Well for the front, you could jack from the pinch welds and place the jack stands where he placed the jack for the final jack (near pendulum mount)...

@@Convertibenz Depending on your intention for jacking the vehicle, you could place the Jack stands under the lower control arms for the rear wheels. Or there is a cross beam that dips down in the middle where the exhaust splits (at least for Jetta/GLIs, not sure if this exists for GTI).

At the last step, put a wooden block under the left front wheel. This stops the teetering being so bad/dangerous and also allows you to get under with even a regular jack for the last part. Great video!

Why do car manufacturers therefore not just provide 5 or 6x pinch weld supports so you can jack one side and put the stand at the same time as jacking.
@Franko384
@Franko384 2 ай бұрын
Don't know about the other Manufacturers, but VW definitely doesn't want you to fix and service your own vehicle. Their owners manuals are clustered with useless warning labels, that would make a beginner think, he is in serious danger just by opening the hood.

Thanks for this. I picked up a "plastic hockey puck" with a slit to fit around the pinch weld for jacking. I see you just relied on the jack base. Any more risk of damaging the pinch weld that way? Also a tip, if you're using jack stands on asphalt on a hot day, put a slim piece of scrap plywood under the jack stand to distribute the weight, or you risk leaving marks on the hot asphalt.

If the frame rails are still there, those are my preferred jackpoints on the MKIV's and MKV's. This way I can get each side up easily and set the jack stands on the pinch welds. I'm leary of people who put them on the control arms as they are both slippery and then prevent access to replacing the arms. For the rear I just jack the rear off of the center large metal pipe/support thing on my MKV, then place the two stands in place (don't jack on your exhaust, this is some structural member who's name is escaping me right now). It can be concerning to jack on plastic, and it slightly marrs it without protection, however since the 'frame rails" (Yes, I know this is a unibody, bear with me) are key structural supports, I've never had an issue jacking on them. I can't say if this will damage the plastic as one side was already cracked when I got the vehicle, but the other is fine. Using some caution should tell you if the plastic is overstressed or not. Although to be honest, my MKIV was fine for 16 years with no plastic. It doesn't seem entirely needed to myself, however it does keep the underbody a bit cleaner.

When I had my Miata a few decades ago, I bought a floor jack adapter that has a circular base that fits inside the pad on my floor jack and it has two vertical "lips" that fit on both sides of the pinch weld. I could use it anywhere along the weld seam on or off the lift points without damaging the car. It is solid steel and I don't think it is made any more because it was expensive but there are may other similar models out there made of CNC aluminum or rubber. Do a search and you may find something you like. I still use mine all the time on my VW Rabbit. I use it to lift beside the lift point so I can lower the lift point onto the stationary jack.

My way with VWs is to use a bit of wood to put on top of the jack to spread the load, then jack up one side of the car putting the jack slightly behind (to the rear) of the front jack point (but still along the pinch weld). This lifts the side of the car up evenly, so you can put the jack stands on each jack point front and rear. Then, go around to the other side of the car and jack up in the same place (just to the rear of the front jack point) then put the jack stands on the front and rear jack points. Has never failed me and is much safer than this method because the car never teeters around like this

The way I lift my Mk4 (should apply to Mk7 too) was to use long low profile jack (similar to his) and jack up the subframe from the front using a 2ft 2x4 (to distribute weight) remember to block rear wheels place jack stands at front pinch welds, in the rear 2x4 again jack from rear on the rear beam axle and jack stands on rear pinch welds. I know Mk7's have independent rear but there's got to be somewhere sturdy to jack from in the rear...rear sub frame similar to the front? This way I described is safer IMO at least you have car firmly planted with BOTH rears on solid footing when lifting front and jack stands supporting BOTH sides in front when lifting rear of car. Now maybe he did it like the way he did because the car is too low to get jack under car like I described (probably so) if that's the case just jack each corner place wood blocks under each tire to raise car first to get jack under as described above...a little more work but much safer...remember to sweep floor first so jack can roll freely.

Boggles Boggles you really don't have to jack it up that high. when I did mine last weekend I just jacked up the front. Boggles Boggles...If you're worried about the car falling or even if your not, put a wheel w/tire under each side at pinch weld area of car as close to jack stands as possible so just in case it falls you'll not be totally squished. Or anything solid that will prevent car from falling on you, maybe a 4x4 + wheel/tire.

There is such a thing. I bought one for my Miata (can't remember where) which works great. It is circular and small enough in diameter to fit on the lift point of the floor jack and it has a vertical part with "lips" that go on both sides of the pinch weld. Never gave me a problem with hundreds of lifts. If I can find the link, I will place it here. It's kind of pricey but worth it since it is solid steel and very heavy duty.

If you want to preserve your car don't jack or put jack stands on the pinch weld. It's somewhat tolerable to use a four point lift on the pinch weld, the cars weight is spread to four points as opposed to so much of the weight being on just one point. Save the pinch welds!!

The pinch welds are the ONLY jack point on the mk7 (manufacturer approved anyway) they are reinforced in those 4 places. Over twice as thick

The seems will get crushes if you do like that. You'll need adapters. Don't ask me how I know.

Why can't manufacturers make a dedicated easy to know jack points on every car it's not even that hard to make one and doesn't need any R&D other than just pure engineering common sense which I think many in Automotive industry certainly lack off

This makes it impossible to jack up JUST the rear wheels and leave the front wheels on the ground.

Jack at the front point. If you go high enough the rear lifts, put stand under rear sill jack point then.

I always get paranoid when I'm working under a car that's sitting on jack stands😵They just don't feel as safe as the car lift machines in workshops
