32 years of experience has taught me to use a few tricks when it comes to repairing plumbing problems. A reciprocating saw and a few metal cutting blades will cut your cast iron pipe and then you can attach your fernco coupling and you are all set to run your plastic pipe. When cutting cast-iron pipe it is best to buy blades that are better in quality as cast is very hard. I prefer Lennox blades with 18 teeth per inch and the gold brand if possible. You can try a set of cast iron cutters, but you are taking the chance of the cast cracking or crushing if it is old. Recipprocating saw works best for me. good luck...Please subscribe and have a great day.

Another way to reduce down in size from 3" to 1/2" is to use a 3" by 1 1/2" fernco reducing coupling and a 11/2' by 1/2" abs reducer.It comes in a 1/2" barbed or 1/2" female end;so it is just a matter of sliding the 11/2" end into the reducing coupling and tightening the clamp.Good luck and I hope that helped.

Hello sgt; These style of couplings are only for drainage lines and will not work an a pressurized water line. The ABS pipe you are talking about is more then likely black poly pipe which is used for wells or underground waterlines. I would imagine the fitting that is corroded is galvanized rather then copper. You can get service fittings (fitting for underground waterlines) that are used on the black pipe you are talking about and also tighten on to copper. Let me know how you get along....Al

@chaotic719playa Hello Patricio;You actually should use 2 ferncos if you are replacing or installing a fitting or changing a piece of pipe underground as you have no movement in any direction for the pipe to move. If you cut out that section, place a fernco on either end, drop your fitting with a piece of pipe glued in either end and then drop it in place and slide your ferncos over the new pipe. Thanks for commenting and have a great day!!! Al

1/2 " to 3" is quite a difference in pipe size.You can use a 3 by 11/2 reducing coupling, then use 11/2 by 11/4. You are going to need a dishwasher connection that will bring you down to 1/2".You will need a piece of pipe between the 2 couplings.One piece of 11/2 pipe for the first coupling and a piece of 11/4 for the second coupling to the dishwasher coupling that has 4 different sizes on it as it reduces down to 1/2 inch.Check at the store to see if it can reduce any easier.I don't think so.GL

A snap torque wrench is good to have, but not really necessary when installing only a few couplings. I would not suggest for any homeowner to purchase one for doing a simple tie in. The big thing is to snug them down well and you should be all set. The T handle torque wrench is very handy when you have a very big project. Hey Al, we found a leaking coupling in the water line going from our well house into our residence. The leak is right at the point where the ABS pipe from the well house connects to a metal (possibly copper) pipe going into the house. The original setup had some sort of connector made of a white plastic screwed into the metal pipe, the other end (which is not threaded) then went inside the ABS Pipe w/ a couple hose clamps around the end of the ABS Pipe. These Ferncos be a good way to repair?

Hello noelmatos7927, If you are connecting 1/2" copper to 1/2" pvc, a sharkbite coupling will do the trick for you! Put a mark on both pieces of pipe 7/8ths from the end. It will show that the fitting has gone on completely. Sometimes there is a half way point where the fitting can bind up so you want to be sure the pipe goes into the fitting the entire way. I'm a DIY'r or try to be and joining plastic to metal has been a bane so your title caught my interest. However, at the risk of being picky, while the coupling creates a connection, the plastic is not joined to the metal.
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 4 жыл бұрын
Hello 65CSX, Using these couplings is one way of joining those two different pipes you mentioned. Unless you would be caulking a joint with oakum into a cast iron hub; butting the pipe ends up to each other and sliding the coupling over both is a way of joining the pipe together. This method has been used for years. You can also use MJ couplings that have a stainless steel band around the entire rubber. A coupling is a short piece of pipe with two socket ends that joins two pieces of pipe together. Regardless of what the pipes are made of the Fernco coupling does that. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! Al

Will a 3” reduce down to a 2 1/4 OD” pipe by chance? Or can a 2” coupler expand to that dimension? This is for a dust collection port for woodworking.
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 Жыл бұрын
Hello TWC6724, A 3" won't squeeze down to a 2 inch pipe, but a 2 inch coupling will clamp down to a 2 inch pipe. Actually it fits a 2" pipe that is plastic,galvanized or castiron quite well as their outside diameter is roughly 2-1/2". So you would be looking for a 2" inch fernco. Another type of clamp is called an MJ coupling. They make them to fir onto copper which has a smaller outside diameter. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the project! Al

Some places allow them to be buried underground. Using an MJ coupling with a stainless steel band is generally what I use underground. I have a 2 story home and have cast iron sewer pipe in between the ceiling from upstairs between floors. I don't know if all the pipe should be removed it is over 50 years old or just repair the leaks ( when we find them). There is not much room to try and reach in between to make repairs. It isn't like a basement where there is room to move around and reach the pipes. I am sure the leak is someplace on the elbow where the pipe turns to go downward to the main floor. What is your advise to do, take the pipe out across the ceiling which will be a mess or patch it on the elbow with the fernco? I am trying to do this as economical as possible. Would there be a chance the older pipe can get worse after it is repaired so what would you do? If we remove it what is the best kind of saw to cause the least mess to cut the cast iron? I appreciate your advise very much, thanks.

+Ruth Ann Friend You could try and patch it with a two part epoxy if you can get it dry enough. This will be a temporary patch, but generally speaking if a piece of cast iron is starting to leak, then all of it is getting thin. I made a video that discusses the different ways to cut it.....Old plumber shows how to cut cast iron pipe. If you are interested. It is hard to say exactly how long a patch job would work on it, but it will get you by for a short time. I would plan on removing it all in the future. @@TheOldkid888 Thanks. My old house's 2-1/2 pipe is galvanized steel pipe. The rotten segment is a p water trap that is cast iron and must be changed. I'm going to replace the damaged segment with 3" ABS p trap with an underneath valve. I saw a 3" to 2.5" fernco on eBay that I ordered if that is the right coupling. If not I'm planning to cut about an inch from one end of 3" to 3" fernco (In a wedge shape manner) and make it 2.5! Hopefully, if that doesn't leak. Also, I see in the UK they have 75mm to 63mm couplings that I guess is the same thing I need.

Hello Sam, So if the galvanized pipe is 2-1/2" on the outside which in plumbing terms would be 2". In your introduction you gave some advice about using quality blades when cutting cast iron. Thanks for making suggestions on brand names. I have about a 2 ft long horizontal cast iron pipe sticking out of my bathroom slab (about 1 foot above ground level) that is about 60 years old and has developed a hairline crack and some rust on the last 1 foot section. I had a rubber hub on the end of that pipe that became disconnected from the plastic sewer line pipe that goes into the ground. The plastic pipe sunk and broke the rubber connector due to soil subsidence. I want to cut off that bad rusted section of the cast pipe, and thought I would wrap the good section of cast pipe in duct tape or monkey tape to help decrease the vibration so I don't destroy the somewhat fragile first foot of somewhat "good" cast pipe. Also, I was thinking of spraying the cast pipe with rust paint and just leaving the monkey tape on it too. I was wondering if there was anything else I might want consider before I start cutting the cast iron.
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 7 жыл бұрын
Hello MrUsaer, Where the cast is getting ripe I always use blades. A grinder with a cutting wheel works as well. Be sure to where a shield of you are planning on using the grinder. You can use a little two part epoxy to seal the pipe until you make your repair. Dry the pipe well and then apply the epoxy. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the repair! Al

Thanks for reminding me about wearing eye protection for this one. Definitely will be lots of rust flake flying! Also, I was going back and forth about using reciprocating saw blades or using a grinder as you suggested.. I need to reduce vibration as much as I can since the entire pipe is fragile. Will decide soon. I am thinking about a second option to fix it by using some kind of product that allows you to tap in a plastic pipe insert inside of the bad cast iron pipe. It would act as a pipe liner so it would probably be thin plastic. Seems like I saw something about that last year online, but did not see it online this time when I looked. Only saw advertisement about big companies that come out and use a machine to insert pipe for your entire sewer line. Would you happen to know about where I could get about a 2 foot long pipe that would fit inside of the bad cast iron pipe? Also, have you ever used it before? IF I used the insert pipe, I would not have to risk cutting that old cast iron and having it fall apart and have nothing left to attach my connecting pipe to. I will use your suggestion about using the 2 part epoxy. That should be better than the gorilla tape that I was thinking about using. Plan on going to HD today just to look around, and should have time to fix it during the week. At least we have 2 bathrooms so no big rush. Again, I appreciate your suggestions. If you know anything about where to buy a short piece of this "insert pipe" please let me know. I am not sure of the proper name for it, so can not even google it properly. Thanks again
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 7 жыл бұрын
Hello MrUsaer , Blades give very little vibration and are much safer than the grinder. Take your time and you will be all set. Is the pipe you are cutting off coming straight down from above or horizontal with a elbow facing downward? Keep in mind that the pipe above is very heavy and should be supported with metal strapping to ensure it doesn't move. You don't want any extra work if you can prevent it. I haven't come across any inserts for pipe, but since you mentioned it I did a little investigating and they do make inserts for pipe, but I am not sure if you can actually purchase any. All I could find was companies who do the work. If you get it dry; the epoxy will work as long as it is made to adhere to metal. Thanks for commenting and let me know how you get along....Al

I would have thought less vibration with grinder, so glad to have your advice. I have cut my share of pipes both ways, but never paid much attention to degree of vibration since I never had to be worried about cutting a rusted pipe before. The 4 inch cast pipe comes out about 2 feet out of the bathroom brick wall (slab actually I guess), so it is horizontal before connecting to the plastic hub clean-out which is about 3 inches below it. I have to cut the end of the cast iron pipe back, not only because it is in terrible shape, but also has to be cut out so that I have enough room to splice in a new connecting pipe between the horizontal pipe and the hub. I bought some different kinds and sizes of pipes at HD but will not know what I will use until I cut away the last foot of the horizontal cast pipe and have enough room to actually be able to try to see what will fit. I have a feeling that whatever I end up doing is not going to be code, but I need a connecting pipe that will be able to flex as the ground sinks a little every year in my neighborhood. It has been about 8 years since I last had to deal with this. I also had same problem finding anyone that sold some kind of insert pipe. Not sure why HD or anyone else online seems to be selling it. Have a lot going on these days, but hoping to find time soon to attempt a fix. Will let you and any others that might have a similar problem how this ends.... or maybe will be back sooner if I hit a dead end of ideas. Again thanks for advice!

Can you use a 1.5" fernco to a lead pipe going into basement floor
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 10 жыл бұрын
Hello Juan; Ferncos can be used on lead pipe as they are very pliable and easily shape to a pipe that is not perfectly round. Something to keep in mind as well; if you apply the fernco and you have a small leak and are concerned about crushing the pipe; you can apply another clamp or two on the Fernco and this may solve your problem. Hopefully one clamp on the lead and the other to the pipe you are attaching to will do the job for you. You have to be careful regardless of what you use on the lead pipe as it can be a little soft and has probably been there for a long period of time. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the project! Al

Old Kid: I have a unique situation. I have a 10' run of cast iron 2-inch which has developed multiple leaks, and which is leaded into the y. I don't have cast iron which I can cut near that y where it is leaded in, and so I'm gonna hafta put the pvc into that leaded connection area. It's either that ( and use a substantial amount of silicone to seal that pvc to cast-iron connection ), or find a rubber coupling which fits the pvc and the other end will clamp around the flange of the cast-iron y. I simply do not have enough 2-inch cast iron of integrity -- when I start sawing on it, I am sure it will fall apart. I am thinking of melting the lead out of that connection, stick the pvc in and seal around it within that cast-iron flange with some heavy construction adhesive / sealant or silicone or whatever. Got any suggestions as to sealant ??
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 10 жыл бұрын
Hello CantPlayLead; I know exactly what you are talking about. I usually cut the Cast Y out and install a PVC or ABS -- Y. I glue 2 short pieces of pipe into the ends of the Y and cut out the section of cast that has the Y in it. I take two ferncos, slide them down the cast and install the section of PVC or ABS with the -- Y in it and I attach the two ferncos. Then I glue the section of pipe into the branch of the Y. If you are going to melt lead and remove the pipe out of the hub; you are going to need a little oakum to pack in the joint and use some Mitee or hydraulic cement to hold it in place. You can use X Seal 3C AF (Asbestos Free) Cold Caulking Compound Cord. This was previously called PC4, but contains no asbestos as PC4 did. It holds the oeakum in place. Whenever using oakum; you want roll it and keep it tight while packing it into the joint. There are caulking compounds such as Plastic Cement that will also help to seal over the joint. You can also add a Fernco for additional security. Take a 3 by 2 Fernco and slide it over the piece of pipe you are installing in the hub. Once you have the pipe sealed in the hub; slide the 3" Fernco end of the Fernco over the hub and tighten the clamps. It will be a little loose, but it will tighten for you. Then tighten the clamp on the 2" end and you will be all set. I use and an extra clamp on the 3" end of the fernco because it is a little loose on the hub, but it will work for you. Thanks for commenting and let me know how you get along! G.L. Al

What's the best way to convert 1/2" or 3/4" metal pipe to PVC pipe? I have a water leak and have to cut both sides of the leak so I can fit another in it's place. Awesome video. Thanks a lot.
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Neil, You would have to go back to the threaded joints on both sides of the leak and unthread the pieces. There is no easy fix for this type of situation. You have to cut the pipe between the fittings and then unthread them. Hopefully they will come out without breaking off. Generally speaking when you get a pinhole or leak in galvanized pipe; it is a tell tale sign that the pipe is getting thin more than likely every where so a complete change out is probably in the not too distant future. To get you back in business; I would suggest two Sharkbite male adaptors. Apply Teflon to them and thread them into the fittings. Then use pex to join the two. Is this in a basement or is the leak outside? Thanks for commenting and get back to me when you get a chance....Al

The gas water heater is in the garage, about 30 feet to the back of the house where the kitchen is. If there is a female PVC threaded fitting, I am going to use PVC from both water pipes from the garage to the house. Under the house I am running PVC to the kitchen pipes, to the bathroom sink and bathtub. I will be using "U-BRACES" to attach the PVC pipe to the beams. I'm not a plumber but, a DIY person.In 2008 I replaced all the hot water pipes, cold water pipes and gas pipes and gas water heater by myself. When the city came out for inspection, he said the plumber did a darn good job. Obviously, I kept my mouth shut. So, if I can do it, anyone can do it.If it wasn't for YOU TUBE, I could've never done it. Thanks to people like you. GOD bless, and thanks for your reply and video's.

Hello Neil, I do know that they make many different fittings and the female adaptor you are looking for is definitely one that's made. They make them reducing as well. The fitting you would be looking for would be a threaded female by socket. You would choose the size. I would choose CPVC over regular PVC if you can find it as I believe it is a better product. Takes hot better as far as breaking down. I am sure some people would argue this point, but this is my thoughts on it. Sounds like you have a good understanding for piping if the inspector gave you the thumbs up! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

Great Vid! My 2" cast iron drain pipe (which runs horizontal under my sink) has just kicked the bucket and broke where the threads are. To attach to my sink is just a 1 1/2" cast iron P-Trap with an IPS Elbow. I can't connect the drain pipe with the Elbow because the threads are busted. Any issues using a Fernco coupling to join the drain pipe with the Elbow? That would allow me to fix the sink today and cheaply rather than to bust open the wall, take out the old pipe to cut and rethread, etc.
@bradgrady7497

Ok. Making sure the elbow's end is round instead of a hex shape, it fits real snug into the flexible coupling (I just went and bought one). The other end I fit as far as it would go onto the broken pipe so as not to tighten the coupling on any weak points. Amazingly, I went to the store, bought the coupling, put it on and tested it and it works - all in about an hour and for less than $5. Thanks for the Vid TheOldkid888 Now I just have to get rid of the moldy smell when all the dirty water leaked out.

Fernco couplings r one of those products that make the installer look like he doesn’t know what he’s doing, wants to take a short cut, or can’t or won’t use the correct fitting. Now while they can b useful for a temporary situation, they r frowned upon because it’s a lazy, cheap way to do it. If fernco couplings were so great, they would b used in a commercial application. Whether it b hospitals, schools and government buildings. And they’re not. If a plumber worth his wrench got caught installing these on a commercial job, he would b laughed at.

Hello Frank, Whenever I come across a situation such as this I install an ABS sleeve adapter over the end of the pvc pipe. It glues on the end of it and increases the outside diameter of the pipe so that it fits firmly into the fernco or MJ coupling.. It is the exact same size as ABS pipe which is almost identical to the size of cast. You will need a transition glue to go from pvc to abs in order to make a guaranteed watertight joint. Hope this helps! Best of luck with the project! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! Al

Thanks. I've seen a couple of your videos and they're most helpful. I've got a question for you that not many consider or know the answer to. What do you do about deflection? I'm replacing the main cleanout with ABS. I've got 4" cast coming in from the street and it's at an angle to the horizontal stack/cleanout. Not much...about 7 degrees as a rough estimate. (I'm really surprised the cast hub just sucks it up, no problem.) Fernco says their couplings will handle 5 degrees max. It was suggested to use two couplings with a small length of pipe between but that's going to mean a lot more digging. I'd like to avoid that. What's your experience been with deflection? Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for any advice you have, Hugh.
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Hugh, Generally I will use a fitting to make an offset, but 7 degrees is slight. I have used them behind tubs where the overflow is not in line with the drainage tee below. The fernco works well for that. I believe one fernco would do the job for you. Something to keep in mind if you have to use two fernco couplings and a piece of pipe you can cut the fernco coupling back a little to shorten the space required. I have cut them back as much as two inches in length where space is an issue. The coupling is the same thickness all the way through so it doesn't make any difference in the length as long as the clamps are on the pipes on both ends. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the project! Al

Thanks so much for the reply. It's good to know I can cut them back if I have to. I kind of agree with you on the 7 degrees but honestly it's probably more so I best use 2 to be safe. BTW, as an old plumber have you ever seen anything packed in the hubs of cast besides oakum and lead? Mine don't seem to have lead. They seem to be strictly a fiberous, thready material. I've been chipping them out with a hammer and chisel and I'm not seeing anything like lead. Any ideas?

Every single one of those couplings you have up there are completely wrong. When making proper pipe joints with cast iron you should be using couplings with a metal shroud on the outside. Either a "MJ" coupling or a "sheer" coupling. Cast iron can shift from side to side and destroy the couplings you have shown.

Hello Rob; I am not sure if \i would say they are wrong. If 2 pieces of cast are hung and supported on both ends; there is no reason why the fernco could not be used.
