Macs have a built in command line MD5 tool. Open terminal and type md5 and then drag and drop your file. Hit enter and it will calculate the hash.

October 14 2024 update you have to boot your console into SAFE MODE to get the PS3 to read the update file on your USB STICK

He forgets to say that you need to rename the HFW_4.91.1_PS3UPDAT.PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP........ rookie mistake by bonesy....
