Thanks for the observation. The rectus inserts into the patella tendon, so your explanation cannot be 100% correct. By externally rotating the femur, you are actually targeting the Psoas. What you may have found out is that a weak Psoas predisposes to patella tendinitis. As I said, that is a great observation.
