I am recently retired at 60 years old and I am 100 pct invested in U.S stocks. My situation is somewhat unique because I have 0 debt and 5 years of living expenses in cash. I (personally) have a very high -risk tolerance and didn't lose any sleep when the market went down 35 % in March. Your losses are bigger AND your gains are bigger in the stock market, but,...if you believe that over time it will go up you will always be better off in stocks. My mother is the complete opposite and thinks getting 1% in a CD is a great deal. And I will be getting $2000 a month from S.S in 2 years which will cover my bills,...so I am very confident in my asset allocation. Btw,....my total stock market return over the last 10 years was 10.8 %.

I wanna just say this about bonds - I invest in mutual funds in my seventh world country because that's the best option, we have no etfs or index funds here, and, every quarter of the year I transfer 0.75% from the stocks into the bonds. Why? Right now I don't need the money from my investments, but I wanna be sure I have a pot that is stable to pull money from. That's the role of bonds in my portfolio. And yes, i transfer 0.75% quarterly to add up to 3% annually since the mutual funds charge me around 2% in fees. Their 2% and my 3% for me it's the 5% rule. I am using it ahead of time as if I am retired right now, to avoid volatility in case I need big chunk of my money. And I still invest every month into the stock funds.Great explanation why you don't hold bonds, makes sense.

If I had to guess, another reason for their stance is that they still have multiple streams of income as well. As they aren't purely drawing from their investments (and, seeing their other videos, it looks more like they're still BUILDING wealth), they can afford a higher risk/higher reward profile. I really love this channel and their openness and blunt honesty about so much of their own investing and where the traps are. Thanks, guys!

Great video, I’m glad you did one to cover bonds. You did fail to touch on the fact that the value of your bonds can decrease as well, particularly if interest rates go up. In the 1980’s I would have owned some bonds, but not in the last 20 years, they pay close to nothing and interest rates can’t go any lower so the bond values will not appreciate. I agree on your 100% stock allocation, that’s were I am at as well. You can find stability in equities through extreme diversification US plus some international stocks and you can over weight you portfolio with less volatile sectors of the market like utilities, consumer staples, low beta stocks, dividend aristocrats for improved stability without compromising total returns.

@OurRichJourney
@OurRichJourney 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Antonio! I think you're referring to the Vanguard allocation video, which shows a 70% stock, 20% bond, 10% cash allocation. It’s actually always been the same. When you invest in Vanguard, they show your investment portfolio as an allocation between “stocks” and “bonds.” The “bonds” identified by Vanguard also include CDs. If you take a look at the video, we identify all of the holdings in our “bond” category, which is all of our CDs (which are composed of a CD ladder). In the video, we referred to our allocation as a stock/bond allocation, but we did that simply because that’s how our Vanguard allocation (that we show in the video) differentiates the stocks and bonds (i.e., CDs) and we didn’t confuse anyone. Hope that makes sense!

You are VERY VERY wise to even be looking into these types investments so EARLY:) Congrats ( i wish i was that aware of investments at that AGE) just a FYI, if you have a PROFIT sharing investment at work, try and max out the minimum matching by your company FIRST, secondly save what the IRS allows you too in each plan, whether taxed or pre taxed. Taxed you ACTUALLY dont owe taxes later and a few other benefits but your money grows a little slower as it is not cushioned by owing taxes later. If you can set up a profit sharing account, a 401, or 402 K and a IRA (this can be Fidelity or Vanguard.my opinion) The IRA PRIVATE (not by your employer (yes no matching funds) and just save about 14 dollars a day in the IRA, this will return on AVERAGE by age 60 $1,000,000.00 PLUS and can reach two million dollars if you invest in mostly or all stocks or a mix of 75% stocks and 25% bonds. You will SURELY be a multi millionaire if you save at least 26,000 or MORE (this is most important for the multi millionaire part) This is a lot for younger people, but if you can resist the fancy cars (buy a toyota corolla.they last over a million miles EASILY, get the HYBRID 0% currently and about 17,800 LOADED ..58 MPG etc) when you sacrifice early the PAYOUT is HUGE! I make the mistake of buying close to half a million dollars in vehicles and that ALONE reduced my total today:( Thats why i have been saving half my paycheck NOW, which is gigantic and my portfolio scares me in a GREAT way!............................... BASICALLY the FOUNTAIN of YOUTH is this in the USA......HEALTH, CASH, CREDIT, INVESTMENTS..............the first million dollars is the HARDEST to SAVE..after that for me its the TIME to save another MILLION dollars! I wish you the best while YOUTH is on your SIDE!

It certainly helps to have a large one to two year "emergency fund" or some kind of near-cash fund to draw from during stock market crashes. I recall you guys use laddered CDs for this purpose. People watching your video should keep that rsik averse aspect of your plan in mind. IMO, either people should replicate your strategy if they can find decent CD rates. Otherwise I think it is entirely fine to invest in treasury bonds as a replacement to CDs. I've happily replicated part of your plan by setting up a 3 month cash reserve, a laddered CDs, as well as an all weather portfolio (replacing gold/commodities with utilities/reits) to fund approximately 9 months of expenses. The all weather fund will hopefully keep up with inflation plus a bit of extra interest and take the place of CDs that used to pay 4% or higher. Everything else goes into a 100% stock portfolio of VTI and VXUS. Thanks for these videos!

I don’t invest in corporate bonds, because they usually don’t pay enough and they’re more risky. The mutual funds and ETFs don’t pay enough interest. Your video was made two years ago and the rates may have gone up since then. Due to the squirreliness of the stock market, instead of keeping my money in an online savings account, I am parking money in T-bills, with a ladder of 17 week T-bills, which are currently paying 4.7%. One advantage of T-bills, is you don’t pay state or local tax on them, if your state and city taxes your income. Another area I’m starting to invest in again, is municipal bonds, because they’re paying over 4% again. Municipals are federal, state, and local tax free. Food for thought: I heard that BBB municipal bonds are safer than A-rated corporate bonds.

@LilaXp - Thanks for the question! It's actually always been the same.

I am 55 years Young and have a least 10 more years on my time horizon God willing. I consider my investment style tolerance on the aggressive side so I'm gonna go with 80% index funds, 5% bonds and 5% gold investments with a few individual stock purchases. I'm feeling confident that is a good plan of action for me. A few adjustments way down the line as market conditions may dictate

Bonds work as hedge to stocks which is riskier investment. So when you see the Vanguard study, if the stock ratio gets higher, the worst year's loss gets bigger. It means that bonds can cover the loss of the stock cause bonds usually move oppose to stocks. So if you're more about making bigger money with your investment, the ratio should be much higher in the stocks and remember that more risk can make you more money. But if you're more about safe investment and hate loss, put some more to the bonds! (This is how I understand what bonds are. If it's wrong, please correct me! I'll be glad!)

Appreciate all you both do. I assume one or both vested in your Government pensions? I am blessed to have a job that has a good union pension, very rare these days. So I view the pension as my less risky "bond fund equivalent" and feel quite safe to invest in 90% stocks & 10% REITs in my other Roth IRA and Fidelity accounts. Do you also take this view?

OMG I was literally typing that bond returns are shit until I finished listening to the video and you guys mentioned you dont invest in them. I imagine many FIRE people who have bonds are literally like all surprised pikachu meme when you said you were 100% stocks. Finally, FI people who actually understand that bonds especially in the last couple of years have underperformed so hard and especially if you only buy them just for diversification of your portfolio and because its a "safer" investment at least according to many people just spouting nonsense without actually having researched it themselves. Sure you can have a less volatile portfolio by incorporating bonds but enjoy a significant underperformance of your portfolio over years :P. This video gets a hard like from me for actually informing people about bonds.

My understanding is that bond ETFs are different from buying actual bonds because in addition to the coupon, their price fluctuates, too. If interest rates rise, price decreases.

This video was really helpful!! I’m thinking about opening a second brokerage account to invest more heavily in bonds with the intent to supplement my parents retirement income since they will need my support. But this video also encouraged me to think outside of the box with my current brokerage account, and do more research of course, and take more risk since I’m only in my mid 20s.

First, thank you for all these information. Second, could you please talk more about short-term investments? Like to 1-5 years, for a big purchase for example. What do you recommend? Bonds are a good option? To be honest I don't feel like putting my money in to a HY savings account, I feel like I am losing money. Thanks again for the amazing content.

Hi guys! Question: if you actually (like I do) would like to add bonds into your investment (around 20%), should you place the bonds in a taxable account or a tax deferred account? I've read it makes sense to always have them in the tax deferred accounts as they pay interests, which would then be taxed at your ordinary rate would you had them in your taxable account. Any thoughts?

Bond fund also has price risk - which is not the case in holding individual high quality bonds. You get x% coupon, but also loose x% in price of bond fund. You cannot really hold a bond fund to maturity! What is your thought about it?

It sounds like market timing to us. It's natural for crashes to occur, so we know more will happen. BUT, to predict when they will happen would be impossible.

If you don't have a healthy mix of stock and bonds you end up cashing in on assets when the share prices are down if you need the money. Usually when my stocks are up my bonds aren't doing as well, and vice versa

I never understood the appeal of bonds: in the long run they are actually riskier than stocks since the yield will almost always be lower. Volatility by itself means nothing aslong as you can be reasonably sure you won't lose your money. Which you won't if you invest in index funds/ETF's or very good individual companies and are not stupid enough to sell when they go down. The lower volatility of the bond market is therefore nothing but a psychological sedative that distracts from the basic fact that at the end of the day in almost all cases you'll make more money with stocks than bonds. Bonds do not generally protect against inflation while stocks do. About the only time I'd ever consider buying bonds is if the yield is much higher than stocks. Why would you want to own bonds issued by good companies when you can buy their shares and see your investment appreciate in value over time? Junk bonds are even sillier: if the main reason for buying bonds is safety why forego that safety and invest into something that is actually riskier than (most) stocks? Instead of junk bonds you should be buying either stock ETF's or index funds or individual stocks of high quality, distributing and with a high dividend yield. You'll fare much better that way. If you need safety only buy government bonds (from the major industrialized countries, not from say Jamaica) since instead of being a creditor to corporate America you might as well be part-owner of those corporations. If you need absolute safety cash and cash equivalents are the answer. Why buy bond funds? The yield of bonds is already crap and then you're willing to pay a fee on top of that? Just buy good individual bonds and let them run their course. If you pick the US government as your debtor you will never have to worry about not being paid or losing your principal. I like your idea of having two years worth of savings in cash as well as the notion that if you want to build wealth stocks are the answer hands down. Having that cash cushion will allow you to ride out bear markets with ease.

I absolutely love your videos and they've taught me so much. One issue that I continuously come across is interest rates. As a practicing Muslim, I avoid anything where I earn interest. Of course, this is often the bread and butter of financial growth. I wouldn't feel comfortable investing in bonds, so what are other methods of investing, other than active trading, that I could pursue that wouldn't involve interest? Thank you!

Fantastic.. also invest direct in corporate bonds usually are higher "tickets".. Ford for instance min is 5,000.00 Just a quick info on High Yield Bonds ( I'm Brazilian and that's our Normal / Fixed income in non investment grade country). Brazilian large corporate and Federal Bonds are junk, therefore for me risk model is equal to shares and yields are on average 7%/9% aa. Cheers

Bonds aren’t immune to market fluctuations, and your hard times are more likely to align with when the entire economy is hurting. It would be unfortunate if you needed to use your emergency fund and its value was slashed by 20%+. But if your emergency fund is so large that you could handle a 20% dip, bonds wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for at least a portion of your emergency fund.

I have several years' living expenses in cash, and I recently bought Fidelity® Short-Term Treasury Bond Index Fund (FUMBX) with the proceeds of a CD that matured. This bond fund seems to have a lot better returns than any money market mutual funds or CDs available now and seems to have very low risk (it tracks the Bloomberg Barclays 1-5 Year U.S. Treasury Index).

Hi - As usual great video! I am retire and for my comfort and emotional well being I like to keep several years of expenses in cash. Based on a previous video you did I believe you keep a year or two also in cash. I decided to invest this money in a bond fund so that it makes at least a little interest. Since you state that you do not invest in bonds do you leave your money in a money market account or something else?
