog would really be unhappy without something comfy to sleep on. Thank you!!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but what should I do about introducing a puppy to my brothers dog? We see each other every few weeks at my parents place and his dog (though very sweet to humans and my brother is a very responsible owner) has a rough background and has been attacked by other dogs in the past. I am worried his dog (a pitbull - no judgment but can do some damage if provoked) may attack mine if my puppy tries to play or is aggressive in any way

Hi there, Zoe! In this situation I don’t want to generalize a behavior and give you any kind of definitive answer. It wouldn’t be a responsible thing to do. There are a couple of things that you need to be watching for though. Firstly, yes, you do want to give your older dog more time and a little more distance from the puppy. It’s hard to know what sort of energy your puppy had while approaching your older dog. And more importantly, it’s hard to know what kind of “growl” or what kind of signals your older dog was giving to the puppy. Try working with your puppy near enough to your older dog (with some kind of barrier) so that they can watch you engage and work with your puppy. Then try the same with your older dog. It’s really important that you can do this without being interrupted by the other dog crashing in to this “play/work” area that you’re training in. While you’re integrating my the new puppy into your household, just be sure to not rush the introduction, or place either dog in a situation that they aren’t ready for. ~Ken

Hey do you have any videos or tips on how to introduce older (5yo) dogs to other dogs when they’re dog aggressive? How can I get my dog to stop screaming as he walks past other dogs? He will try to bite other dogs if they come close. Once he starts biting he won’t stop until I can pull him away. He doesn’t listen when he’s barking or screaming and if I touch him he will try and bite me. Again he won’t stop biting once he starts. He’s only 9lbs so it’s not too dangerous but it does bruise and break skin and isn’t good for him! He was a rescue and very close to being labelled unadoptable so he’s a challenging case. He’s come a long was but the dog aggression and barking at random noises has to stop! He’s also recently started doing a mix of screaming and barking when he wants to go out. Even if you’re near the door putting your shoes on and he knows you’re about to take him out. I’m not sure why that’s starts!

I recommend a head collar. I have the same problem with my rescue. I just got one myself, and it’s pretty magical. The lead will also tighten around the muzzle, which prevents them from biting. I got one called Gentle Leader. They’re very comfortable for doggo and have an instructional DVD. I feel you. Mine was nice and quiet when I first got him, but now he does same as yours when he wants to go out. It’s super annoying, and frankly, bossy. 😒

Wow this was so helpful! I wish I would have watched this before bring my newest dog home. I think i've done something unique or really crazy? I figured two puppies would automatically love to want to play with each other. I have a 4 mo old Goldendoodle who I had for 3 mos prior to bringing in another puppy. My Goldendoodle, then was the first and only puppy and he is 35 pounds, and he's younger. The Older Dog is only 9.7 pounds. . It gets confusing sometimes as to who is the actual baby because the Malshi is so tiny. I feel bad because my Goldendoodles is so big that I try to keep him off my furniture now, (he is house broken), but when he first came I had him on the furniture because he was so tiny. Now the smaller slightly older dog (the newest one) gets to be in my lap more and on one end of the Couch. So I had to start letting the bigger younger dog get back on the furniture because he was getting jealous and started leaping on the furniture and chasing the smaller slightly older dog all over my expensive sectional. Lol smh. I adopted this 6 mos old Mal-Shi who was from a friend who needed to surrender him. So Thankfully I introduced them outside before bringing the newer dog inside the home, once they got inside they played and then immediately started fighting, (I wish I would have known to bond with the newest one more, he only had about 10-15 mins, because my golden was with me when I went to pick the Malshi up.) They play a lot but they always turn into loud fights. So I always have to separate them into their kennels. Walks together have been really hard but I'm figuring that out tool. LOL.. I really stepped into it with this one. But I love them both and will get it right. Thankfully the newer slightly older dog answers really well to his name and will come when I call him and will seek attention from me.

Hi McCann Dogs! I have 2 stupid questions for you guys... later this year we will be adding an Australian Shepherd puppy to our family! We currently have 2 spayed female Huskies, sisters from the same litter(bad idea...littermate syndrome is apparently a very real thing). They are 3 years old and are actually pretty laid back for their breed in most ways. Nix, my husky, is the easiest. Listens well, loose leash walks like a champ, learns tricks fast(she's learning your Best Buds trick now), and is my shadow because she's on the shy side. Maya, who belongs to my brother, is the opposite. She's outgoing, not afraid of anything, more dominant and pushy but not mean, walks ok on a leash but not great, and is stubborn as a mule with everyone but my brother. They have very mild separation anxiety from one another but usually after a while just sleep. We hike, visit thre large dog park regularly, and have a small fenced in yard they romp around in... though they don't play fetch or anything. Both are higher prey drive. Anything smaller than a Westie and moves, they look at as a toy and get over excited. They've never bitten another dog but they hover and get pushy and obsessive. They love to harass and try to play with my cat. But have never grabbed her. We had a corgi who we lost this year and the house just isn't the same. Add that to the fact we found out Nix has the beginnings of mild hip dysplasia and has light restrictions for activities, and things just aren't the same. Nix's restrictions are in place to keep it from getting bad. So while we can still walk, do small easy hikes, and she can enjoy the park...she's limited on how far/where she can go. So we made the decision to bring another dog into our lives again. We found a great AKC breeder and are on the waiting list! But I have afew concerns and i'm hoping you can help me :) 1.) What's the best way to introduce a younger dog to 2 sisters with a higher prey drive? We plan on the puppy staying in my room for the first 3-4 weeks with limited interaction through a hall gate, until the puppy is larger. But i'm worried a puppy may cause overexcited behavior and they may scare him. (We were told to get a male so not to add more female tension) 2.) What's the best way to keep jealousy down? Nix listens well and is used to her being my main walking partner. And while we plan on the girls still getting their daily walks and park visits, and hikes, it will be a while before the puppy will join us in these things. I don't want the puppy to feel left out either. A friend offered to walk with us and watch the girls at the dog park while im on the other side in the puppy area. (Its set up split for small and large dogs) Add that to the fact im sure the puppy will get most of my attention with training and him staying in my room, i'm sure Nix isn't gonna be happy. I do the main walking with them. The girls are couch potatoes at home, especially when hot....but we walk each night 3-5 miles each, one at a time. And on cool days we used to hike about 6-14 miles. Usually it's just Nix and I on those long ones, because when Maya they get a little over rambunctious and pull a little more. But with Nix's restrictions she will no longer be able to join on those long hikes and id feel awful leaving her home alone. So the puppy is too be my new hiking partner for long runs, while Maya keeps her sister company. And when we do local short hikes, the girls will join myself and a friend like always. Im just not sure what the best way to introduce the puppy to them is, and how to ensure things go smoothly so they can live together nicely. Our other dog could have cared less when we brought the girls home at 9 weeks old. These 2, however, are nebby and persistant, and are annoying with small things. And while the girls get along great, i'm not sure how a puppy will shift their worlds. If you tell the girls leave it, normally Nix will just look at it or ignore it, while Maya feels the need to look at the object of her attention and get excited or hover it. But with the cat if we say leave it, she sits close and stares with her tail going crazy and she licks her lips. So Maya will be the hurdle iin that way, while I'm worried about jealousy from Nix. Any advice or videos to check out? We are continuing working with Maya on getting her focus..but unless it's my brother she could care less Haha.

Hi there! This video is perfect for your scenario. There isn’t an amount of time that you need to wait to introduce your older two, to the puppy. You want to be sure that your puppy has a reliable recall, listens well and understands that they need to respond when you ask them to before giving them an opportunity to be off-leash together. First introductions can be made with the lowest energy older dog first. It wouldn’t be fair to the older dogs if the puppy came flying in, harassing them with puppy play if they weren’t ready for it. And it wouldn’t be fair to the puppy if he got squashed by an overexcited older dog! The first little while with the puppy will be time consuming. Make sure you’re spending equal amounts of time with the dogs. The great part is that puppies love napping, so when he falls asleep, you can spend some time with the older dogs. If you’re worried about the older dogs stalking the puppy, or being too rough when they are finally introduced, have them drag a leash, so you can stop any excessive situations where someone could get hurt. We have TONS of puppy videos on the channel that you’ll enjoy. I’ll try to post a playlist in the comment below this one. Thanks for watching. Have fun with your new puppy! ~Ken

My 4-year-old dog started growling once I introduced him to my puppy so I had to quickly separate them. What should I do?
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, quantised! I'm glad you separated your dogs for the time being. You could try a little more open area to introduce your dogs to lessen the likelihood of that kind of response. Maybe you can get a friend or a family member to help you take both dogs for a short walk outside, where each of you takes a dog. You shouldn't force any interaction at this point. WHat's really important is that you teach your puppy to listen to you, long before you try to create any relationship with your 4-year-old dog. By taking some of the pressure off of the situation, and spending some time teaching your puppy to always listen to you first, you are more likely to have a good experience when introducing them. Great video! Though my problem is that my dog is quite jealous - we were dogsitting a 9 week old puppy for three days and it was a lot of work, since my dog quickly started to snarl/snap at the puppy. Is there a good way to train out the jealousy? (It started to get better towards the end, we tried our best to avoid the situations where my dog felt the need to act out) Sadly I don't have dogs that I could borrow for trainings-sessions here, but I do want a puppy at some point (my dog was already three when I got him so I never got to experience training a dog from the start) and I want to know if it'll be always an issue. He is really friendly with most dogs we meet outside, but he doesn't want any other dog close to me inside. (he also shows food aggression with other dogs while I can take his food/treats away) He is a Corgi and definitely got his fair share of Corgi specific traits. He is a mama's boy, does more or less everything for food, is bossy/thinks he is one of the big dogs, stubborn and so forth.

Hello. I'm assuming I may not get a respond seeing this was posted in 2016. But I figured I would give it a try anyway. I have a 1 1/2 year old pitbull. We recently got a 6 week old pitbull. Both are female. I can tell the older one is unsure of the smaller one and seems tense around her. On top of that, if I hold the puppy the older dog jumps on me to sniff her. I tried putting the puppy down, but the older one does not seem fine with that. What can I do to help ease my older dog tension? They currently sleep apart and will not interact unless I am present.

Hi there, Maria! All of the steps mentioned in this video apply to your situation. You can create a lot of stress for both the older dog and your puppy if you try to force the introduction. The puppy should have her own space that she can rest, relax and maybe even chew on her own toy in. Same thing for the older dog. I would have baby gates or another physical divider available right now until everyone relaxes into their position. You can have a leash on the older dog and a house-line on the puppy when you feel like they aren't so stressed about meeting each other. You need to tell your older dog "off" when she jumps up to invade the puppy's space when you're holding her. In most cases, the puppy can remove herself from a situation when she feels uncomfortable. If you're holding her, she doesn't have that option anymore, and it can be a worrisome experience if she isn't comfortable with your older dog yet. Having them be able to see, smell and hear each other without feeling obligated to be nose to nose, or nose to tail sometimes is a good way to start the introduction. This is where a baby gate or other divider comes in handy. Spending individual time with each dog is also important, not unlike children. Kayl talks about this in the video, and it will be helpful for you as well. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching! ~Ken

@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 7 жыл бұрын
+Angie Wirthlin That is just a piece of nylon rope that we attach a clip to, so it's easy to get on and off. We have miles of the stuff because we give our students these light lines to train with when they want to increase distance from their dog. Another great alternative, is to get an inexpensive leash from a local dollar store and cut the handle off of the leash to use it as a line.

Any advice for introducing two younger dogs in a house with a size difference? One is a pit/catahoula (60lbs) & one is 10lbs shih tzu/bichon. I’m nervous to bring the two together because my catahoula has so much energy 😭
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Priscake C! Yes, make sure to follow these same rules when introducing the two dogs. Be sure to have your Pit/Catahoula on a leash so you can stop any unwanted behavior. It's a good idea to have your Shih Tzu on a leash or house line as well. Whether the play is too rough, or whatever the reason, it's important to have control of the situation. I would start by taking the two for a walk, with two separate people, so you can give them each some space if they need it. After a couple of repetitions in this setting, they will be less likely to be as curious about each other. They will still investigate occasionally, but you'll have your leashes on to interrupt anything you don't like or don't want. Hope this helps! ~Ken

Please help! Yesterday rescued a puppy and brought him home with my 3 adult poms. Like you said, I keep them separated, two poms are curious but don't bother him, the youngest one barks all the time and tried to bite him. The puppy is in my room at night cause he cries, during the day he's with my sister's cats, they get along. I'm not sure if I can take the puppy for a walk, he's very small. I'll follow your video and work with my dogs so they can live happily.

Hi there, Alexia! The tips on our channel will definitely be helpful. Taking your puppy for a walk will depend on his age and energy level. If he's really young, he won't need a very long walk. In fact, you will be able to burn off lots of energy just playing games, and teaching him tricks. If he's old enough, you'll even be able to start teaching him to walk on a loose leash! Here is a link to a video we created that will show you how to teach small dogs to walk without pulling: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZqZh4uwfdN0jJo Thanks for watching, Happy Training! ~Ken

I have a 10 year old Maltipoo who now lives with my parents and he’s so spoiled by them and literally gets all the attention, he doesn’t like other dogs or more so afraid of them, especially bigger ones. My husband and I are planning on getting a Boston terrier but I’m so anxious about how my maltipoo will react to him. I don’t want either to hurt each other so this really worries me. Would you recommend me still getting a second dog or maybe not bother?. Also is it true that pairing a female dog with a male dog is a lot better for them to get along?

Hey there, Shaneeda! Actually food training is the most effective start for any puppy. If you’re finding that you’re having trouble getting away from food luring, then you’re likely using poor timing with your rewards. Make sure you leave a second between when you issue your command and you present food to your dog. You will quickly become dependent on the food if you present food too quickly. Without some effort from your dog! The real challenge with Border Collies is that they can learn your bad habits as well as your intended methods. McCann Dogs has helped over 80,000 dogs to be well behaved family members (the largest dog training school in the world) using food as the initial resource to guide dogs through their training. This is the best method for most dogs (when done correctly), but as you mentioned, using your voice to support your dog with praise is a very powerful way to maintain attention and build drive! I’ll post a link to a video below about fading the lure so you can better understand how you can fade the food lure to be successful with your dog! Thanks for watching! ~Ken

I rescued 2 7 week old female puppies from horrible living conditions. one of them could barely stand. I have a 4 year old male neutered mini Australian shepherd. It's been 2 weeks and he is still growling, sometimes snap and then move away. I am always there when the puppies are near my older dog. I am hoping so much he will accept them. We did keep them separated the first 3 days so the puppies could get used to us. It's so hard with 2 new puppies but they would have died if hadn't taken them. Any tips you could give would be so helpful. Thank you so much for your video!!

Keeping them separated will be important until he is more comfortable with the puppies. You need to make sure you don’t force any of the dogs into a situation where they feel compelled to act out. Give all of the dogs more time to adjust at this point. ~Ken

Currently, my 3 girls have all developed great bonds with me and with each other. However, one of them is getting ready to have puppies, of which I plan to keep one. How do I make the bond with me greater than the bond with her mother, who will still be with me and showing with me.
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 7 жыл бұрын
Great question Karen! We have encountered that exact situation. After the puppy has weaned off of the mother (generally around 8 weeks) you can separate them as often as possible, until you have established that great relationship between you and your new puppy! That means separate training time, separate social time, and lots of 1 on 1 relationship building time. Whether that is training, or simple exercises, you can have the mother somewhere that isn't a distraction for the puppy. Can't wait to hear about your new puppy! Have you watched our puppy series with a little of Border Collie puppies we recently had? It was a wonderful experience, and we were able to capture their growth over 8 weeks!

I love the concept of this. The concern that I have is that I have a very jealous 7.5 year old velcro Golden Retriever. My concern is that if I “lock away” my older dog, she will resent the little intruder even more that she already will. I desperately want to create that bond with the new puppy I will be getting in September just as I have with my heart dog, Káva and I want the two of them to bond ..... so how does one deal with jealousy? When I got Káva, I was working from home and she was the only dog so the bond happened naturally, now I will be introducing s new member to the family and I work outside the house. I plan to take vacation time if I can’t convince my boss to allow me to telework for a while but that does not negate the issue of bonding.

McCann Dog Training thanks Jon. Alas, my older dog was crate trained and then something happened and she developed a terror of the crate. I have been trying to work on it but she won’t even go in the room when the crate is in there with an open door. She starts panting, and shaking, and shivering. I wish I had videos in my house so I knew what had scared her so but that is the situation that we are in. The puppy will be crate trained but I don’t think that the old dog will come around in time. I am hoping that gates will suffice.

Hi there, Kristina! Dog training is an ever-evolving process for most. We prefer using the least intrusive minimally aversive methods as we have found them to be the most effective on the largest amount of dogs. We have trained more than 90,000 dogs and their owners to have the strongest relationship possible. What results is dogs who listen, because they want to listen. And owners who enjoy the act of training their four-legged family members! The tips in this video have proven to be effective time and time again across all breeds and temperaments. Through evidence-based methods, I am sure you'll see the benefit of this information. Happy Training! ~Ken
