Using dish soaps to wash fruits doesn’t sound right.... especially for berries. Never heard of it when i studied and got my food management certificate...

Plant based or not Why does she add soap? Seems weird to me, isn’t the vinegar cleansing the fruit? Also some people say to use vinegar & baking soda that is natural.

I usually put them in a bow or strainer to clean. l then use the salad spinner to speed up the drying. I've seen some people say not to close the container back tight. But since the original container usually has holes anyway, I don't see the point

You can also use mason jars that you can vacuum seal with a vacuum sealer and they’ll last even longer. You can get the Food Saver vacuum sealer and order the accessary for sealing the lids and at least double the time berries remain fresh.

I am not. I use one or two drops for a gallon or more of water. It rinses out and I use a plant based soap.

You mentioned a thin flat container as an option... what kind do you use? Have a brand new fridge being delivered in a week and I'm anxious to organize it better and keep my produce lasting longer! Berries are our biggest struggle, I end up freezing so many of them for smoothies because they start to turn.

@MOMables
@MOMables 3 ай бұрын
you don't use soap to wash your hands and then rinse it? wash your dishes? two to three drops of soap in a gallon of water isn't going to hurt you or your fruit. it rinses out. Plus, soap is the only product proven to remove waxy coatings and it's slipperyness washes off bacteria (just like washing hands). Of course, you can use whatever method you like... even purchase those fruit washing liquids which are dilluted natural versions of the soap i'm using, usually made with coconut-derived sulfactants .

If you click on the link below the video you'll find more details. Washing berries isn't a science like baking. The spinner holds about a gallon? A cup of vinegar, and a few drops of dish soap.

Why is it when I use this method my berries will mold a day after, where as when I do nothing, let them just sit and wash them as I go they seem to last a lot longer ? Why is it that berries last longer at supermarkets but when we bring them home they right away???
@MOMables
@MOMables 8 жыл бұрын
If they mold quick is because they soaked in water too long and they did not fully air dry. Supermarkets are temperature controlled environments where our homes are not. Their shelf life at a supermarket is 48h max.

Yep! Washing blueberries takes off the natural 'bloom' that protects them so wash when you're going to eat. I don't know that strawberries have bloom, but berries don't like water, and even if you 'dry' them, they aren't dry (are you completely dry when you towel off from a shower? No. Too bad many people will lose more berries than they need to.
