I've heard of a lot of people worried about not staining their wash clothes with make up and the best remedy that I've heard is to use black towels... they still stain, but it's hard to see because they're black. This might work for berries as well... if not black, maybe dark navy? (Personally, I use a roll of paper towels, maybe every couple of years. So I can afford to splurge.) 💖🌞🌵😷

Love your channel! Couple of questions: 1) Does the temperature in your home matter when drying strawberries? 2) Does the jar size or plastic lid matter for strawberries? 3) What temperature should my refrigerator be? For context I used pint size jars with metal lids. I washed them for 2 min. and let them dry 3-4 hours until bone dry but they are not staying fresh more than a few days to a week.
@TheCrossLegacy
@TheCrossLegacy Жыл бұрын
Are you getting alot of condensation in such a small jar? You can remove the lid for a few hours in the fridge to get rid of the condensation. Drying time does depend on climate of your area normally for me here in the Seattle area it is around 3-4hours. Our home is normally right around 70' and the inside of our fridge is set to 36'.
@GabrielleGeorge
@GabrielleGeorge Жыл бұрын
@@TheCrossLegacy thank you. Yes we were getting a lot of condensation in the small jar. I assumed that was the problem so we purchased half gallon jars since that was all our local stores had and they seemed to work better but not as long as I hoped. I plan to purchase the gallon jars you recommend on Amazon since my store is out but I was just curious if the plastic lid or size had anything to do with them lasting longer. My carrots and blueberries did fine in the smaller jars.
@TheCrossLegacy
@TheCrossLegacy Жыл бұрын
@@GabrielleGeorge a half gallon size should work perfectly, I use that size often. For berries it doesn't have to be a metal lid, a plastic lid is ok. You are remembering to set a timer when soaking the berries and only soak for 2 mins, right.

I was wondering after reading a lot of comments… what if I used a canning jar and over the top I put a paper towel then put the ring on- instead of the usual lid and ring. Would that help with condensation? With the bottom paper towel in place as well.
@TheCrossLegacy
@TheCrossLegacy Ай бұрын
Are you having issues with condensation? Are you setting a timer while soaking and letting them air dry all of the way? The paper towel/ring idea might work for a short time but I don't know if it would give the same results if you want the berries to last.

I followed your directions EXACTLY. Is it normal for condensation to form on the edges of the glass jar? I let the strawberries dry for 4-5 hours. I put some paper towels in the bottom of the glass jar and then added the strawberries. Condensation started to form on the sides of the glass jar within a few hours after putting them in the fridge. I know the paper towels will absorb some of this but I'm afraid the excess moisture is going to be a problem.

You can take the lid off for a while in the fridge.
@SusanSabers
@SusanSabers 3 ай бұрын
This helped a little bit. Condensation would still form once I put lid back on but I don't think it's a major problem. I added additional paper towels to cover more of the sides of the jar and will periodically wipe away excess condensation that I can reach w/o emptying the jar. This definitely seems to be helping our strawberries/grapes to last longer. One thing I've noticed is that the strawberries and grapes are staying firmer and not getting soft/mushy on us. The fruit looks just as fabulous as it did the day I bought it. It's definitely worth the little extra effort to get our fruit to last a little longer. Thanks for the tips/videos!

I tried this today and the berries got soggy after :/ I waited about 2-3 hours later and they were mushy and dark red. Never fully dried. Hopefully I figure out what went wrong. Im trying to keep fresh picked Oregon berries. Had the AC going which I thought would help.

Buying organic bananas will allow them to last much longer. Store them on a banana hook and away from any other produce.

Hi. I am happy to help, make sure that you are following the instructions that I teach. 5% distilled white vinegar will kill off mold spores when you use 1/4 cup to 10 cups of water. Only soak for 2 mins and set a timer. Make sure they are bone dry when you put them in a a jar with a paper towel. Did you follow these steps when you tried it?
@sarasayshi

@@TheCrossLegacy I did all the steps only I put them in a long rectangle plastic bin with a lid so they only had 2 rows of strawberries stacked.

@hummingbird275 maybe some people don't really have the money to go out and buy everything necessary to follow the method 100% but they still want to try and make produce last longer so they use what they have. Lets not be judgemental.

What about organic strawberries
@TheCrossLegacy
@TheCrossLegacy Жыл бұрын
Most of the produce I buy is organic and I wash it. Produce comes from farms and multiple people handle it no matter if it is organic or not. Plus this method kills off mold spores.

Does that remove pesticides?
@TheCrossLegacy
@TheCrossLegacy Жыл бұрын
I have a hard time telling anyone or believing that anything removes pesticides completely because they get into the plant, the water it is grown in and grow with the item. Yes it will help remove surface pesticides but not pesticides inside the produce item, no wash will remove what is grown in the plant.

Do you seal the ring tightly on the jar? Yesterday I placed the lid loosely to not get a tight seal as in canning. As I said before, when I tightened the lid , they all popped after opening. I know this is a no no. Thanks love your program.
@TheCrossLegacy
@TheCrossLegacy Жыл бұрын
@Merry Jo Stafford for berries the lids don't need to be tightly sealed. I normally have plastic lids on my gallon size jars which do allow for a little airflow.
