I self taught myself how to jump rope like a boxer and speed jump, when I was in elementary school. A new kid came to school and showed off in gym class and it was the coolest thing I ever witnessed. I had to learn how to do it. I practiced everyday for months on end. Within 6 months, I mastered it. In the process, I developed athletic abilities that emerged from the experience. I gained physical skills that endured through puberty and served me well in high school football and track.

I think you can go either way really. When I practice the step I kinda get some of both. The timing is so close between the two it shouldn't good up your rhythm. Good question though! Can't say I've ever thought about that.
