I spent a few months going from 3m to 5m, then after a few weeks to 7.5. I could only do a head first dive, and decided to try 10m. I could only do the 10m once during my session (1hr) because hitting the water was pretty strong. After one hour long session (lots of 5 and 7m dives, I have one last attempt at 10m. (This was probably only about my 10th time. I hit the water straight , head first, but pretty hard. I knew there was something wrong because I couldn’t feel it move my arms at all when I was underwater. I eventually got the feeling back after kicking to the surface, but eventually found out that I had damaged both main nerves in my shoulders, permanently, and have now lost my shoulder muscles. And still, about 6 years later, I have no muscle there and have very little shoulder strength, and some problems when I move my arms. So please, as Jim says. Don’t do what I did. I really wanted to go head first from 10m. But I was not given the proper training. I went from zero experience to 10m in a very short time. Always get proper advice before going to 10m. I still find it scary, but I do miss diving. I would not go from 10m again. But maybe 5m. Although that probably isn’t a good idea with my injury.

Why did your shoulder muscle get damaged ? Did you hit the water at the wrong angle ?

Small ones from 3m .. and at my age ..that would be more than enough .. maybe a 5m... but feet first . .. Pretty scary doing it than watching on TV .. never realised it all these years. ..

Awesome videos sir! I broke my neck diving 5 years ago... almost died. Was extremely blessed by god to be able to walk away from it. I broke my C5 vertebrae almost completely in half. It happened in Ukraine 2 days before we had to fly out. Some doctors (both in Ukraine and US) said it required surgery right away, a couple said it should heal just fine as I was healthy and in top shape at 23 years old. I just had to wear a stiff neck brace for 6 months taking only ibuprofen at first .. get this I didn't even miss our flight! (even though the doctors advised I stay at the hospital for several weeks under close super vision) my dad was like no, we are flying out and he will be okay LMAO! I still enjoy diving to this very day :)

I used to get anxiety when I am standing on the edge and about to dive, lots of go-no go things going in the mind at lightening speed and always used to over push and almost fall on my back. Now what I am doing is a run up dive, where I run and take a push and dive. This has removed lots of anxiety since for running I do not have to prepare, and once the body is in motion, all the moves seems to come automatically and I land in the water almost correctly. I would want to dive like him someday but I am happy with my current progress for now. Diving is awesome.

I did it! I finally jumped like this from 5m after a lot of practice from 3m. I used the springboard to fly higher and higher until the visual difference was very small from the next height. I was scared for so long and yesterday the fear suddenly went away (I just now saw it was full moon, maybe that was my werewolf mode? lol) The first time my legs tipped over a little bit but it didn't hurt at all, then did it a couple more times and from there on I can keep perfecting it (the last one was very clean) I also did my first ever 1 1/2 flip from 3m. Looks kinda wonky but hey noone starts out with perfect dives! I didn't do a belly flop, only from 1m haha Edit: some typos

This is why I choose to do the swimmers hands position. With the divers hand position you are entering the water with a flat surface, and beyond certain speed, any flat surface hitting water is like hitting a concrete wall.

The very beginning is what will help me to finally jump in the pool from the starting block! I can sometimes do well with a head-first from the poolside but doing the starting block is still too much. My biggest fear is that I will break my neck because the deep end is only 1.85m. (technically 2m deep pool but they fill it till 1.85m). I know there is an actual starting block and people use them but still, I can't get over the depth in my head.

From my swimming experience, streamline (hands overlapped) probably isnt the best idea for diving, as its designed to make you more aerodynamic and glide faster after a dive. Swimming dives are at inclines and not straight down, and are designed to keep you straight.

I am not a professional. However, I had successfully done a headfirst dive off a 28 meter waterfall in Cairns, Queensland, AU. The water at the bottom was like an infinitely deep hole. Though I succeeded, It was the most freightening dive I ever done. My previous record, I only had done 16 meters, which is actually kind of scary for me, still. Your technique seems somewhat smoother, even though I made it straight in. I had to feel my body as I accelerated upside down.

I learned early to respect the harm you can do to yourself when diving. I once threw my back out during entry from a one Metre board...!!! I also found out you can do a perfect head first from a three Metre board if you stand on the edge, stay stiff and straight and just let yourself fall forward while you raise your arms.

if you take your left hand and make fist, and take right hand and place over left first and squeze the left fist, this feels pretty great from 3m. not sure how it translates further up, but it doesnt bother my wrists at all.

When I was a kid, the local pool had what we called a high dive. I think I was a 3m springboard, but it was a long time ago. Most kids just jumped off. I usually did a somersault and went in feet first. One time, I decided to dive. I'd gone off the 1m a lot as a kid, but I was scared to dive off the high dive. I actually did a decent dive, but I did exactly what this video said not to do... I faced the water. It hurt, although I wasn't injured. The other kids thought I was crazy for going head first.

I have almost no diving experience, but I’m an experienced national level gymnast and trampolinist, and I’ve always been very good with my aerial awareness when it comes to somersaulting. I’m currently in Spain on holiday and have been doing cliff jumping for the week, for the first time ever. I found a 13m cliff which I’ve already jumped feet first twice and was okay with, other than the impact on my feet because I didn’t point them enough on entry. Tomorrow I’m going to attempt either a swan dive or a leap of faith into somersault into the water from that same 13m cliff. I’ve been thinking about it constantly since I first saw it and no matter how scary it is and how much it makes my heart pound to even think about, I just can’t shake the feeling that I’ve got to give it a try. I leave Spain tomorrow, so it’s my last chance here for a long time. Should I just commit and do it? Or stay away and try in the future?
