I found this series because in about to get a dog and wanted a good effective way to train my new puppy. I see there's a vid on crate training, and introducing the puppy to the house. I'm curious how you'd go about the intro and crate training when you 1st bring them home and you have yet to teach then any markers. Would you just use pressure and lead training to get them used to the new place then start training your markers? Or would you train them your markers, then introduce them to the house?

Hey! First of all, what really great videos! This is going to be very helpful so thank you very much! We are going to get our puppy (sheltie) in a few weeks but we need to make a 5h drive with them. So we were wondering, do you suggest holding the puppy on our lap or in a crate in the car? Or what is the best way to transport a puppy, that doesn't know us yet? Also, how many times would you stop on the way to let the puppy out of the car for a while? Because 5h is long.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
I always like to travel with dogs in their crates or with a harness on buckled into the seatbelt. You can hold the puppy if you like, just be sure to be safe on the road. Getting into a car accident with a loose dog or puppy can be very dangerous for the dog and the humans. More likely than not, the puppy will sleep most of the time. If the puppy starts whining, then pull over and give the puppy a potty break. I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel. :)

Hi, should you keep a leash on a new puppy in the house all the time? Does it hurt their neck?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
As long as they are being supervised, then it's okay to leave the leash on in the beginning for training. I would suggest using a tab. It's a short leash that's less likely to get caught on furniture. You can order one, but i prefer to just buy a cat leash and then cut it to the length that I want.

Question: should we get up periodically throughout the night to let the puppy out, or should we keep her crated all night? We're picking up a 12 week old German Shepherd/Catahoula Cur mix on Thursday and we've already learned a lot from finding and watching your videos today. I realize I did a lot of stuff wrong in the past with dogs, and I'm determined to do it right with this one. Great job but this was done with a puppy that already had some understanding of markers and leash pressure. Majority of new puppies being first time on leash and in new environment, wouldn't act like this, it would have been nice to see puppy coming in for first time and first time with leash on since this puppy didn't show any signs of being nervous or anxious with leash on or new environment..
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and yes, you're correct. I did a little bit of work with the puppy before bringing him into the house. In addition, the breeder helped with the initial imprinting to make the process as smooth as possible. When done correctly, the leash pressure is very easy to teach. One can bring the puppy home, do some basic communication training in the yard and then introduce the puppy to the house. :)

Hi Nate, hope you are well. We may be adopting a 4 yr old dog from a shelter who has only ever lived in the shelter. Should we train him as if he is a puppy like the above video?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I follow the same step-by-step scientific proven process with every dog that I train. 1) Teach the markers (engagement training) 2) Teach luring 3) Teach leash pressure 4) Add the verbal command 5) Teach the stay with leash pressure 6) add corrections (If desired) for reliability In regard to the science part, keep in mind that when you are training your dog the science is always the same; what varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc. Being able to adjust for each dog’s specific needs is considered the art of dog training. Because of this, not all techniques work on all dogs; and as a result, you have to be able to adjust accordingly. For example; a dog with a very high level of perseverance will continue to work through a difficult task to get a reward-while other dogs may give up early.

I plan to train a puppy to eventually be a service dog for my 5 year old daughter who is a full time wheelchair user. Because my daughter is so young, is it ok to first have the crate in my room (so I can take the puppy out at night and calm her while not disturbing my daughter’s sleep) and then move the crate to my daughter’s room once the dog can hold its bladder through the night? Does moving the location of the crate create any kind of confusion for the dog?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's how I would do it. The one adjustment I would make; If you have to crate your puppy during the day, my suggestion would be to crate the pup in your daughter's room. This way the adjustment will be much easier. I hope this helps! Cheers!

Thank you so much for your videos! I shared it with all my dog owning friends. I noticed you didn’t use a correction “no” when the puppy was doing something you didn’t want. When I introduce my puppy should I just apply pressure and not use a correction since he will not be familiar with the markers yet?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can use the marker. I would start with a marker that predicts leash pressure, just like how I teach the stay command. :) Later after the dog knows all the rules of the house, then the marker can predict a correction if needed. :)

I was so excited to do this with my puppy that I brought home two weeks ago, but he is completely hyper all the time, biting and playing with the leash and is so quick to pick things up or jump up and drag things down that it's so far from this training video with wonderfully calm Derby... I have ended up so far from the training methods yelling no all the time and exhausting myself. :( I wish you could do some of the training videos with a 3-4 month old hyper puppy so I would know how to cope with the everyday stuff. Two weeks would help get your dog comfortable in the new environment. However, You would still want to leave randomly throughout the day, so the dog doesn't get comfortable with you being there 24/7, which could cause separation anxiety when you go back to work.

Hey Nate! Love your videos, man. Really insightful, especially since I'm preparing for my new vizsla puppy next week. One question for you, though: What are your thoughts of using play pens in coordination with crate training? I'm asking because while I'm working from home, I obviously can't be with my pup 24/7, but was thinking of using a play pen with her crate.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Just keep in mind that crate training is house and potty training. If a puppy is fine in a small space and there are no issues, then it's fine. If you have the puppy in the playpen and he chews the carpet and goes potty in the playpen, then he may not be ready yet for that type of freedom. You have to adjust according to your dog's progression. I hope that helps!

I have watched way to many videos in one weekend and can't keep them straight, But in one video I thought you said it's better to give the terminal command in the first parts of training. I would assume introducing them to your house is one of those and that he has some training and that's why you are using him for your video. Toni, my female shephard (4 weeks old, her mom is a former service dog), already shows her will to explore when I visit her. Second question? What is the best way to get her to bond to me. Some say put her on her back (her mom doesn't like this) some to breath in her face. Some to make sure she smells you. I get limited visits so want to make the best of it. I have already scheduled visits to farms around me when I bring her home as you advised in your video, since I don't have animals right now being gone for work for the last 2.5 yers, but usually do.

@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's normal. You can use the leash pressure, like demonstrated in this video. You can also pop the leash, giving the pup a correction when the pup picks up an of the questionable items. The motivation to prevent the correction, must override the motivation to eat the grass, branches, and rocks.

It will help make it clear to your pup what the rules are. For example, if you want the pup to not go into certain areas or if you want him to potty is one specific spot. :) You can also use a tab. A tab is a 6 inch to 12 inch leash. It helps prevent the leash from getting caught on things. I hope that helps and thanks for supporting my channel. Cheers!

@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Raul. Yes, it could affect the puppy, but it's not guaranteed. It depends a lot on the dogs genetics. If the older dog was growling at the puppy and the puppy wasn't backing off, then its possible for a dog to escalate it to a bite. I would keep an eye on them when they are together, so I can be sure the puppy isn't being too invasive towards the older dog.

@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
If you want to potty train and house train your puppy, then yes I would get a crate. When I am potty training a puppy, the crate is just big enough for them to stand up, turn around, and lay down. As the dog grows, I get them a larger crate. The size only matters when the dog is still potty training. Once the dog is fully potty trained then you can have as large of a crate as you would like. This helps prevent the dog from going potty on one end of the crate and sleeping on the other end. Having the crate smaller teaches the puppy to hold their bladder. I hope this helps! 🙏😁🐶🐕

Hi Nate, 3 weeks until our new GSD is home at 8 weeks. I've seen/read that we shouldnt be incorporating leash pressure until a few months in. Would we just do the same on a harness if this is the case?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt! Thanks for reaching out and for the question. I'm sure you must be very excited to be getting your puppy soon! I've used leash pressure on dozens of puppies and never had any issues, but maybe we need to change the name of the technique to "leash cue" because that's really what it is. It's a physical cue to get the dog to perform a specific behavior. I love to use a harness for drive building, confidence building, increasing frustration for specific behaviors, as well as exercising. All of these require the dog to pull, that's why we use a harness for those activities. Check out the video on teaching leash pressure. The process in the video makes it very easy for the puppy to learn. I hope this helps and thanks again! kzbin.info/www/bejne/b32bpX5torh3Z5I

What’s the best way to introduce new puppy to our pack ages 8 and 2 1/2?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
If you're bringing home a puppy and your other dog is good with dogs, then it should be a simple process. Just bring the puppy home and let your older dog see you holding the puppy. Most dogs will not be aggressive to a puppy because a puppy is not a threat. However, some dogs will correct puppies for getting into their space or not respecting boundaries. Often this isn't an issue, but it can start to teach your dog to be submissive. Since I don't like my dogs to be submissive, I don't allow my older dogs to correct puppies when I bring them home. If I notice that the puppy is bothering the older dog, then I'll move the puppy away from the other dog. It also helps to introduce them in a neutral environment, such as the front yard. However, I follow a different process if I am bringing an adult dog home. First, I want to make sure that I can walk both dogs on a loose leash. Once I can do that, then I walk both dogs together. One dog on my left and one dog on my right. You can also have a person help with this process. Just be sure a person is between both dogs. While I'm walking the dogs, I'm making sure the dogs are not showing any aggressive behaviors. Most of the time, non-aggressive dogs will just walk as if it's a normal walk. They will show interest in the other dog, but nothing to raise any flags. Once I get back to the house, I walk both dogs into the backyard or in the house if no yard is available. By walking around the neighborhood with both dogs it seems to welcome the new dog into the group. Once in the yard I drop the leashes and let the dogs interact. For peace of mind, you can have the water hose ready if the dogs decide that they don't like each other. Spraying dogs with the hose is a safe way to stop most dog fights. This is usually not necessary if you did the walk correctly and watched for signs of aggression.
